Shopping

Going on a shopping diet : Here’s 5 ways you can save even as you occasionally splurge

March 7, 2017 Paris B 20 Comments

In my most recent MWS Companion newsletter (find out more about that here) I shared something that I’d been putting into practice for a few months, but didn’t want to talk too much about publicly. In essence, I shared with newsletter readers on the list, that I was cutting back on my spending.

What is gratifying is that quite a few of you wrote back to me to share that you too are doing the same, for various reasons of your own (and we also shared some good ol’ ranting about the current state of affairs globally haha!). Also, I’d noticed this trend amongst some other readers on the blog and on other platforms whenever the subject arises.

For me, I was and always have been quite careful with my spending. I’m actually quite paranoid about saving. When my savings dip below a certain level, I panic LOL! 😀 But those who know me, and who have been with me a while know that I enjoy my luxuries. It all comes with savings, hard work and making allowances (and sacrifices) for things you want.

But in the past few months, I’d actually consciously cut back my spending even further. A large part of it had to do with the fact that I’d been spending quite liberally for the few years prior and when I tracked my spending, I was a little taken aback that I’d spent so much, especially online. I’d also built up a huge arsenal of beauty products (let’s just talk about beauty here eh? 😉 ) Realistically, I wanted to use them and get through them. So, I’ve been curbing the urge to buy new things and shopping in my rather extensive (and expensive!) stash. But do I deprive myself of the odd shopping or spending spree? Ah, that’s what we’re going to talk about here.

You do realise that you can actually still do some decent shopping, without spending as much money as you think you would? It all comes down to spending carefully, wisely and shopping smart. Here are some tips I have for those who want to save, even as the urge to splurge hits and it’s what I put into practice 🙂

French Pharmacy Skincare Finds at the famed Pharmacie City Pharma in Paris

July 15, 2016 Paris B 44 Comments

Bonjour mes amis!

I’m back from Paris, and if you had joined me on my trip on Instagram and Snapchat, I hope you enjoyed it! I was on my own a lot of the time so it was nice having you along! Now, I was in Paris for a beauty related event, but it didn’t stop this beauty buff from keeping her eyes peeled for OTHER beauty brands and products. Oh yes, I have to admit to a roving eye when it comes to beauty!

And we all know that French pharmacy stocks some of the better, affordable beauty products out there don’t we? You don’t? Ah, now you do! My skin takes incredibly well to many French pharmacy brands and formulations of skincare, which is why over the years, I eventually moved away from Asian skincare and American brands. It’s a personal preference and it’s not a recent thing, but been going on a while. I mix it up a little more now, but if I’m trying something new, I usually know that a European or French brand would likely work better for me.

City Pharmacie aka City Pharma at 26 Rue Four, 75006 Paris (Corner of Rue Four and Rue Bonaparte Metro: Saint Germain des Près (Line 4) or Mabillon (Line 10))

There are pharmacies  on almost every corner in Paris. Some are larger and better stocked than others. But almost all carry the major French brands – Vichy, La Roche Posay, Avene, Nuxe, Bioderma, Caudalie etc. Before I went, I did my research and while it was easy to find most of the products and brands I was interested in most pharmacies, the one I kept coming across as a must-visit was City Pharma at Rue Four.

I’m not quite sure if City Pharma (or Citypharma) is a chain, but I came across another in the Tolbiac area (Metro: Tolbiac), when I was there for Vietnamese Pho (oh yes, I ate pho in Paris and it was among the best I’ve ever had! 😀 ) But the one you want to visit is the City Pharma at Rue Four because in this store, the prices can be significantly cheaper than in others! It’s even a bit cheaper than the one in Tolbiac which shares the same name. I’m not sure why this is so, but it’s an open secret because the store was HEAVING with people when I arrived at about 3.30pm. Oh dear!

Sephora Malaysia is Online : Will you be shopping at the Sephora online store?

February 4, 2016 Paris B 54 Comments

If you didn’t already know, Sephora has opened its online store regionally on 1 Feb 2016. This is, I believe in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong for now. The inclusion of Hong Kong surprised me, as Sephora stores had opened, and closed down there many years ago. The Sephora Australia online store launched late last year, to a bit of brou-ha-ha.

You see, what happened was that some time last year, LVMH (parent company of Sephora) bought over online shopping store, Luxola. Most of you would be familiar with Luxola, I’m sure. They are an online store based in Singapore, but which quickly spread its wings regionally and is quite popular. Luxola offered many brands that were hard to find within the region, with very attractive prices and generous discounts. I’d never purchased from them (personal vendetta) but I know many had, and were loyal to the store, and its discounts.

So, when I first learned of LVMH’s acquisition of Luxola, I had an inkling of what was to come. I therefore, wasn’t too surprised when Sephora announced that they were going to have online stores locally. It did make me wonder if, knowing what I know, whether I’d shop at Sephora online. After all, I already do a lot of online shopping.

Will you?

PREVIEW: A Whirlwind tour and guide to Sephora Holiday Collections by price

October 17, 2014 Paris B 49 Comments

Alright, who’s ready for Christmas… or as they say in very PC circles these days, the “Holiday season”? It used to be called Christmas collections not very long ago but it’s now known as Holiday collections. Call it what we want, the end of year makeup and beauty collections are usually one that everyone looks out for because you get some very good value sets and also some very pretty products. Bling! Sparkle! It’s all found in the Chris… I mean Holiday makeup collections 😀

Sephora Makeup Trio Pouches RM92, Ornament Lip Gloss RM16

I was recently given a preview of some of the Holiday Collections that will be carried by various Sephora-exclusive brands and since I know that most of you are also waiting for news of their availability and what to get, I thought I’d give you a quick overview and preview of what will be available from the various makeup brands, and also what I would look out for.

To make it easier for you, I’ve also separated them out into 3 price categories (do note that because I’m in Malaysia, this information is accurate for Sephora Malaysia stores and prices are listed in RM)

  • Below RM100
  • RM100-199
  • RM200 and above

This will, I hope, make it easier for you to decide how to budget for your Sephora purchases come early November 2014 when everything bursts into stores nationwide 😀 So, brace yourself for a very photo-intensive post and please tell me what your picks will be! 😀
