I was admiring my NARS haul that I showed you the other day. In particular, I was admiring the Tzarine eyeshadow duo. It looked so perfect with all the hetchmarks intact and looking pristine and beautiful.
I admired it for all of 10 minutes (to enable me to take the requisite photos) before I dug right into it for swatches and to try it on my eyes.
I guess I don’t have too much sentimental value for new products. On the other hand, there are very pretty palettes that the brands have been churning out in the past year that make it almost impossible to dig into.
A year ago, it was the Clarins face palette, and this year, we have had the Guerlain Cherry Blossom blush, Dior Dentelle Face powder and Dentelle eyeshadow palette, Lancome O my Rose blush and the latest Lancome La Rose Deco blush amongst others. Palettes that are so pretty, you feel awful using them because they don’t look as pretty anymore once used.
For me, I pretty much use my new stuff quite quickly, even the pretty ones, once I have the time to dig into them and enjoy them. Its not hard but sometimes I do have to close my eyes and take a swipe before my resolve falters. For me, makeup can only be truly appreciated when its used, not when its left in its pristine condition.
But if you find it hard to use a pretty palette, I do know of people who buy doubles of palettes with pretty designs. One to use and one to keep. Perhaps in their display cabinet? Hey don’t knock it – we all have our hobbies! 😀 Mine’s bags 😛
What’s your position? How quickly (or slowly) do you dig into your new purchases… if you even do? 😉

Kahani says
I once horrified Syen by walking out of Guardian and immediately ripping into my new lipgloss and applying it. Needless to say, I’ve since converted her to my way of thinking. *snickers*
ParisB says
Teehee so no more petting of new purchases? 😀
Hanny says
Hmmm… I like the Tzarine eyeshadows. ^.^ Sounds so Russian… 😉
Neways, I get to them as fast as I can swatch them or anything before the mother finds out. ^.^ And then I’ll have to hide them… 😀
*Am grateful that she does not read blogs, or I’ll be dead*
ParisB says
Gotta admit I got the eyeshadow partly due to its name 😉 Glad its pretty to use anyway. Aww why do you have to hide the stuff from your mom? Does she not approve?
Hanny says
Yep. ^.^ Not so much la, ahahaha. She’s kinda of an old-school mom.
ParisB says
Ahh.. I know what you mean. Mom was like that too. But now she’s absolutely cool 😀
plue says
oh dear, now u remind me of the brand new things i haven’t dig into >_<
i need to stop procrastinating and start using them!
thanks for the reminder!
ParisB says
Teehee… no more new things till you dig into those you haven’t opened! 😉
Jenn says
I’m guilty of not wanting to break the beautiful surface for my beautiful things, especially those MAC powders with an overspray! I’ll be so heartbroken when its gone! 😛
ParisB says
I know exactly what you mean. Half the joy is in looking at how pretty they are when they are new. And I believe that’s what the companies are banking on – that we’d buy the product for being “so pretty to look at” and we do – suckers 😛
Connie says
my clarins palette face palette is still untouched :p If it’s something that I don’t intend on using because it’s too beautiful, I won’t touch. if I intend on using it then I’ll start using it as soon as I can or after I’ve gotten a few photos. usually i can’t wait
ParisB says
HAHA! Frame it up if you don’t plan to use it! I’m serious. It’ll make an interesting conversation piece 😉
Connie says
how does one frame up a compact? :-/ I’m seriously asking!
ParisB says
They do 3D framing – I would if I had extras and was bored lol!
Connie says
oh, I accidentally touched my MAC Dame Edna highlight powder. now there’s a finger print without the overspray *sighs*
ParisB says
Now you can dig in since its defiled!
Natalie says
I pretty much dig into new things straight away.. but I can’t bring myself to use my Dior lace collection eyeshadow. It is so ugly without that lace imprint 😀
ParisB says
Aww… it isn’t! I’m serious. I use the Pearl Glow now and then and the lace pattern takes forever to wear away. Mine is still pretty much intact. I try not to touch the lace bits 😉
Pink says
the longest i admiring it was my mac msf for nearly a year!!! i do this not only to my makeups collection but also clothes and etc…. i like to admiring it first before actually declare it being invaded ;p
ParisB says
haha… the longest I’d go is probably a week and that is usually because I don’t have the time to experiment. But clothes? Don’t you want to wear them immediately 😀
Tine says
I tore into my NARS Rajasthan the moment it arrived in the mailbox 😛
I used to keep products intact, until my current ones are completed. But now, I can’t be stuffed to wait 😛
ParisB says
Rajasthan is sooo gorgeous! I’m like you. I used to wait but these days I’m like “Yay! New toy!” and use it almost immediately
Esther says
OMG I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN!! o.O I’m a hoarder too! I hoard uh….paper though ^^ and skin care…since I don’t use makeup…. when i enter an arts shop, I scout for textures, weights and colours I don’t have, and buy 4 of each! 2 to use and 2 to take out and see from time to time….
