Che Che New York x Hello Kitty – Not more Hello Kitty!

April 4, 2010 Paris B 23 Comments

I don’t know what it is about Hello Kitty that makes me break out in goosebumps. But there you go. I dislike this Sanrio icon and I personally think it should not be on anything adult – cute or not. For children, there is a certain cuteness to an outfit or accessory with a cartoon character on it.

For adults, I’d say skip it.

The latest collaboration with Hello Kitty is by Che Che New York. I walked past the store in MidValley Megamall on Thursday and could not believe my eyes when I saw the store front. MAC Cosmetics x Hello Kitty was bad enough for me.

Previously Che Che New York as a brand did catch my eye for its whimsical girly designs. They specialize in bags and related accessories – pouches, purses etc. However, the designs aren’t really my style hence I never paid much attention to the brand.

It is heartening to know that the 3 sisters behind Che Che New York are Malaysian. I’m always supportive of a Malaysian venture and I do like the shape of the bags in the collection. I think they are classic and very wearable and practical.

But Hello Kitty? I’m afraid not.

It’s probably just me. Sorry 😛

What do you say to Hello Kitty on adult accessories/fashion?

When I think about Hello Kitty for adults, I always imagine it in high end jewelry and watches, like the ones Kimora Lee Simmons made so famous in New York. ^.^ So yeah. Bags, notsomuch.

I used to like Hello Kitty when I was so many many moons younger. Now, I cringed at the sight of Hello Kitty on bags, clothes, makeup(!) and headbands. It’s only good for those kids, not full-fledged adults. If I see it on a teenager, all is still forgiven but when you see adults in their late 20s or even early 30s still going crazy for the kitty, you know something is wrong somewhere.

P/s: no offense to those Kitty lovers out there but it’s just my two sen about it.

It would be nice to see someone defend that kitty for a change instead of us bashing it silly eh? 😉 I do agree with you though but then you knew that LOL

Thanks for sharing huichi! I think some people were too wary to say they still like HK 🙂

Yup, hello kitty on our stuff! Too childish. It seem that our childhood was not happy 🙂

Honestly, I used to hate Hello Kitty when I was a teenager. I scoff at adults who go crazy over them. But then I started to like pink. And Hello Kitty comes in pink so I kinda find them okay after a while. My love for pink went on say about 3 years or so.

Now as I’m older, I don’t find pink as nice as I thought it was anymore. But throughout the whole time I loved pink, I never had any hello kitty products/ accesories/ clothes because I thought it was too childish/OTT to parade around in a hello kitty top. If it was something that you keep at home like a make up pouch then it’s ok but if its out in public then I’d say no.

Perhaps the problem is because I’m not into pink. Hmm… that said many “adult” Hello Kitty designs tend to take the kitty gothic which is something I’m not sure I prefer over pink!

Hmm, seems like Che Che New York’s Hello Kitty is a tad more mature though, as in Hello Kitty isn’t cutesy-fied as much.

Personally I think Che Che New York have had, in the past, much more childish and quirky designs than Hello Kitty =P

You’re right Adele. Their designs have tended towards the cute and childish (though not with a kid’s price!) which is perhaps why I never really paid them attention. Still, I don’t get the fascination with the kitty do you? 🙂

I’ll go for Accessories, like the real thing! 🙂 I’ve owned one HK necklace given to me by my bro, I could wear that..but not too childish kind! The bags? I’ll give it a skip!

Aww… that’s sweet of your bro. Perhaps something small and not outright kitty cat may be cute on the right person … like you! 😀

The red and skin colour one actually don’t look that childish. But I agree with most of you, that if I were to pay that much for a bag, I prefer a more classy one. I love Hello Kitty, but I really can’t accept myself still donning the kitten all over when walking down Orchard Road. Nice things to add to my collection, but not to bring out.

Wow so cute! I like the beige bag. In fact, I do have Hello Kitty bag design for adult customer which I bought during my long stay in Japan. Whenever I use the bag, people will look at me, either they envy or they hate it. Haha. I don’t mind either because I love Hello Kitty.

Well so long as you love it, there’s no need to bother about whether people envy or hate you. I don’t think they hate you anyway. They are probably wondering where they can get something similar 😉

i’m so OVER hello kitty. Have you heard of the hello kitty cafes in Hong Kong? you can get your pancake, toast etc etc in hello kitty shapes with the pattern burned on the top. insane. the nostalgia has passed.

i find that when i buy stuff that i think is sweet (i.e. cute, but not HK), it ends up i feel slightly ridiculous when i pull it out in adult company, so my buying habits have changed.

on the other hand, for some weird reason, the best portable cutlery kits i’ve found after searching high and low comes with the HK and other cartoon logos on it. Impossible to get it without the cartoon logos. weird that.

I’m not a fan of HK, but I love cute stuff. I’ll buy them, but not a big handbag.

I have plenty of shocking pink accessories that I put inside my ‘elegant’ black handbag (cell phone case, medicine case) but I won’t wear shocking pink bag, especially in office.

I mean, I’m 32 and relatively tall –aka NOT cute!– I can’t wear too much girlie thing 🙂
