Review: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF50+

March 19, 2009 Paris B 38 Comments

When I last wrote about sunscreen, it was to extol the virtues of my holy grail sunscreen by the Australia Cancer Council. However, I ran into a spot of trouble before going away on holiday recently because I wanted to travel light without checking in my luggage, and the contents of my usual sunscreen far exceeded the 100ml allowance for carry on luggage! So, in a fit of urgency, I ran off to the nearest pharmacy and hunted down any sunscreen that had contents below 100ml. You’d be surprised to note that there aren’t many at all!

neutrogena

I don’t use Sunplay or any of those watery sorts – I absolutely detest the texture so I was only looking for the creamy sort. The only one I found to suit my needs was the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF50+ which came in a 88ml tube – hurrah!

I’d seen the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer sunblock around for a while but never had reason to get it so what better time to try it.

Review: Australia Cancer Council Sunscreen

March 5, 2009 Paris B 20 Comments

I first started using the Australian Cancer Council sunscreen quite a few years ago when I read that it was an effective and affordable sunscreen. In Australia no sunscreen is labelled over SPF30 because there is no conclusive evidence that anything over SPF30 is that much more effective in blocking the damaging rays from the sun.

Cancer Council Everyday Sunscreen

So I started using the Cancer Council sunscreen for my body quite a few years ago, and I have not looked back since. Fortunately for me, I’ve been able to get my stock from friends who go to Australia and don’t mind lugging back a tube or tub for me so stock has been kept replenished since my whole family uses it too! I don’t know what I’d do if I ever ran out!

The sunscreen I use is the Cancer Council Everyday Sunscreen SPF30+ which comes in orange packaging. I am finishing up the 1l pump tub I commissioned before and already have a bottle stocked up!

Olay Total Effects Touch of Foundation SPF15 – hot or hype?

February 21, 2009 Paris B 40 Comments

I’d been seeing the ads for the Olay Total Effects Touch of Foundation on television lately and I have been curious about it but too busy to check it out. Yesterday I had a chance to.

Olay Total Effects Touch of FOundation

This is a new addition to Olay’s Total Effects line. I liked the Olay Total Effects cream so I would expect this to perform the same way. Like the Olay Total Effects Cream, it is a moisturiser with 7 in 1 anti-aging therapies and SPF15. What makes it different is the addition of foundation.

Does this sound suspiciously like BB Cream to you? Moisturiser, check! Sunscreen, check! Foundation… check! 🙂

What truly intrigued me was the blurb on the box that said that the foundation comes in 1 shade that will “blend to the skintone of most women”. Fascinating! A one size fits all in cosmetics – unheard of.

Olay Total Effects touch of foundation

Unfortunately, there was no tester available – why on earth do they do this? A tester would go so much further to encourage sales. So I had to regretfully pass on this one until I find a tester – I’m curious about the one size fits all foundation bit. No other brand or product I know of makes this claim.

Have you tried the Olay Total Effects Touch of Foundation? Was it hot or hype for you?

Its Saturday and I have a full day of activities lined up – whee! 😀 Have a great weekend everyone and…

Stay beautiful!

What are Chemical Sunscreens and Physical Sunscreens?

July 23, 2008 Paris B 26 Comments

Monstro left a question in a previous comment asking what the difference was between Chemical Sunscreens and Physical Sunscreens.

Without going into the virtues of either form of sunscreens, a simple explanation of the 2 different types of sunscreens in the market is as follows.

Chemical Sunscreens

Chemical Sunscreens are so called because they contain synthetic chemicals which absorb UV rays thereby absorbing radiation. These chemicals work by absorbing UVA or UVB but usually also contain ingredients to block UVA rays. According to the American Melanoma Foundation:-

Chemical sunscreens contain special ingredients that act as filters and reduce ultraviolet radiation penetration to the skin. These sunscreens often are colorless and maintain a thin visible film on the skin. These sunscreens usually contain UVB absorbing chemicals and more recently contain UVA absorbers as well.Continue Reading
