Review: Makeup: Maybelline XXL Mascara

March 30, 2007 Paris B 8 Comments

xxl

I’m a mascara novice. I never used mascara because, well, I never knew how! That is, until a friend told me to try Maybelline XXL mascara.

This mascara in a fat little tube comes with 2 ends – white colour primer and black colour mascara. The white colour goes on first, and is supposed to lengthen your lashes. The black colour volumizes it.

Does it work?

Well, I have short stick straight Asian lashes. I use the Shu Uemura curler to give my lashes a bit of a curl, then I apply the mascara. I’d say that it does lengthen my lashes and it does add some volume. I look like I have a fringe of lashes.

However, I find the brush too fat and the bristles too short. Its also rather clumpy so I get clumps in my lashes which when I try to brush out, messes up my lashes a tad. In that sense, its hard to use.

It comes in 2 formulas – Black body = non waterproof. Blue body = waterproof. I’ve only tried the non-waterproof version and it does smudge throughout the day. But only to be expected in our hot humid weather. Its easy to remove, which is good.

It retails at RM20+ at all pharmacies and sometimes goes on discount or special price. I’d say it works in a pinch, and since mascaras should be discarded after 3-5 months, its not too expensive. However, the brush puts me off, so I’m off to search for another one.

Pros: Lengthens and adds volume as promised

Cons: Brush head is too fat, clumpy formula

Personally, I like the brush from Maybelline’s “Lash Discovery”…small and compact. I just got one of the XXL mascaras, haven’t had the chance to try it yet though. The only problem I’ve found with waterproof mascaras is that either they actually DO smudge, or they’re incessantly difficult to remove without either pulling off half your eyelashes or rubbing off your eyelids…any suggestions?

Beetrice: I’m going to talk about Lash Discover next! hehe… mind reader you! I found that removing WP mascara is best with cleansing oils. I have too few lashes to let too many fall out

i think the jp and taiwan trend now are using mascara whereby the the brush is very small and slim….it glide thru the lashes effortly…however, i just saw it on the tv…do not know the brand of it:(

i’ve tried lancome and dior…still doesn’t do a good job on my short asian lashes..keke

I have this mascara too and I have to say that I quite like it. I don’t get the clumping mess and such. I’m asian too but I don’t have really short lashes so I can’t say that I notice the lengthening part that much, but I like the volume it gives me. One thing about it though is that it WILL give you slight panda eyes that can be fixed with some kleenex, but it is still annoying. As for staying power, it’s pretty good for me, keeps my lashes up for as long as my lancome one.
