Tip: Apply concealer after foundation and cut makeup time by half

September 14, 2010 Paris B 60 Comments

We all know the mantra:-

  1. Prep Skin
  2. Concealer
  3. Foundation

I’m going to turn it on its head and tell you to try applying your concealer AFTER your foundation. Weird tip?

concealer over foundation?

I used to do the whole concealer before foundation thing and have been doing it for years. But recently, I found that when I apply my concealer and then my foundation, I sometimes have to touch up my concealer because in applying my foundation, whether with brush, sponge or hands, some concealer may get rubbed off.

So, I got irritated and the next time I did my makeup, I put on my foundation first and then touched up with concealer.

Voila!

There was no need for additional touch ups, and I found I was using less concealer because some problem areas may already be sufficiently covered by the foundation!

These days, I apply my concealer after foundation – its faster and more efficient use of my time in the mornings – cuts time by half actually 🙂

The concealers I use regularly for now are:-

  • Undereye: Revlon, L’Oreal or Dior Skinlight concealer pen <- love!
  • Blemishes, pigmentation: Make Up For Ever Full Cover

One caveat: This tip might work better if you use liquid concealers. You can blend it over powder or liquid and it doesn’t get cakey. I love Full Cover for this purpose. It works over and under foundation, covers beautifully and I seriously need to replace mine!

Have you tried this tip? Do you already practice it and am I the last to know? 😉

I’m glad you’ve found that way better. I’ve always used concealer after foundation. Have never tried it the other way round. I want to try MUFE Full Cover but I don’t know what shade to go for. I’m N1 with L’oreal, same as you 🙂 What colour are you using for Full Cover concealer? What’s your HG concealer? I’m still searching for mine!

I’m using Full Cover in #4 which suits my skintone to a T. I swear by this one for blemishes and marks and freckles/pigmentation. For the undereye area, I am presently loving the Dior Skinflash or Revlon Spa Concealer for a drugstore alternative 🙂

That’s what my Shu makeup artist told me, too! LOL. Concealer AFTER foundation 🙂 I was a makeup noob, so she had to teach me. Haha.

I always do this. I thought its common sense? hehee…no offence. 😛

I do the concealer first before foundation when I was in my early 20s. That was when I have serious bouts of acne and the area for concealing is about 20% of my face. The foundation is just to even everything out.

No offence taken! I used to conceal too then foundation but then now it seems that it might be because I was using powder foundation a lot. Now that I use liquid foundation, this way works best 🙂

Hmm, and here I was in the minority thinking that most of us did our concealer after foundation! :p Well, it has always made sense to me to do so because, as a rule of thumb, I always layer something with less water content *over* something that is more fluid or viscous to prevent cakiness. Therefore my mantra is liquid -> cream -> powder. 🙂

I also thought it was always the norm – imagine the wasted concealer if it was the reverse, seeing as every other concealer I like gets discontinued and there’s only so much stocking up I could do 😛

Aww… which concealers do you like? So far (touch wood) the 2 I’m really liking now are permanent 😀

I’ve always done concealer after foundation because most times I don’t even use concealer. So, I only conceal whatever my foundation can’t. Tell you something even weirder, I sometimes apply concealer after powder.. I don’t put a lot of powder so it doesn’t cake and the concealer has better grip.

I apply my concealer after powder now too. But then you have great skin I have no idea what you are concealing 😛
