Review: Makeup: Maybelline XXL Mascara

March 30, 2007 Paris B 8 Comments

xxl

I’m a mascara novice. I never used mascara because, well, I never knew how! That is, until a friend told me to try Maybelline XXL mascara.

This mascara in a fat little tube comes with 2 ends – white colour primer and black colour mascara. The white colour goes on first, and is supposed to lengthen your lashes. The black colour volumizes it.

Does it work?

Well, I have short stick straight Asian lashes. I use the Shu Uemura curler to give my lashes a bit of a curl, then I apply the mascara. I’d say that it does lengthen my lashes and it does add some volume. I look like I have a fringe of lashes.

However, I find the brush too fat and the bristles too short. Its also rather clumpy so I get clumps in my lashes which when I try to brush out, messes up my lashes a tad. In that sense, its hard to use.

It comes in 2 formulas – Black body = non waterproof. Blue body = waterproof. I’ve only tried the non-waterproof version and it does smudge throughout the day. But only to be expected in our hot humid weather. Its easy to remove, which is good.

It retails at RM20+ at all pharmacies and sometimes goes on discount or special price. I’d say it works in a pinch, and since mascaras should be discarded after 3-5 months, its not too expensive. However, the brush puts me off, so I’m off to search for another one.

Pros: Lengthens and adds volume as promised

Cons: Brush head is too fat, clumpy formula

Would you buy cosmetics online?

March 29, 2007 Paris B 3 Comments

I was chatting to a friend yesterday and we were talking about buying makeup online. The question we posed was whether we would buy makeup/cosmetics online? Are Malaysians ready to shop online for toiletries and cosmetics?

We concurred that the answer is no.

I’ve bought makeup online before, either from online stores or through friends overseas. The problem is not in the buying of the makeup online. Its the problem of not being able to see and touch the actual product before buying it.

If you are sensitive to fragrance, you can’t tell if the smell of the item will bug you just by looking at it online. You can’t tell how the texture is. You can’t tell what it looks like on your skin or whether its suitable for you. You just have to cross your fingers and hope for the best.

I do my homework thoroughly before I buy anything online. I read reviews by users and try to get a feel of the product before I buy. Yet, I’ve ended up with duds and sometimes, expensive duds.

I believe many Malaysians feel the same way. We are not a big country and almost everything is available to everyone at some point. We are never more than 9 hours max away from any city so shopping online just seems so pointless.

So, whilst I will still continue buying cometics online, I will try to stick to only getting them online if they are cheaper or if I’m really dying to try a particular brand/colour. Else, nothing beats getting a feel of the product before handing over your hard-earned cash.

What do you think? Are you prepared to buy makeup and cosmetics online, sight unseen?

TIP: Mist your face after powder foundation

March 29, 2007 Paris B 3 Comments

After applying your powder foundation or loose powder, do you find that your skin looks powdery? I sometimes do and wanted to get rid of that made up look.

Someone gave me a tip, which is to spritz a fine mist of water over your face after doing your foundation, especially powder foundation. Don’t touch it until it dries and it will set your powder foundation and make your makeup last all day.

I also remembered when I was in Hong Kong and my sister went for a Shu Uemura makeover. The makeup artist also misted her face after applying her powder foundation. So I guess its a trick makeup artists use, that we can pick up for everyday.

I tried it and it works a treat! I use Shu Uemura’s Deep Sea water because I bought a small little bottle cheap from Hong Kong. I forgot about it till now.

You can use Evian facial mist, which I might take a look at once my Shu Uemura water finishes.

But you can just use any water in a spray bottle and lightly mist your face. I’m amazed at how long my makeup can last, just by doing this little step. Try it and see for yourself.

In fact, I have since tried the Evian face mist and I dislike it. It literally feels just like spritzing water on skin and that is much cheaper! I much prefer using other brands of thermal water sprays of which I count Vichy as one of my favourites. Other people like Avene for their sensitive skin as well as Uriage, all easily available from local pharmacies (except Vichy which is no longer sold in Malaysia)

MO Outlet for off season bargains

March 28, 2007 Paris B 12 Comments

MO-outlet

No, I’m not being paid to advertise this. I wish they would. I have a lot of stuff I know I can pick out of their store 😛 The MO Outlet is an off shoot of the Melium Group that brings in luxury brands like Cole Haan, Hugo Boss, Aigner amongst others. They also own Dome cafe, as an aside.

Anyway, have you wondered what they do with the off season or past season goods? Well, that’s where the MO Outlet comes in. These off season clothes, shoes, handbags and accessories are sold at discounted prices at the MO Outlet, which is at the Melium offices headquarters in Shamelin Perkasa, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. It takes some finding, that I must say.

Even at discounted prices, the prices are still high. I once saw a pair of lovely Cole Haan wedges in my size, but had to pass on them, for they still cost RM550 after a hefty 40% discount. I just couldn’t justify buying them. However, if you are prepared to spend the money, then this place is a great place to get deals on branded items.

I’ve personally picked up 2 Cole Haan handbags here that I’d never buy otherwise, because they were going for close to 60% off. A friend who was with me snagged a pair of really nice Cole Haan men’s leather shoes at only RM250! It was originally something like RM600 or RM700. You never get deals like this in the stores!

They run events too, usually on a monthly basis, at the event hall on the ground floor. Depending on the theme of the moment, it could be extra discounts on women’s or men’s goods or just generally on leather goods or specific brands. If you are feeling flush and want to get luxury goods for less, this is a good place to hit.

The MO Outlet is no longer as Shamelin Perkasa, Cheras and are now at The Trillium, Sungai Besi. I have not been to the new store and have no idea where it is!

It’s an unusual Chinese New Year this year. It’s the first time since I left home that I did not make an early morning drive home for CNY for the reunion dinner (I always do so to beat traffic). It’s the first time I’m spending CNY in KL. It’s the first time my hair is looking such a mess for CNY 😂
Regardless, we do this not for ourselves but for others so we can have more joyful CNY celebrations to come.
