Save and Splurge: The IT bag edition

January 15, 2012 Paris B 13 Comments

ysl muse 2 oroton luca satchel

Left: Oroton Luca Satchel Right : YSL Muse 2

IT bag. What does that mean anyway? I never quite understood.

But one of the IT bags that is quite the rage is the YSL Muse 2. For an IT bag, I personally think it quite nondescript. There is absolutely nothing on the Muse 2 that says YSL. No logo, no engraving, nothing. The only bit that does say YSL is a stud at the bottom of the bag. So if you know it, you know it. If you don’t, then c’est la vie! 🙂

Naturally, I love it 😀 But I also spotted a similar design in the Oroton Luca Satchel.

Splurge: YSL Muse 2 Leather Version – RM6000

The YSL Muse 2 full leather version is a right splurge at RM6000 locally. Each panel is leather sewn on a suede body which is quite unique. It fastens with a metal clasp that clicks shut, and 2 straps that button down. Inside, you get a large compartment divided by a zippered compartment that divides the space. The strap is long enough to sling on the shoulder yet short enough to be hand held. Colours change depending on the seasons and they come in different materials as well and prices differ according to material. The full canvas or leather-canvas version is cheaper. Definitely a splurge item but one that will easily carry you from work to a dinner without too many problems.

Save: Oroton Luca Satchel – RM25xx

I haven’t seen the Oroton Luca Satchel in person yet but I saw it in a magazine recently. Design wise it looks like they were inspired by the YSL Muse 2. This one is a handheld satchel with a top handle, and there is a detachable strap to allow you to sling the bag on your shoulder or cross body if you like. The top handle looks like it is too short to sling on the shoulder, so it is at most an arm carry. It comes in full leather or a leather-canvas mix, combinations also offered by the YSL Muse 2. It looks practical but the bar at the top makes this one look a little more structured for work and less playful. Price-wise, it offers room for instant gratification without having to go on a bread and water diet for months, especially when you get it on sale (online at the Oroton.com store, the one pictured here is going for under RM1k which makes it even more of a save!).

My Pick

I’m picking the Splurge YSL option in this one, simply because I think the Oroton Luca Satchel a little too structured for my liking. For a work bag however, I think the Oroton Luca Satchel worth taking a look at. I do think Oroton makes good bags and their leather is nice. They are also less obvious or common than say Coach, but come in the same price bracket so you can savour being a little more unique for now, until everyone else catches on 😛

Have you seen either bag? Just based on visual design, which one would you pick? 😀

Oroton is available at the Oroton store at The Gardens. YSL is available at the YSL store at Pavilion KL

Save and Splurge is where I show you similar items by different brands that I have tried. They may not work quite the same way, but it’ll offer you options for your wallet for a similar effect/product. Do note however, that it is based on products I have tried, so whilst there are many save and splurge options out there, these are my views and choices. You can find more under the category of Challenges.

I love the croc muse 2 you posted here! Colour is sweet and feminine and my take is still muse2 cos well, proton has been a little uninspired lately. I’m just not wowed and I do still want to own a Muse2 one day. One day 🙂

I loved the colour too! I picked it because colour wise it matched the Oroton (which I think you mean vs proton? 😛 ) I did see the croc versions in store and they don’t look as lush as the leather one actually. I’d stick to the leather.

I don’t particularly fancy either but if I had to pick, I’d go for the Oroton. Reptile skin gives me the heebie-jeebies! And that’s the only reason why I wouldn’t choose the YSL, but the form and function of the bag does look more appealing.

Ooh me too! I don’t like exotic skin on my accessories. Give me good ol’ cow or sheep any day but the YSL does come in regular calf leather and canvas *whew*

At first glance I preferred the Oroton one because I thought the YSL was ugly! But then the colours, the texture, and the design of the bag grew on me and the Oroton bag looked boring in comparison.

Haha it does grow on you right? My first thought when I saw the YSL was the same as you too so you’re not alone 😉

WOW! Can I come pet your Muse 2? It’s more my style than the Oroton satchel, and it’s croc! I do I wish it were more structured so it doesn’t bunch up/slouch, though I realize that’s part of the appeal! There should be a “Super Splurge” option for the Hermes Kelly. 😛

Good on ya Jamilla! I’ve decided to curb my bag purchases this year – lets see how long I last! 😛

I thought you were referring to “I.T.” laptop backpacks. A case of same planet, different worlds! hehe…! 🙂 I did wonder what kind of designer laptop bag was out there…
