5 Niche and Cult Skincare and Beauty Brands to consider trying at Caliata

November 22, 2017 Paris B 13 Comments

This post is written in collaboration with and kindly sponsored by Caliata.com

About a month ago, I introduced you to Caliata.com, an online beauty store based in Malaysia. What made Caliata stand out from other websites I’ve come across, was their brand selection (and the fact that their founder is very passionate about skincare and beauty herself). As I scanned the range of brands and products they carried, I found my excitement mounting. Here, finally, was a local online store that carried beauty, especially skincare, brands and products I like or have been curious about, but could only get online from overseas!

As a beauty and skincare buff, I’d tried, or am familiar with most of the brands carried by Caliata. They are primarily niche or cult brands, that aren’t necessarily easily available on mainstream websites, or stores. For some of them, if you haven’t been keeping your finger on the cult skincare pulse, you may not be familiar with the products or brands at all. So, I thought I’d share with you a sampling of 5 of these niche and cult skincare brands that stand out on Caliata. If you have tried any of them, I’d love to hear your thoughts too, because I may have sampled, but not tried them all! 🙂

For a first time anti-aging kickstart try The Face Shop The Therapy First Serum

September 30, 2016 Paris B 6 Comments

If there’s one skincare product that’s taking the world by storm, almost quietly but surely, it’s the pre-essence serum. We’re seeing quite a few popping up aren’t we? Korean brand, The Face Shop has now introduced theirs – The Face Shop The Therapy First Serum. Blended with micro crystal particles, essential oils and French Thalassotherapy essential water, this lightweight watery serum-essence offers triple benefits of anti-aging, anti-dryness and high moisture.

To boost the anti-aging benefits with the use of 3 types of natural essential oils in the form of sandalwood, avocado and palmarosa, the essential oils are blended with natural polysaccharide to form micro crystal particles, that help with absorption and penetration into the skin.

I took the Therapy First Serum and The Therapy Moisture Blending Cream for a spin recently, courtesy of The Face Shop, and I have some brief thoughts on them below 🙂

Glossy nails made easy with the Scholl Velvet Smooth Electronic Nail Care System

Beauty blogger or no, I detest going for manicures. Nail polish isn’t my thing, and while I enjoy the look of shiny nails, I don’t have that kind of patience to sit with an emery board to file and buff and shine my nails. Takes a lot of elbow grease too!

So, when Scholl told me that there is a gadget that can do all that for me electronically, yes, I was intrigued! The gadget in question is the new Scholl Velvet Smooth Electronic Nail Care System, that promises to give you the appearance of healthy, shiny, glossy nails, in no time at all! Perfect for busy ladies like us 😉

Plagued by Sensitive Skin? 3 Tips on how to care for sensitive skin

February 16, 2016 Paris B 4 Comments

I had an interesting conversation with a friend a few weeks ago. Said friend has very sensitive skin that reacts strongly to all sorts of skincare products, so we were having a discussion about what could be done, or where to find fragrance-free products.

I went off and did some quick research to find out that sensitive skin:-

  • Turns red easily and may even break out in rashes when exposed to the sun
  • Has redness or blotchiness in the skin – and when you rub it, it doesn’t dissipate
  • Has a stinging or itching sensation when you use certain skincare products especially fragranced products, and in severe cases, may cause you to break out in hives

It has been found that sensitive skin can be caused by harsh climates, pollutants in the air and water, hormones, stress, and the use of cosmetics. These are just some of the irritations that aggravate sensitive skin and according to a Project Omnibus Report in 2014, more than 50% of women in Asia claim to experience sensitive skin in their entire year.

While I don’t generally have sensitive skin, there are times when my skin reacts to weather, products or hormones and stress. When I was undergoing a very stressful period recently, I’d have an unexplainable itch and little bumps on my neck and legs, and horribly dry skin on my hands. Drove me mad! My face was fortunately spared, but well, hello breakouts!

So in my research on how to address, or at least alleviate the uncomfortable conditions experienced by sensitive skin, here are 3 tips I came across.

The pup & I celebrating birthdays within weeks of The pup & I celebrating birthdays within weeks of each other 😁 Kiddo turns 4 and celebrated with specially made doggy burgers & fries.

I got him in early Jan 2020 so he’s only been with me less than 4 years but it’s been incredible to see how he’s grown (or not), and how he’s slowly mellowed with age (or not!). He’s still that crazy rambunctious puppy who terrorises other dogs, begging them to play and barking at them when they don’t. He’s a greedy fella who makes me think I’m the greatest chef in the world (in the dog world maybe!) and he still gets crazy eyes when excited.

But I’ve also found more white hair around his eyes and he sleeps in more and later now. He doesn’t even get up early enough to jump onto the bed as he used to 😔

4 years is practically adulthood in doggy years and I’m thankful that we have the opportunity to spend lots of time together even if I bemoan having to bring him everywhere I go.

Happy 4 years boy ❤️

This explains my lack of updates generally. Been very busy preparing for this, and amazingly enough, moving operations again! It’s a long sucky story but it might have just turned out for the best for us so as they say about windows opening and closing, sometimes you just have to go with the flow and look for the open window when doors close.
