Are you a glutton for beauty punishment?

October 26, 2010 Paris B 24 Comments

i never learn :P

Well as the title says, are you a glutton for beauty punishment?

I ask because 2 weekends ago, I was visiting my sister and realised I’d forgotten my facial wash. I saw the bottle of Hada Labo Tamagohada Foaming Wash in her bathroom and decided to use it. Incidentally she likes it and says it helped her skin recover from a recent breakout.

Anyway I’d told you before that I’d tracked the problem of the dry skin on my hands to this very wash but I figured using it over just 2 days would be alright.

Unfortunately, I’m now paying for my folly.

Just a day after using it, the skin on my hands started drying out and for days thereafter, are peeling like a snake shedding its skin. And my hands feel so dry! I’ve not used anything new since I got home so it had to be that.

I never seem to learn. I knew it had caused me problems before but I still went ahead and used it because its a pretty decent product otherwise.

I am also a little allergic to Shu Uemura eyeshadows – my lids feel weird a couple of hours after wearing them – yet I have a few I can’t give up and which I do wear from time to time, despite the discomfort because the colours are quite irreplaceable.

Just call me a glutton for punishment 😛 Do you have a similar story to share? Have you done anything like this – know that a beauty product might cause an adverse reaction yet you go ahead and use it anyway? Or am I alone in this insanity? 😛

This is like my relationship with Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum/Cream. I keep looking at the sample jar and thinking, it can’t possibly be that bad if I use it again, and then the next day my skin start flaking.

Oh yes, I know… I’m a glutton for beauty punishment as well as food punishment… despite my allergies and all, sometimes I still wanna whack my favorite foods… and use products that I know will break me out in rashes/flaking skin… now I’m paying the price for vanity 2 nights ago… 🙁

So I’m not alone. We just keep pushing our limits don’t we? And then end up paying for it by being miserable with our flaky skin, allergies etc. Sigh…

Mine was Estee Lauder’s Gentle Eye Makeup Remover, which stung my eyes like crazy every time I used it – and I kept using it over and over again! Only because, like Lemon, so sayang to waste it, y’know? :p

I know exactly what you mean. I do that with shampoo and body washes that don’t work very well but I’m “sayang” to leave them so I use them up and then wonder why my skin is dry or my hands start to peel 😛

for me it’s Majolica Majorca lash expander…its’ so hard to remove and the mascara stained a bit for a few days after i washed/removed it! UGH but it’s so wasteful to throw it away after a few use 🙁

Hmm… I have heard a lot of reports about Majolica Majorca’s mascara being hard to remove. Have you tried using cleansing oils and does that help?

hi! most of the cleansing oils i used (DHC, Fancl, Orbis, Shu, Jill Stuart) can’t remove it. I had to use an eye makeup remover, which was fine, but the mascara still couldn’t come off properly 🙁 its so time-consuming to remove it everytime, going through pieces of cotton pads. LOL i made up my mind i wouldn’t purchase it again

There’s this Majolica eye makeup remover thing (can’t remember what the heck its called) that I tried. Its supposed to help remove the stubborn Majolica mascara. I’ll look it up and let you know once I get my head screwed on right LOL!

Thankfully, my skin doesn’t react negatively to any product just yet.
Oh wait, I once wore a TheFaceShop mask before and it caused break-outs. Since then, I stayed faaaar away from TheFaceShop sheet mask..or any other sheet masks..haha..I learned my lesson. I don’t like messing with my skin.

I’m usually more careful with my face. Less so with the rest of my body haha! Sad to know the mask didn’t work for you. I found it alright. It might be the alcohol you reacted to 🙂

Yar I still use most of my foundations that have silicone in it. Yet I know that it clogs my pores and after about a week of continuous usage I tend to have black heads and break outs. Sigh…what to do. Call me a glutton for punishment–go ahead!

Glutton for punishment! *points at Monstro* But I know exactly what you mean. Its a bit of the devil and the deep blue sea right? It doesn’t work, yet you want to use it up so it isn’t wasted… its a vicious cycle.

Hahaha.. interesting… I was surfing the net one day and read all these raves ppl were making about Skin Food’s Peach Sake line… how it minimises their pores, stopped breakouts, etc…. so I decided to buy me a set and try it out… After 1 week or two, a few pimples started to appear on my cheeks… My mom was like saying that this was not right for me la, not good, getting pimples….etc…. I wouldn’t believe her and kept using it cuz it smelled HEAVENLY! Plus I it helped my oily skin and the moisturiser didn’t leave my face sticky… After 2 months, I decided to stop because the pimples were not going away and a skin consultant said that the skin product was causing my breakouts 🙁

sighs… I have a loose powder from Jurlique and it’s AMAZING!! Sadly, it clogs my pores but I still use it sparingly, mayb once or twice a month… haha… I love how silky it is and the smell AND it keeps my skin oil-free~~ lol…

    Glutton? Hahaha… YES!

Ohhh I heard a lot of good things about that line too! It broke you out? eeps! I don’t think I’d try it then 😛 As for the Jurlique powder, at least using it just once or twice a month means it doesn’t break you out then? 😉

exactly! we ALL do. i KNOW that my skin is allergic to green tea, to aloe vera, and basically and surprisingly any so called soothing treatment, you name it. grapeseed oil, tea tree, salicylic acid (aspirin mask). Maybe because i overused all these bfore. yet i NEVER learn! i still buy products with these crap and recently my skin suffered it’s WORST breakout EVER! i looked like a monster.

    recovering now tho. =(

another thing is shampoo. i know my skin cant take moisturizing shampoo, yet i still buy them n break out everywhere my hair touches my face. and u know i have waist length hair, so thats basically everywhere. zzz
