Daiso stores are like Aladdin’s cave of treasures. Amongst the strange things you find in there, you sometimes find gems. I’m terribly pleased to see the Daiso store in Pavilion KL because that means I can now visit more often! I don’t go down to The Curve much so I’d been out of the Daiso scene for a while. Ah, but I’m back! 😀
Daiso, for the uninitiated, is a Japanese 100 Yen store. Or in this case, a RM5 store. Everything in store is RM5 whether you like it or not and everything comes from Japan. I love going in there to look at the storage because next to Ikea, they have the best (and cheapest) storage options – baskets, drawer dividers, boxes… Do not be like my friend who came up to me, held up a pack of pens and said “How much do you think this is?” The look I gave was pure incredulity 😛
I’ve got here some interesting, cute, fun and quite useful stuff you could pick up just for a fiver, and some of them are even beauty related 😛 Yeah, I know. Wow 😛
This one isn’t beauty related though – a Milk Tooth Box.
Its a little box that comes in a few different designs even flat round boxes, for you to keep your child’s milk teeth after they drop out or are extracted. Perhaps this is something cultural in Japan? I have only heard of the Tooth Fairy but she didn’t expect the tooth to be placed in a box I’m sure. However, as the label suggests you can also use it as a trinket box for very small items e.g. earrings or a ring.
Oh here’s another strange item – Adhesive Ear Clean Stick.
This is something for, well, cleaning your ears! There is actually a whole selection of ear picks in Daiso from some really cute ones topped with dollies to fancy ones that look like hair chopsticks to well, this. At least its hygienic? *shrug*
Oh and yet another strange but potentially practical item – ear caps.
These disposable plastic caps look like shower caps that you get in hotels, and are meant to just cover your ears. As the bag suggests, its useful for when you are dyeing your hair so your dye doesn’t stain your skin. But what about your neck and forehead then? (speaking from personal experience)
Ok the following 3 more items are more conventional and are beauty related 🙂
A Foldable Stand Mirror for just RM5. Perfect for travelling or if you have very limited space to live in and do your makeup. You can fold it so it stands up, and then open it up so you can store it flat. Practical stuff.
This one’s actually a display box. When you stand it on its side, you can keep little toys in each of the 4 compartments for display – you can see the little toy cars in the background. However, I had a brainwave and turned it so it lay flat and tada! Lipstick storage! Its bigger than the lipstick storage cases in the makeup aisle so I think this is actually better. Or it could be used for holding your trinkets or if you have just a small selection of cosmetics, your cosmetics. Just RM5 <- I sound like an ad 😛
And finally, a huge magnetic sheet for just RM5! I told you before you could look in DIY or hardware stores for magnetic strips. In Daiso they sell them in largish sheets that you can cut to size and its only a fiver for the whole sheet. Perfect if you depot your stuff. You can even write on them so you can label your colours and avoid duplicates.
The first item right at the top is a little metal mesh stand that you can use to hold your earrings. Just stick the earring hooks through the holes and it makes a pretty little stand for your dresser. I thought it very cute. It can’t hold a lot, but you can rotate your earrings as you go and not have them jumbled or kept away in drawers.
Do excuse the grainy spy shot photos – cameras aren’t allowed… but mobile phones are 😛
Do you enjoy going to Daiso as much as I do? Do you have a star Daiso find to share? Even if I buy nothing I enjoy traipsing down each aisle to see what is new, and what might come in useful for the home. I don’t quite do the cosmetics – I’m a little leery of it but I do look because sometimes, there are some really strange things available like the Nose Shaping powder for one 😀

Think all of us have a Daiso obsession. Can’t walk past one without going in for a ‘quick’ look. Thanks for showing those magnetic sheets, exactly what I need to organize my spice jars and not being prohibitively expensive.
ParisB says
Yes! I was very pleased to see the magnetic sheets – could do so much with them! 😀 I’m just glad there’s one relatively accessible to me now – haven’t bought a lot from there but there’s always that potential to 😉

I love the sponge detergent! I use it to clean my makeup sponges and brushes. Cleans super well. I always buy a few bottles whenever I go to Daiso. It’s a must-visit place whenever I’m in KL. I’m from Sarawak, by the way 🙂

