This is going to be a strange thing to say, but these Kotex Wow sanitary pads landed on my desk right in the nick of time to trial! Ahem. TMI? 😛 I mean these aren’t things you can just trial off the bat – there is a time and occasion for everything, as they say 😛
So, sanitary pads. How exciting can they be? Very, if Kotex would have you believe it. Here’s a funny story about Kotex, I thought I’d share before I tell you about these new pads.
When I was in school, my teacher told us that she got her son to go to the local store to help pick up a box of Kotex for her. The young boy jumped on his bike and cycled off, yelling “Kotex! Kotex” at the top of his lungs so he wouldn’t forget! Needless to say the whole neighbourhood knew what he was off to the stores for.
Yes, Kotex has been around for a long long time. But I’ve never used them, interestingly enough.
But to move with the times, Kotex has gone and given the ol’ neglected pads a high fashion design ostensibly for the fashion forward female. I do have 2 questions as to why this would be necessary.
First. Sanitary pads aren’t something you’d flaunt, nor is it something you’d wear to make you feel good or sexy, like sexy pretty lingerie. Most times, if you have to use a sanitary pad, you feel… for want of a better word, like crap! You’re bloated, you’re cramping, you have mood swings and you just feel awful. My mood and PMS symptoms weren’t alleviated by the pretty looking designs on the pads, I’m sorry to confess.
Second. By the time you use the sanitary pad, and its time to discard it, you aren’t about to go gawk at the design… or what’s visible of it. You also aren’t likely to invite people to look at it (gag!) You just want it as far away from your body as possible.
So, from a personal view point, I cannot see how a sanitary pad with designs is a good idea. However all that said, I have never used Kotex sanitary pads before this so this is also a quick review of the Kotex Luxe Ultrathin Sanitary Pads instead.
Hey, I found myself liking these ultrathin pads! I do still use cloth pads when I’m at home but for work, I’ve gone back to disposables because its just more convenient. Long hours + cloth pads don’t go very well. I do still find cloth pads infinitely more confortable, but when I do use disposable pads, I always go for ultra thin ones and these are lovely.
Very thin, yet absorbent and at 23cm, a comfortable length to prevent “accidents”. Does its job well enough, and is comfortable enough against the skin (without giving me a rash), so I’m quite happy with these.
Pricing wise, its a bit pricier than what I’m used to using – Whisper Ultra. But its more comfy coz of the cottony top layer although I like the dry feel of Whisper’s. I guess we can’t have it all.
Cons: Not sure about the designs on the pads
If you’d like to inject some colour into your monthly torture, you’d like to know that the individually wrapped Kotex Luxe Ultrathin Design Pads comes a pack of 6 (3 designs in a pack) and in a reusable drawstring polybag. The tins hold 6 pads in 3 different designs and are limited edition till 31 December 2010 or while stocks last.
Personally, I’m not about to get out there and go nuts over these for the designs on the pads. But I will consider getting the Kotex Ultrathin pads, or the plain ones anyway, when I next run out. At least I know now I have options!

I really don’t get why these things are getting more and more expensive… and designs?? what a strange marketing ploy…
ParisB says
Perhaps if the design was on the pouch not so much on the pad itself, and if it wasn’t priced higher as a result, I might be more forgiving? Coz the pad does work very well – so well I might even switch over from my regular brand.

hihi.. i am a new mom so i havent had my menses over a year already 🙂 This seems just a sales strategy, as pads serve no purpose other than collecting discards which meant to be disposed. (but ah.. why baby diapers are so cute-ly design leh……)
ParisB says
Coz baby diapers have their designs on the outside, and that’s all they wear sometimes? 😉
Nikki says
So Cute, I am the type who would get excited for these! hahah so childish!
ParisB says
Not childish m’dear! There’s a market for everything for everyone! 😉

I used to love their ultrathin pads, until they re-branded it to “Luxe” and hiked up the price… 🙁 So now I’m giving Libresse a try. The advertisement with Adibah Noor was just too cute… 😀
ParisB says
ooh ya the Libresse ad is cute – I haven’t thought of trying them mainly cos I’m ultra fussy about ultra thin pads 🙂
Jo says
Funnily enough, I was just wondering the other day when will ParisB be doing a write-up on sanitary pads and here it is! 🙂
Gosh I have the same irritating rash problem too when I use pads. I’ve been using the other Kotex Luxe (for heavy days I think – it comes in a black box) and it’s been quite good actually – rash wasn’t so profound. Will definitely try this out too!
P/S: Cloth pads? Urgh! The thought of it just makes me cringe!
ParisB says
HAHA! I don’t experiment with pads hence the lack of sharing 😉 But it wasn’t until recently that I put 2 and 2 together re: pad rash and when I realized that the Kotex Luxe pads didn’t give me a rash. That’s a very good reason for me to switch brands, cost or no.
As for cloth pads, they are great – just a bit bulkier and messy to clean up but its not that bad 🙂
LeGeeque says
Limited edition for sanitary pads?! Have they completely lost their marbles?! It’s apt that you’re writing this because I’m going through the same crap now and am in quite a snarly mood.
Personally, I wouldn’t get it just cos it looks cute. The ultrathin and ultra absorbent does it for me more than the cute design. I mean, who gives a rat’s ass about it looking cute? I just want to make sure I don’t look like crap at this time 😛
ParisB says
Yup! So long as its thin and works to keep “accidents” away, I’m happy. I don’t need the designs on the pads – wish they didn’t make that the selling point 🙁
Jessica says
LE for pads..hmm. Who would keep em around long enough? *shakes head* I’ve been a user of Kotex since…13 years ago so I do like the pads. But I find myself disappointed at their new marketing strategy coz I can’t find my trusty overnights!
ParisB says
They don’t do overnights anymore? I thought they did in like 32cm or something? I think I’m one of the rare few who don’t use overnights 😛 TMI I know…
shuaddict says
In a way I do like how they are trying to spin it into something that doesn’t need to be hidden. As in girls don’t need to feel ashamed if someone sees their ‘supplies’.
As for the design it’s not something that will do it for me although I do prefer them ultrathin. I do love the new Libresse ones so may give this a try too.
ParisB says
Hmm… that is the marketing strategy but then I’d expect the designs on the outside cover not on the inside of the pad. The outside plastic cover is either pink or orange btw, nothing designer there sadly enough.
synical says
Sorry – not about to buy these anytime soon. Cute, but no.
ParisB says
Haha… seems to be the consensus 😉
Sabrina says
i find this whole design on a pad idea a waste of time and money. nicely designed lingerie, someone’s gonna look at it.
a soiled flowery pad? uhm..
ParisB says
haha… yeah. If it was the pouch that was floral it might make better sense eh?

i like libresse!
