Every year when Summer rolls around, thoughts turn to light makeup. For a few months in a year, most of the world knows what it feels like to live in Malaysia – hot, humid, and sweaty. Not a very conducive environment to wear heavy makeup! LOL!
It’s no wonder then that thoughts also turn to light, tinted lips in place of opaque, bold lip colours.
With this in mind, a reader asked me on Instagram, how I’d compare some of my favourite tinted lip balms, in particular, with the introduction of the Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Lip Balm earlier this year.
I thought this was an interesting question. I was also curious to know if you have any favourite tinted lip balms for that barely there, transparent tint of colour on lips, on days when you’re just not arsed to wear lipstick. Do share!
I shared with you previously, 5 tinted lip balms that I was using last year. Of those, you can see that only 2 have since made the cut into this year.
Since I tried them quite a few years ago, perennial favourites in the tinted lip balm category are firmly held by 2 – Bobbi Brown Extra Lip Tint and the Dior Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm. These are the two that I find myself reaching for and repurchasing most often.
In fact, I often have one or the other in my bags, as I regularly use these to touch up my lip colour as the day wears on. I usually kick off the day with a bold lip colour. This is especially so on days when I know I have to face people, and want to kick some ass 😛 Ass-kicking is best done while wearing a bold lip 😛 After asses are well and truly kicked (or I have my ass kicked in return) I usually touch up with a tinted lip balm. This softens my lip colour, and helps protect my lips as well. It’s just a personal preference.
I must clarify here that when it comes to the Dior Lip Glow, I will only wear the the regular version. This year, Dior released some holographic (sparkle) and matte textures, which I do not like at all. I said so quite vehemently too! 😛 The regular one however, is very good, with a nice, comfortable balm texture that nourishes and moisturises dry lips, while imparting a transparent tint of colour. I will wear that one, and I have repurchased that one. I’d skip the other textures and I wish Dior would too 😛
I don’t mind the Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Lip Balm. I have the shade light, and it is similarly comfortable on lips. Compared to the other two featured here, the Chanel one is the more pigmented. However, if I were to compare them all, I find I don’t reach for it as much as I do the other two. It feels balmy going on but the balm effect does not last as long nod is it as effective as the others. While it works, it isn’t a personal favourite, so if you were to ask me next year, I expect it to have dropped off the list too.
My favourite thus far, is the Bobbi Brown Extra Lip Tint. This is the second tube I’ve purchased in the colour Bare Melon. I love it because it is very emollient and gives my lips shine and a very happy tint of colour. But more importantly, its richer balm texture sinks right into my lips and softens it so it stays flake free and plumped all day. The Bobbi Brown Extra Lip Tint is the one I reach for most often, and the one I pop into my bag without even thinking. I bought it on a whim once, and I’m glad I did – it’s my favourite tinted lip balm and you know that with me, that’s saying a lot! 😀
What is your favourite tinted lip balm this time around?
When I’m feeling lazy, or on weekends, I usually pop on a tinted base (tinted moisturiser, BB Cream or the like), a touch of cheek colour, brows and finish off with a tinted lip balm. It’s all very “barely there” and is now a look I sport very often. Do you have a favourite? 🙂

I really like the Dior one. It’s quite possibly one of the few lip products that I’ve finished using and repurchased. Which reminds me, I probably need to get a new tube soon. I’ve tried a few others such as the ones from Fresh and Clinique but the Dior one is still the best. It delivers moisture as well as a soft tint and gloss.

Hope you picked it up at duty free! 😉 Yes, the Dior one is still one of the best in terms of subtlety of shade and moisturising factor. I used to like the Fresh one but decided I don’t anymore. It goes bad too quickly and melts too much in our heat too.

I really like Bobbi Brown Extra Lip Tint. The colour actually lasts and keeps my lips nice and soft. I should probably use it more.

I have it take up permanent residence in whatever bag I’m using! Just so I can use it for a quick lip refresh if I need it 🙂

I love Annabelle Cosmetics lipsies lip balm – they’re fruity scented, don’t irritate my lips, have great pigment and leave a nice stain behind. Also very budget friendly!

Thanks for the recommendation Angela! It’s a pity we don’t get the brand here 🙁

I’m loving my Kiehl’s Butterstick, it has some SPF and does a great job when my lips are very dry. The one I have in Simply Rose is very pigmented though!

Oh I remember using the Kiehl’s Butterstick too! You’re right, it’s quite pigmented. I did find it a little “harder” than I liked. Maybe I just like the slightly more melty texture of the Bobbi Brown one LOL

I liking the Fresh Sugar lip balms as they have spf, but I look forward to trying the Bobbi Brown one next!

I used to use the Fresh ones too! But I found them got too melted in our heat, and it also went bad quite quickly. Considering they’re quite expensive, I was quite put off! But they have some nice colours!

I Love Canmake Stay On Balm Rouge. I always hoard them whenever I go to Japan (or pester anyone who’s going there to buy me one – or two)
Paris B says
Ooh Canmake! I used to like their makeup 😀

My pick goes to Human Nature Tinted Lip Balm in Flame Tree. It has a nice sheer colour with a hint of mint.
Paris B says
That sounds delish! Thanks for sharing Bernice!

Finally back to report that I tried the Dior one on your rec and I like it! Will be getting the Bobbi Brown one the next time I use up one of my lesser balms.
Have you tried the Malin & Goetz lip moisturizer? No tint, but really good. I went through a period where I guess the moisture barrier on my lips needed to be repaired and the lip moisturizer was one of the only things that would work with it. The Dior Lip Glow also passed the test, but was not quite as moisturizing. Vaseline was ok but definitely third. Avene and other balms were useless.

Hi Kuri, I haven’t tried the Malin & Goetz one, as I don’t know if the distributor here has brought it in 😀 I don’t usually use a lip product nowadays except for night time when I wear a papaw balm to bed LOL
