I’m making a trip soon and am trying my utmost best to pack light. Yet, I want to look a little more chic on my travels this time.
A bit of a conundrum because I do tend to dress for comfort when I travel, and comfort for me means jeans, sturdy walking shoes or boots and T-shirts. Perhaps a serviceable jacket if its cold. I usually dress this way, be it an adventure holiday or a city holiday.
I’m going to the city this time, and I’m a bit tired of the whole jeans and tee look, so I thought I’d pack some nicer clothes this time, just in case I get the chance to go somewhere nice or to dine in a nice restaurant. I don’t want to feel out of place in my jeans and T-shirts 😛
I was thinking a wrap dress that travels well, and perhaps tights, in case it gets cold. My main problem is the shoes. I don’t want an extra pair of shoes taking up space in my bag.
Yet it seems that dressing up on vacation tends to result in accessories or shoes taking up extra space in the luggage. Perhaps I’d say hang it all! and just buy my shoes where I’ll be going 😀 What a great excuse to shop eh? 😉
Do you dress for comfort when you travel? Or do you make the effort and dress up a little better (depending where you travel to of course) and if you do, how do you do it?!

i don’t particular dress up during travel or holiday… i still prefer jeans and t shirts as it’s comfy… if there’s any occasions that i really need to dress up, yes ! this is a great excuse to do some shopping! hehehehe… who knows the dress & shoes that i brought there might not suitable for the functions… so i think is better to get them there.. haha…

You have an excellent point! (plus a great excuse to do a bit of shopping! 😉 )

Depends which country you go to. I was in Florence a couple of weeks ago and the people there dress very very well. No matter locals or tourists. Mostly tourists though.
I think going neutral is a good idea. I wore a navy cotton dress which is very comfortable on my recent flight. I think beats jeans and tee in terms of comfort on flight. My trip last week was a for work training in Paris. I need to dress in smart casual. I pack with me neutrals e.g. navy, white, black, grey…dark jeans works well along with a light colour top and a floral scarf.
I have 1 pair of mary jane with kitten heels which are comfortable. Its purple and shiny PVC…hahaaa…doesn’t really sound like they match all my outfits but they actually do. 😀
In my vacation trip in London and Italy, I’m usually in comfortable getup. The most dressy is denim skirt and tee with a dressy scarf (mainly in London, too hot in Italy) and…..Fitflops!
ParisB says
That’s some great tips! 🙂 I’ll bear them in mind when I pack. I think I need the Pietra fitflops 😛

I always wear what’s comfortable and have a cardigan and a scarf with me just in case it is cold. My favourite shoes are Camper leather sneakers. They’re so comfy and light.
ParisB says
Ooh I’ve always wanted a pair of Campers! 😀 But even on sale they are out of price range 🙁

Going on a trip soon…..yay!!
For me, I’d dress for comfort, after being told by hubby many times…”comfort 1st when travelling”. Hmmmm…..so just got used to it.
I usually wear cargo pants while traveling on the plane or any mode of transportation…..many pockets, esp with a kid who constantly needs some form of entertainment…so sweets in one pocket, crayons in another, etc etc etc. A bit like Mary Poppins! 😛
And I’d wear shoes, usually sneakers, though sometimes, sandals.
In my suitcase, an extra pair of dress shoes/sandals. Clothing – Tees, tanks, bermudas, leggings, capris, a dress pants, at least 2 dresses – one formal and one casual, accessories like scarves. That’s for summer, of course.
For Fall and winter, of course, cardi, sweatshirts, jeans, wool pants, leggings, jacket, a pair of boots and even thermal undergarments (if I am traveling to sub-zero temperatures!)
ParisB says
Thanks for sharing! Those are some good tips

Dress, cardi and tights if I’m travelling to a cooler destination and the same without tights if its a warmer one 🙂
I used to wear jeans all the time too until I discovered its way more comfortable sitting down long hours with a dress/skirt (its lighter-weight too!)
ParisB says
I might try flying in a skirt… although I’m not sure if its a great idea LOL
Shay says
You absolutely must try it! Its great! Just cover up the legs with a blanket from the flight if its not a long dress/skirt.

