Bobbi Brown Brights Eye Palette – Spring 2009

January 8, 2009 Paris B 23 Comments

When I first saw the picture of the limited edition Bobbi Brown Brights Eye palette, I was taken aback by a sense of deja vu. I knew I’d seen that multi-hued eyeshadow palette before… but where?

So, I thought and thought… And then, my memory returned.

Bobbi Brights Eye Palette

The Bobbi Brights Eye Palette reminds me of any multi-colored eyeshadow palette I have ever seen, from the no brand made in China ones I see on Ebay and at the pasar malam (night market) trying to pass themselves off as MAC, to the Markwins eyeshadow palettes at the pharmacies and drugstores, to the Coastal Scents 88 color eyeshadow palette. It even looks similar.

The Bobbi Brights eyeshadow palette has 35 matte colours and has a dimension of 6.3″ L x 4.25″ W open. Half that when closed and what you have is a relatively small compact palette with really tiny eyeshadow in it. I’m not fussed about the quantity, but the fact that they thought to fit 35 matte eyeshadows into one tiny palette is just mind boggling… unless it is premade that way of course 😉

The other thing that bugs me about the Brights Eye Palette is the fact that it is so brightly colored. Bobbi Brown is known for her neutral tones and even her colored shadows are toned down. It is something the brand is known for. To suddenly throw one brightly colored spanner into the works is puzzling. Change is good, but there is a reason why people go to Bobbi Brown and I don’t think this is really it.

I’m sorry Bobbi Brown fans, but I feel that the Bobbi Brights eye palette is a total miss. It looks like Bobbi Brown just popped into one of the generic cosmetics factories and picked up a generic color palette, slapped on the Bobbi Brown name and US$70 price tag on it and then sat back to watch it sell based on name alone. It almost feels like an experiment – “Lets see how far the Bobbi Brown name can take this generic looking palette” seems to be the project.

I’ll wait to see if it comes to Malaysia and when it does, I’ll try to check it out to see if my initial view is going to stand up after viewing the real thing. I do try to be fair, so if its a good looking palette I’ll say so then but not now.

What are your first thoughts about the Bobbi Brights Eye Palette?

Hi Akiki: Yes it looks very un-Bobbi Brown doesn’t it?

I completely agree! I saw it the other day at the BB counter, and that was my EXACT thought…that it was just like the Coastal Scents palette, but much more expensive, for a fraction of the colors! I can’t say that the color payoff was too good either…almost as though they were going for a “natural effect” with bright shades…

I feel it is not worth the price BB asking.

If it is generic, then she is cheating on her fans!

I think each color is probably the size of our 1 cent coin which is tiny. Only 9.8 gram for the whole palatte which translate to about 0.28gm of pigment in each color, probably enough for 3 applications?

Hey Ferarri: At least it’ll be interesting to see it when it comes in. I don’t think they are cheating anyone – its probably marketing hype 🙂

When I saw the palette, I was so sure it’s from Coastal Scents, if not only with your post title!

Oh no, that would be a miss for me too, you are right, I love Bobbi Brown because of its lovely / well thought packaging and I love them because of their colors. I mean, I’m ok for them to test on waters but do the packaging the right way! I cant’ wait to see them myself too!

my first thought when I saw this?
another CS 88 palette? what is BB thinking?
i like their neutrals very much better.
i think we have enough brights in the MU area, so I like BB being the neutral one 😛

Hi Plue: Yes I agree that Bobbi Brown does neutrals like no other and for that I’m thankful because even I need some neutrals in my life LOL…

What I’ve always loved about Bobbi’s palettes is that they represent a definitive look. One she’s put together for us, that while mostly neutral sometimes surprises. Like her pairing of cool eyes with slightly warmer lips and cheeks in the Mauve palette. This one… has no ‘look’. It’s a generic palette. You’re right Paris, she’s missed the boat on this one. Unless you’re a die-hard BB collector, I’d say give this one a miss.

Hi Kahani: Yep, it was the whole generic nature of this palette that got to me more than how colourful it is. I’d be interested to see it in real life though – it will be an education that’s for sure LOL

I agree, the palette reminds me of those generic ones you see in pharmacies. I’m wondering what BB was thinking when she launched this. Seems out of character to me. I’m curious to see how she recommends application of these colours vs. the other brands. Is there a “natural BB way” of using these?

Hey Monstro: Like I said, I wonder if its a test 😛 But then I’m cynical. I’ll quiz the Bobbi Brown girls once it gets here on the best way to use this palette.

Bobbi Brown; making a bright eyeshadow palette. The point shes trying to make is that with her palette it will be neutral enough for anyone who wants to wear bright colors but leaning towards her very natural look rather than MAC-glam. She didn’t miss any boat. The palette is gorgeous.

Hi L: Thanks for your thoughts. I guess with matte colours, its easier to go “natural” with lighter shades rather than all out pigmented glam look. Still, I’ll check it out in person when it gets here but the picture threw me for a loop.

The whole problem about this palette for me is that like what you and the others have said, it’s just too generic looking. If they had come out with a series of targeted color ranges, now that I might check out.

Hey Rinnah: I guess its why this palette came as such a surprise – BB has taken such a different turn from the norm.

IMO, this palette is beyond *meh*. it seems like a cheap trick, coming from BB. even if she was doing more color, which she is judging from the Xmas collection, this is not the way to go. really out of character. makes me wonder how much control over the brand she retains after selling it to estee lauder…

Hi Jooj: I don’t think anyone retains much control once they sell out – look at Stila!

You should really try these…they are not ‘BRIGHT’ like they appear to be. They actually go on quite sheer. And, Bobbi suggests wearing them independently, putting a light layer over your lid. The difference between this line and the others that look so similar is quality. Those other palettes use a lot of talc. Bobbi doesn’t do that. That’s why you only need a little bit. I think you should definitely try this out even if it’s just in the store…