I call it “hobby collecting” XD
ParisB says
Careful about hoarding skincare – it can stink once it expires. And paper is nice if you are the crafty sort 🙂 yes everyone has their hobbies!
Esther says
Oh i don’t hoard skincare! heheh…oh no no no….i don’t like hoarding stuff that can expire XD but YES! I’M A CRAFT-ISH PERSON! ROAR!
ParisB says
Nice! I’m not very crafty myself so its always admirable to see others’ works of art 🙂
gio says
I pretty much use anything straight away but there are a couple of products that still lay untouched. I’ll hav to dig into them soon. I try not too buy products with very pretty patterns or oversprays as it breaks my heart to ruin them, but if I have to, I close my eyes and take a swipe too. lol.
ParisB says
Closing the eyes help doesn’t it? 😉 Some things are so painful to do but you just gotta do it!
Lisa says
I’m happier if it look good on me rather than for how good it looks like in the pan. It’s just like when I buy bags and shoes etc I will not hesitate to use it for fear of dirtying them etc. My philosophy is that things are meant to be made, bought and be used. Hehe..I pretty much dig into new makeup as soon as I can. Usually within the same day I got my hands on them. Else…the next morning. Very impatient.
ParisB says
Hehe… well you did buy the stuff to be used – might as well use it eh? 😉
Tracy says
I’m always waiting & admiring the products, it takes me quite some time to bear digging into them, especially for pretty cosmetics!
ParisB says
Yup! The prettier they are the harder it is to dig right in!
Syen says
Heheheh… you finally dug in, eh?
As Kahani said, I used to pet them a lot longer. But now.. well it depends. Some stuff get ripped open right away. Some get drooled over and petted for a while longer. Hehe. =P
ParisB says
Dug in after taking the photo haha! Been wearing it a lot and I’m very pleased with it!
Jacqueline says
I will use my new makeup stuff the first chance I get. Of course, I resist till I photgraph them in all its pristine glory.
ParisB says
Yep! Pristine products photograph soooo well don’t they? 😀
Jacqueline says
Exactly, at least I can still admire their pristine condition in pictures.
Pink Cotton says
i like to keep my makeup unused for as long as possible so that i can look at them and admire at them in their original packaging and condition 😀 i think i’ve always been like that even with my barbie dolls when i was a kid..hahaha.some kids just rip right into the box the moment they get their hands on it
ParisB says
Aww… but do you end up using them? 😀
shusheshe says
It depends on what it is. Skincare? Immediately. Eyeshadows? If the packaging’s really really pretty, I’d admire it for a few days.
ParisB says
I think pretty things are the hardest to break into. We just don’t want to disturb the look of perfection!
Isabel says
As soon as possible and sometimes, immediately =P
My thinking is that, if I die tomorrow, at least I’ve used my new LOL! Macabre, I know, but that’s me.
ParisB says
LOL!!! That’s a great idea. After all, we bought it for US to use not our beneficiaries 😉
Amanda says
It depends what products 😉 Lip stuffs are usually used the second/same day I get them. Pretty blushes and eyeshadows stay a bit longer in their boxes until I feel like using them.
ParisB says
Ironically, I dawdle over lipsticks because I love how a new lipstick looks. Sick? 😉
Vonvon says
the second last paragraph….ehemm…. describing me, eh?? 😛 Kidding…
I used to take ages before digging into my new makeup purchase…..but nowadays…because of blogging, I have decreased the waiting time…. But I will always wait till I have photographed them in their mint condition first, of course!
ParisB says
Err do you buy multiple of products to keep? 🙂 I try to photograph products in mint condition but sometimes I forget 😛
Jyoan says
haha, for me, it’s really very long. I still have purchases from months and months ago not touched.
