Take to the Scottish Highlands with MAC A Tartan Tale Collection

November 5, 2010 Paris B 37 Comments

Suria KLCC reverberated with the sound of bagpipes yesterday evening – a sound that has been likened to that of cats being squeezed in a sack but which I have a strange attraction to – like the Scottish accent. Och Bonnie Lassie!

mac tartan tale collection photos overview

It was the launch of the MAC Winter/Holiday Collection – A Tartan Tale. Although tartan was the order of the day, there were no burly red haired Scots with kilts on – we all know what Scots REALLY wear under their kilts don’t we? You don’t? I’ll tell you below what a Scotsman told me when I asked once 😉

The Tartan Tale collection is huge and like all MAC Holiday collections include travel brush sets and makeup sets. They are all limited edition of course and although I’m not personally drawn to any of the tartan items, finding them rather gaudy, I liked the tartan design etched on the surface of the eyeshadow. They don’t go all the way through, but they are different and they look pretty good, even if it’ll all disappear with regular use.

Here are some selected pictures of the Tartan Tale collection products. I’m not much of a MAC Cosmetics fiend, I’d be the first to admit so I’m not quite all fired up about the products. But I know many of you are, so hopalong now for the photos.

Lip and Eye bags (RM150) – Tartan pouches that can be slung cross body, filled with a selection of lip or eye colour products.

Brush Bags (RM250) – Tartan bags that can be slung cross body filled with travel brush sets. Quality of the brushes felt rather poor. Brushes were stiff and pokey on my skin. But I can see many buying these for the bags.

Eye, Lip and Face Kits (RM180) – the palettes. 6 colour eyeshadow palettes, lip palettes and face palettes. Colours looked a little blah to me. Would likely sell for the packaging.

A Tartan Tale Holiday collection – Eyeshadows (RM85), Lipsticks, Pigments, Pearlglide Eyeliner, Blush (RM75) – the whole works!

I ended up getting Glamora Castle (RM85) – a dark grey eyeshadow with teal stripes. I agonized between this and Golden Crown – gold with bronze stripes, but decided that Golden Crown was too light and glittery. Glamora Castle has an almost satin feel and I liked the shade.

The A Tartan Tale single eyeshadows are larger than the regular eyeshadows so the higher price is to be expected.

So, what did a Scotsman tell me real Scots wear under their kilts?

Answer: Bike shorts! LOL Its to keep their goolies from freezing off 😛

To all of the Hindu faith, Happy Deepavali or Diwali! Here’s a picture of a kolam I took at KLCC.

diwali kolam

It is a design on the floor made by hand, by arranging coloured rice in patterns. Intricate and beautiful no?

To everyone on holiday (that’s most of us in Malaysia and Singapore!) I wish you a happy long weekend! I have a huge project before me so I can’t wait to get down to it 😀

Paris B

MAC Tartan Tale Collection is limited edition and is now available at all MAC stores and counters nationwide. I have no prices but will update once I have them on hand. The A Tartan Tale single eyeshadows are RM85.

Update: Thanks to Yani, here are the prices for the sets: Lip, Eye and Face Kits (palettes) RM180; Lip and Eye Bags RM150; Brush Bags RM250

Connie – Top of the palettes, yes, it is cloth not printed onto plastic.

    Single E/S RM85
    Blusher RM75

The rest of the items that I did not purchase, I didn’t get their prices. 🙂 as the entire collection is HUGE!!!

Not a MAC fiend myself too, and fighting to stay away from them. I heard not-so good reviews about this collection too but I do find myself attracted to their eye shadows..hmmm.

You and me both! My suggestion is to go and check it out (oh dear… “check” it out? 😛 ) and having “plaid” with them I can say they aren’t quite my cuppa 😉 Still, its all worth looking at if only to see what ideas brands can come up with these days 😀

I actually love the packaging of this collection but then I’m a sucker for anything tartan. Butu I’m not really digging any of the shades, they all look so dull, sheer and dupable. 🙁

Not THAT much of a MAC fiend, but I’m waiting for the pigment sets to come out. I called MAC and they said there’s one more month to go. Howell! ^.^ Not digging most of the palettes tho. Read it from Temptalia that the eyeshadow palettes are sub-par. ^.^

I was invited to A Tartan Tale pre-launch party and my eyes were O_O when I saw the entire collection (including those that will be launched officially in Dec). My most favourite sets are the lipglass and pigments sets 🙂 I still don’t know why I didn’t buy them during the event. Now I’ve to wait till Dec! I only got myself The Swinging Violet Mineralize kit, 2 Pearlglide liners and Passing Fancy Dazzleglass Cremes.

This holiday collection is definitely more interesting and beautiful than the last one.

Actually the colours are all very wearable and “normal” colours. MAC usually goes a little nuts but this time it was quite good. Not feeling the packaging for palettes and sets though

Great pictures! I love the tarta scheme but do the shades end up muddled when you swatch or apply them? Is there a point to the pattern on the eyeshadows? 🙂

Point to the pattern – not really. Just look pretty. But there is a 2 tone thing going on so for example, Glamora Castle is grey with blue tones thanks to the teal stripes however story is it doesn’t go all the way through so we’ll see 😉

just wanted to know, have you seen the bobbi brown holiday collection that also offering a travel size brush set costing rm220?? i wasn’t sure which one to buy , the bobbi brown one or the mac a tartan tale? could you please give some pointers? thanks!! 🙂

I haven’t seen the Bobbi Brown set yet. If it is anything like previous years, I’d say Bobbi Brown for sure! I wasn’t enthralled with the MAC travel sets. Their brush sets are usually of poorer quality compared to the full sized brushes which are great stuff. Just my view! If I see the Bobbi Brown one, I’ll let you know what I think 🙂