Hi Penny! I have that sponge detergent too! 😀 I sometimes use it for cleaning sponges but I’ve stopped using it for brushes because I found that my brushes were feeling “stripped” and dry. Don’t want to spoil them so I use them once in a long while if any brush looks too dirty or stained with colour, but I stick to baby shampoo for regular washes 🙂

I love wondering around Daiso, they have the most interesting things! I managed to get a $2 makeup sponge cleaner that is so so useful and good.
ParisB says
Haha I think most people have that sponge cleaner – works a treat! 😀
~Reena~ says
I love Daiso! Everytime masuk also must buy something lah. Never ‘tengok2’ only.
ParisB says
LOL! I used to be like that too! I loved buying the storage compartments for sorting out my fridge! 😀
Sam says
I heart Daiso! I spend at least $20SG when I’m there. In Australia, the price each is $2.80 which really doesn’t roll off the tongue.
I love my electric eraser and stationery from there.
ParisB says
Electric eraser?! I’m so going to check that out just because it sounds so terribly cool! 😀

Daiso is so fun! I love that you can actually find high quality items that hold so much more value than a mere 100 yen. I mostly buy non-beauty related items like stationery and small kitchen supplies, but I love cotton puffs from there, and I swear every girl here uses Daiso sponge cleaner that can also be used for makeup brushes.
ParisB says
Yes indeed! I’m constantly amazed at the quality of some products. Its like, why bother looking elsewhere when you can just get the same or better quality stuff from Daiso? Some products may be a little pricey compared to elsewhere but its handy having it all in one place 😀 I have seen their cotton puffs but never tried – will get a pack next time on your say so! 😉 and yes that sponge cleaner – its iconic!
xin says
love their storage stuff too, and of course the life-saving vacuum bag!
ParisB says
Oh yes! How could I forget their vacuum bag 😀
Jamilla says
I LOVE Daiso! And they’re eyeshadows are actually really good!
ParisB says
I’ve never really tried their cosmetics – a bit wary but I’ll take your word for it! 😀
Hanny says
I LOVE DAISO~
Don’t tell anyone, but I use a remote-control holder to hold my tube-ish stuff. Lippies, mascaras, brushes, combs, and some of my compacted stuff. ^.^
Another one that I like is their fake eyelashes. Idk why, but they stand out more on me, and they are easier to apply. Some of them even come in 2 pairs per box, heehee!
I want to get the earring stands you showed and the eyebrow templates next time I get there.
ParisB says
I think a remote control holder is a clever storage tool – you SHOULD tell everyone 😛

I love Daiso! I can never walk out of that store empty handed… lol… The japanese are the best! They have everything for every little thing!! I first saw a shop similar like this in Hong Kong a few years ago… I was so amazed when they sold a bottle organiser for those ketchup/soy sauce bottles that you keep in the fridge! just can’t describe how innovative they are… lol…
ParisB says
I know! I have fridge organizers from Daiso! Trays and compartments to hold bottles and stuff *hangs head* Daiso is an amazing place. You never know what you need till you see it there 😛
bubbles says
I love Daiso. I will just wonder in the store finding stuffs to buy when I am bored! Bad habit.. hehe..
ParisB says
Haha I’m guessing you live near one? I’m sort of glad I have the make the effort to go or I’d be filling my house with lots of Daiso things hehe….
AT says
I love Daiso too! Could spend hours wandering in there and coming out with bagfuls of stuff I don’t actually need. I love their clear folders with the *side* opening pockets! I get lots of comic/magazine/dvd/VHS zippered pouches to organise or to hold various loose items at home. I also buy the net “bags” for the sink to use in the shower stall floor-trap to trap hairs. And of course, the sponge cleanser! The milk tooth box you showed is a good buy! I actually bought something very similar but it was SG$13.90 or something like that a piece!
I need to hunt out the remote control holder that someone mentions here–I bought a few of those in Bangkok years ago, and find them very useful. Also need to try out the electric eraser! I saw it but written it off as gimmicky, but hey, if it’s a favourite, I’m game to try! 🙂
ParisB says
Could I just ask what you do with a milk tooth box? Except for the obvious of course 🙂
I have to agree about the practical folders, pouches and boxes and things there is in Daiso. I have things I don’t use anymore like keep warm food carriers, sushi makers, fancy tooth picks … relics of my bento making days. And they are great for finding stuff to make cute bento lunch boxes with!
AT says
Toothbox? Really for the obvious. LOL. I bought 2 of those over-priced ones (compared to Daiso, that is) for storing my kids’ milkteeth, but realised they don’t work too well for me since I like to label the tooth (which & when) as well, and in the end, ended up storing them in little ziploc baggies (huge yay for Daiso ziploc baggies!!! I have packets of varying sizes too!) where I can pop in a label.
I recently bought Halloween stuff for my children–hats, masks, pumpkin baskets, wands and even a cape from Daiso. The selection was nothing short of amazing!
ParisB says
Ooh I didn’t know people actually kept their children’s milk teeth! 😯 I just discovered Daiso’s little ziplock baggies too! God send! I used to have a headache trying to find these odd bits and bobs. Now I just head down to Daiso 😀
nicoles mirror says
looking for a stud earring holder. Damn forget to checkout daiso!!! XP Thanks for reminding me!!! XD

