Shoes

Baby its cold outside… What shoes to wear for cold weather travel?

July 7, 2013 Paris B 42 Comments

shoes in winter travel

I got a very interesting question from reader Irene in her comment on one of my posts about what footwear I’d wear when I travel during colder or winter months, and I need to walk a lot. It was so interesting, I thought it merited a post all of its very own! (See why you should ask questions? You may help someone else and you give me blog ideas! Win! 😀 )

Anyway, I thought I’d quickly share the shoes I wear when I travel, most of which I’ve realised have been with me for quite a while. I walk a lot when I’m on holiday for some strange reason. I don’t walk very much here in Malaysia haha! I’m a lazy bum 😛 But I’ve worked out after quite a lot of trial and error that these are the shoes I feel more comfortable to travel in when its cold. I usually look for certain key traits in my travel footwear, not necessarily brands.

I don’t profess to know it all, of course, since I do come from a tropical country and this isn’t meant for those of you who are planning to travel to the cold outposts of Siberia or even to places that are covered deep in snow or where the weather drops into the negatives. I’ve never done that and I’d imagine you’d need something much hardier. If you do live somewhere which gets cold, I’d love to hear your suggestions. Never a better way to learn than from a local! 🙂

Your Say: Do you have a quick solution for breaking in shoes? How patient are you with a pair of shoes that bite?

shoes bite

I was wondering about this in the past few days, as I pattered about in my flats. I have a newfound love for a good pair of flats by the way. Finding a good one that I love has been pretty much trial and error but knowing that I have them is a great feeling because they go so well with anything! A little casual of course, but hey, if I can get away with it… 😉

So anyway, I have 2 pairs of flats that have a tendency to bite my feet, especially at the heel. I find flats do that a lot. I usually end up with a blister when the shoe rubs my heel raw, and I’ve lost count of the times when I’ve had to hobble around because my shoes are giving me blisters. Serves me right for attempting to walk a lot in new shoes, but sometimes I do that, as a means of breaking them in. No pain, no gain 😛

I figure, if I wear the shoes around a lot, they’d break in more quickly. Sometimes it works, often it doesn’t. Do you have a quick fix for breaking in new shoes, or for shoes that bite?

Your say: Do you know your shoe size? Here’s a tip for picking a fairly consistent shoe size

March 24, 2013 Paris B 36 Comments

do you know your shoe size?

I was thinking about this quite recently, because I wanted to buy a pair of shoes for my sister online, and when I asked for her shoe size, it turned out she did not know it! Its easy when you step into a shoe store and have a rough idea of what size you usually wear, and then keep trying until you hit the jackpot. Its harder with online shopping.

But there are so many pretty shoes online and at very good prices too! Yet, how often do the shoe sizes really match up? I don’t know what sizes the local brands follow but I used to be a Size 5 in shoes. And then one day, Size 5 felt like I was wearing boats on my feet, and I dropped a shoe size to 4. I once wore UK Size 3 which was really tiny, but not any longer. That was a very strange period of shoe buying LOL!

Yet I sometimes take a 6 if its an American brand with American sizing! I used to be confused as heck until I hit upon the one method of ascertaining consistent shoe sizes, and which has served me well even when I take a stab in the dark buying shoes online.

What I Wore Vol. 3 : A Touch of Red for Chinese New Year

cny dress

A caveat if you will – I’m no fashion blogger and never will be, so this is one of the rare “What I Wore” posts I’m doing because I’m in the mood for some fun 🙂 I’m clearly still in the Chinese New Year mood (it officially runs for 15 days woohoo!) and this year, I left my new year shopping till very late and horrors of horrors, found nothing red that caught my eye.

It is tradition for me to wear something red on the 1st day of the Lunar New Year because red = luck and what would be a better way to herald the arrival of luck than to entice it with a red outfit? Instead, I had to make do with a simple burgundy shift which happened to be new. But I hope the red clutch (not new) more than made up for it 😀
