Paris Picks! 7 Sheer Lipsticks to ease you into the wonderful world of wearing lipstick

October 7, 2013 Paris B 60 Comments

I’ve realised that there is always a general “fear” of wearing lipstick. Being afraid that the colour is too heavy, or that it is waxy (not anymore, unless you are using one from the 80’s) or that it is ageing. It doesn’t have to be. With the many different brands and textures available, you can find a lipstick texture to suit you (and your age).

When people ask, I like to tell them to start with a sheer lipstick. It helps ease you into the wonderful world of lipstick, and the colours are usually lighter and easier to wear.

sheer lipstick selection

I’d consider myself a lipstick “veteran” by now, but I still pull out a sheer textured lipstick every now and again. When I have strong eyes on, a sheer lip adds colour without weight and depth. When I want a light, fresh look, a sheer lipstick adds colour without making me look made up. If I want, I can layer on the colour and get more depth which is something harder to do with an opaque lipstick.

In short, every girl needs a sheer lipstick, and here are some favourites that I have. I have segregated them out by brand, not colour 🙂 Do you have a favourite sheer lipstick brand too?

Revlon Lash Potion may help your lashes Grow Luscious but doesn’t hold up to humidity

September 25, 2013 Paris B 34 Comments

If you trawl the pharmacy aka drugstore shelves enough, you may have noticed the party packaging that is the Revlon Lash Potion Volume & Length mascara. Admit it, with the packaging that looks like someone went and did some serious photographic bokeh (not a bad word!) in a nightclub, you might imagine that this would make your lashes look like they are ready to head downtown and par-tay!

The Revlon Lash Potion comes in one shade for now – Blackest Black, which is great. I love black mascara. I don’t see the point of brown mascara (sorry if you like it) nor coloured mascara. Black mascara makes my non-existent lashes look a little more visible.

I also liked the Revlon Grow Luscious mascara. It was one of the better ones that I’d tried, that gave me fluttery lashes. I’m not sure if the lash protecting and lash growth enhancing formula really worked, but it was a good one while it lasted. So, realising that Lash Potion uses the Grow Luscious formula, I was quite interested.

BUT… and there is always a but….

Oh Honey, let’s get Romantic and give a second chance to the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain

July 31, 2013 Paris B 71 Comments

I believe these wildly popular balm stains from Revlon arrived on our shores towards the end of 2012. So wildly popular, they eclipsed the popularity of the Revlon Lip Butters. Now that’s quite a feat don’t you agree? I thought the Lip Butter craze was bad enough!

Yet, I will understand the craze for the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains. They have been touted by many to be the drugstore or low end version of the other wildly popular stick lipbalm – Clinique Chubby Stick. This is where I will disagree wholeheartedly with all comparisons and allegations of dupes. The Revlon and Clinique lipbalm sticks are NOTHING like each other. Nothing. Thinking they are will leave you disappointed.

You see, the Clinique Chubby Stick is a tinted lipbalm (for the record, I don’t like them. They dry out my lips) Expect colour to be sheer and for it to provide your lips with more moisture. The Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains are lipbalm stains. The “Stain” bit is a give away that it will offer more pigment and also last on lips. Chalk and cheese, if you ask me. If there is a “dupe” I would compare these to the Clinique Chubby Stick Intense versions with a caveat that the Clinique ones aren’t as long lasting.

I picked up the Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Honey and Romantic at the peak of the craze. I didn’t like them. I told all my friends so. I found it drying and it didn’t feel right. Then 2 months ago, I rediscovered these in my drawer and thought I’d use them again just to see if my opinion had changed. Much to my surprise, 6 months down the road, I find myself using these almost regularly and I don’t even know how or why it works. Now, it just does! I’m weird 😛

Second time lucky trying the Revlon Colorstay Makeup (Combination-Oily) Foundation in 200 Nude

June 13, 2013 Paris B 34 Comments

revlon colorstay liquid foundation

I really like Revlon for drugstore/pharmacy makeup. They aren’t terribly exciting if I’m to be honest, but they work when they have to and that, for me, is most important. I’ve tried some of their foundations over the years and they generally work for me BUT I’d never tried the iconic Revlon Colorstay Makeup foundation. I know its popular, but I’d try it at the counter and the thick texture doesn’t endear itself to me. Its like everything that I NEVER wanted in a liquid foundation 😛

Recently, I received a bottle and I thought “Oh hey, here we go. My chance to try this iconic product” What I didn’t realise was that Revlon has now come up with 2 different Colorstay Makeup Foundations. The existing one is now meant for those with normal-dry skin and this new one is for combination-oily skin. What this new Combination-Oily texture means is that it feels lighter in texture and also on skin.

I initially didn’t like it. I tried it for a few days and found it drying initially despite the really long lasting coverage. So I set it aside. 2 months later, I picked it up again and for some weird reason, it now works for me. Have I normalised my skin that much from dry to combination? I don’t know but now, it doesn’t feel drying on my skin anymore! I think I just didn’t use as much.