If i’m going to a big developed city, where most ppl dress stylishly, yes i’ll dress in style, especially for the colder climate. I’ll bring clothes that I can mix and match and layer (to keep myself warm) however I like and still look good. I’ll avoid bringing clothes that require ironing.
However, if i were to go to a warm country, where most ppl don’t dress up, i’ll most likely dress in shorts and tees and tanks with slippers! Or probably some nice sandals.
Basically I just blend into the crowd 😀
ParisB says
That’s a great idea to blend in. I’m trying to find a way to, without lugging too many things around 😛
Renz says
I dress more for comfort than style.
Like I might go for jeggings/skinny jeans with tunics which can easily to converted to mini dresses, as for vacation time, I’ll try albeit unsuccessfully to lighten my luggage load by picking those easy to match and mix clothes. Though of course, it’ll depend highly on the places you go, like I heard if you are going bangkok, just pack a couple days of clothes and shop for the rest there! As for shoes, if I’m going to a city area, I’ll pack along a pair of flats, at least I’ll be able to look dressy enough if I’m going to restaurants and still be able to wear them while trampling through the town, and they don’t take up much space!
I prefer to wear jeans / cargo pants on the plane, very convenient..especially when I’ll running late.

Depends on – where you are going, what you are going to do there and the weather! If it is a summer holiday then lots of shorts, flip flops, tank tops and summer dresses. in bright colours. It is autumn in Europe now so if you are headed to European cities then dark jeans with nice tops or blouses, simple accessories and dark comfortable flats would be excellent. Light jacket and scarf for the mornings and nights and a couple of dresses with black tights. Great tip above to blend in with the locals, makes you stand out less as a tourist!
Shay says
Yes. I wore black tights on my business trip.
The best way to blend in is to buy clothes there and immediately wear them. Haha….
Shay says
Oh, I forgot to say that the black tights is a great idea.
Sabrina says
i dress for style. in fact when i was in japan, i brought only one dress and one pair of shoes (other than some toiletries) with me. wore what i bought throughout the trip. ended up with 20kg check in plus 3 handcarry. haha.
Tine says
I used to just bring my comfortable, serviceable clothes when I’m traveling, which was why my holiday photos used to look quite awful (sandals to a swanky restaurant? Yikes!)
Nowaways I pack clothes that I can wear repeatedly without it looking boring. A black summer dress, a couple of different coloured cardis, a scarf, etc, and you have at least three different looks! Black yoga pants for flying, which can also double up as dressy pants when I go out (I have one from Target which is perfect for multitasking). Different coloured tank tops, one black cardie – many different looks. Just a few examples 🙂

I’m heading to USofA next week and this what I’ll pack:-
I’ll wear bulky item when I’m on the plane- jeans, jacket and boots (yes boots cuz it can be really cold in the plane and its a blessing wearing em)…
Pack less on bottoms. My essential will be Jeans or pants, a pair of shorts(if cold country dont bother) ,tights & maybe throw in a denim skirt -depending on weather… thats it…but i’ll pack bit more of tops and dressess- which lighter
Depending which country u travel to…Cosmopolitan I would dress to the nine- but not OTT- dressess, funky top that look great pair up with jeans w/o looking like a tourist..:P
Google those fashion on the country you going to as you dont want to be screaming “tourist” I’m sure there’s lotsa clothes where u can pair/layer without looking
Throw in beret & Scarves!!! It don’t take lots space!
If you look at the LV pic you post, she’s actually wearing very simple mix of pants and jacket… pair it up with beret or scarves (it dont take lots space) and there you looking glam!
For shoes, I’m already wearing my boots in the plane so prob pack 1-2 pairs either flats, sandals or my trusty Havaianas
If you’re heading to shopping paradise….HECK pack 1-2 days of clothes and SHOP your way through… I’m heading with 1 luggage and coming back with 2…or maybe 2+1 (hand carry)…. plus prob leeching some space in my hubz luggage…:P
HAve a great hols!!!
domncroxd says
Definitely for comfort! Jeans and flats/slippers, nice t-shirt.
Kat says
it depends where i’m going and the occassion. i dress for comfort but still ensure that i look presentable. for leisure and where i will walk a lot, i normally bring 1 pair of nike sneakers and another pair of dressier (but still comfortable) flats. i don’t get people who bring 5 pairs of shoes for 1 week of travelling. i think it helps to plan outfits before you go.
Jacqueline says
I usually go for a comfortable dress and birkis.