You’re most welcome and it’ll be cheap and work! 😉

There are THREE Daiso stores near me – the two in 1 Utama (one in each wing) and also the one at the Curve; I go to the one in 1U’s new wing is because I can collect points on my ONECARD and I can redeem the points like cash.
Last thing I bought was a fan pouch that I’m using for my glass straw in my bag. If I study the shelves any better, the money would fly out of the wallet faster, so I don’t scrutinise. But I do go when I need something I could’ve sworn I’ve seen there before.
Some things are worth the RM5; others not so much 😛 It used to be cheaper in Singapore, but it’s now about the same with the current exchange rate…
ParisB says
Oh my! 3 Daiso stores? That’s as close to Daiso heaven as you probably get 😀 I have to agree that some items in there are quite WTF? but some are really practical stuff or can be turned into practical stuff. Its always a good place to start looking, and if its not there, its probably in Ikea LOL!
Saphy says
I love Daiso 😛 can never resist going into it if I pass by haha
ParisB says
Sounds like the rest of us here too! ;D

Some stuff is actually made in China, hence the low cost. What are magnetic sheets? Now, you’ve got me interested too! 🙂 I’ve been told that the shrine of Daiso in IOI Mall is the largest in Malaysia and is a must-visit!
ParisB says
I’m going to hazard a guess that almost ALL the stuff are made in China 😀 At least I wouldn’t be surprised if they were. Magnetic sheets are sheets which pliable magnet, you know like those fridge magnets you sometimes get free from insurance companies or banks? You can cut them up and use it to stick up stuff or if you depot your makeup, use it to stick your pans to metal surfaces. I didn’t know that about IOI mall – must make a trip to the Daiso shrine then eh? 😀
Jan S says
You must get the makeup sponge detergent. it cleans better than anything I’ve tried!
ParisB says
I have that 😀 And yes it cleans makeup sponges a treat!
LeGeeque says
YER, why your Daiso so fun wan? I spent $20 last Friday at Daiso for crockery. 😛 Also, the DAiso here is the $2.80 shop which isn’t exactly cheap. It used to be $2.50 🙁
ParisB says
Daiso does the cutest Japanese looking crockery! I’m always tempted to buy a set but then it always works out to a bomb 😛 $2.80 just doesn’t have the zing of a $2 store eh?
JackieA says
I have the display box…..which I have been using to store my lippies! I have the Alex (Ikea) storage drawers to store my cosmetics and knew that Daiso would be the perfect place to get storage boxes that would fit my purpose and the drawers. Daiso is such a treasure trove!!
ParisB says
When I saw the display box I just knew it’d be a perfect lipstick storage 😀 For narrow spaces, I use the underwear storage for lipsticks – works a treat too! I know, it sounds weird, but look for a narrow longish box with separated compartments. Its meant to store underwear but it works very well for lippies 😉
Honey says
Funny you mentioned the nose shaper…….I have that! It’s brown shadow and highlight meant to be used on the nose area for shading/countouring. I was skeptical at first, but now I use it daily. It had replaced regular shadow, in fact the brown shade is just right. For me it was a great buy 🙂
ParisB says
Oh my! Sorry I made fun of it – it just called out for me to 😛 So glad it works for you though. That’s RM5 very well spent! 😀
