A Bad encounter at MAC Cosmetics

Oct 6, 2007

I don’t normally do this, but this comment left by a reader yesterday on my previous article on why MAC Cosmetics is not for me, struck a chord in me.

Here is what Leia wrote:

This evening (Oct 5 2007) I visited the latest M.A.C. outlet in Kuala Lumpur. This is the new mall in Kuala Lumpur, Pavilion. I was there around 6.30 -7.00 pm. I was served by a sales girl. I told her I was looking for a waterproof eye shadow or eye liner. She showed me some colors. She tested a few colors on my wrist and then I asked her if I could try on my eyes. She said yes and I chose blue cream eye shadow. She handed over the cream and a brush but she walked away. I was puzzled and waited for her return. After few minutes, she came back and we looked at each other. So I asked her what to do with the cream and a brush that I was holding. She said I am supposed to put on myself. I told her I had not used cream eye shadow and asked her to help me. So she put on one eye for me. After looking at the mirror, I did not like the color on me so I told her the same. She gave me some remover to clean one eye that I tried the color. After that, I said I could not go around the mall with one eye bare and the other eye colored (my original make up was on). So she said I could use one of MAC color to put on the side that did not have any make up. Then I said I would have different color on my eyes so I asked if she could find the nearest match to the color that I had on my eyes. She said she could find and asked me to look for the color myself. As I could not find any color that is almost like the color that I had, so I asked her if she could help to put on (eye shadow) the side that had no make up as well as covering over the existing make up on the other eye. She said that would cost me RM80.00. I was jaw dropped. I asked to confirm and she replied the same. Then she said I could pick one base color and do it myself. I am totally lost. I had no choice but picked one color and put on myself. Guess I was upset over this and putting on the color badly. She then offered to help and she did but, that was it. I left the place. The reason I walked into the shop because I was told about the product. Just that now thing has gone the wrong way and I was humiliated. What have I done to deserve this

This is part of the reason why I do not patronize MAC Cosmetics any longer, products notwithstanding. Bar a couple of helpful staff, the majority suck - I’m sorry to say. My own encounters have been with unhelpful and patronizing staff, but never one as rude as in Leia’s encounter above or they would have definitely heard from me!

I have written to Leia to advise her to please please take this up with the company - no, not M.A.C itself but the company that brings them in who in turn, hire the staff here. There is no place for rude sales people in a service industry and M.A.C Cosmetics needs to understand that.

Go one up. Submit it to the HQ of MAC, wherever they might be- Canada/US, I can’t be sure. I was bombarded with junk mail from Clarins once. Despite numerous pleas for them to stop, they ignored me. I threatened to go all the way to their HQ in France and demand to know how my email address landed in their database and a harried PR personnel contacted me with apologies. Sorry to say, that’s how things are done here in M’sia.

PB says: That is a good idea. From my personal experience however, taking it up with the HQ here is quite sufficient for the interim. But a lot depends on the brand manager and how she handles the situation. If its not satisfactory then take it up another step.

  2. sesame October 6, 2007 3:35 pm

Actually one of the reasons I don’t use much of MAC is because of this. I don’t like the staff’s attitude. Rather snobbish I would say. I only get what I want from there and I’m out. And come to think of it, many of the other brands are the same.

It’s kind of a delicate balance these service staff have to strike. The other day I was at YSL and the SA was overly friendly. She kept calling me sister and I felt so uncomfortable.

PB says: This complaint seems to be a universal one pertaining to MAC. But I agree that overly friendly staff are equally creepy. SAs should learn that the customers aren’t their buddies but neither are they their subjects.

  3. Tine October 6, 2007 5:13 pm

Good Lord, that sounds awful. Which exactly why I don’t go to MAC either. They have about the worst staff around (I’ve got a gripe about Sasa too, but will post one on that in a bit).

I’d do as Paris say AND do one up to the MAC HQ. We are consumers; we do not deserve to be treated like that.

PB says: Hear! Hear! Tine. And I’m glad you wrote about this too!

  4. Cherzleen October 6, 2007 8:06 pm

I totally agree. I have stopped going to Mac too. Anyway, you I suggest Leia to contact Suria Meriang Sdn Bhd and complain to the MAC brand manager here in Malaysia.

PB says: Yep, I gave her the contact number and address. I hope she takes it up!

  5. S-Kay October 6, 2007 10:26 pm

MAC SAs are total snobs. Can’t stand them. Like I’ve mentioned before, the moment you walk in..they’ll start screening through you to determine whether you’re worth their service efforts.

The only time when I like MAC SAs are during the warehouse sales (awesome SAs there) and the one in Gurney Plaza.

You guys might as well just go to 16th Floor at Menara Tan&Tan. MAC, Estee Lauder and all that are under that company. I saw a few MAC SAs going there before. Maybe something can be done since the SAs are normally hired there.

PB says: I heard they have moved offices to the Midvalley area but I might be mistaken. Either way, since MAC is brought in by Suria Meriang SB, I told Leia to contact them about her encounter

  6. WY October 6, 2007 11:18 pm

Absolutely agree with you - service sucks big time at MAC, especially the Suria KLCC outlet. They need to buck up! Gotta learn from other brands like Estee Lauder and heaps of others who have the time and patience to assist customers.

PB says: Welcome! I can’t believe how many people are having awful experiences with MAC!

  7. SM October 7, 2007 12:27 am

I had a bad encounter at MAC (MidValley) too! When I wanted to try MAC cosmetics, as I walked into the shop, one guy greet me. Too excited about their products, I have gone straight to the makeup bar without notice him. When I refer back to him since he is the one who greet me first, he is showing me some LOOK, “Just-now-I-serve-u, u-don’t-bother, now-I-don’t careeee”.
Oh Well, I gave him back the same LOOK??
When I asked him about the appointment for a makeover for the coming Sat, he told me that u have to book at least 3 days (without looking at the appointment book), and it’s fully booked by now!!!!
Asked him about the other branch’s contact no, very reluctant to give! I tried myself for the makeover in MAC at Lot 10, the girl press my eyelashes so painful, and it was an awful makeover ever! This is where I stop using MAC!

PB says: I hope MAC is reading this and taking notes! They are losing so many potential customers. But never mind, there are better brands out there - trust me on this one! :) Btw, I had an awful makeover with MAC once too. They gave me foundation that was 2 shades too dark and drew on black brows that scared me. Needless to say, never again!

  8. SM October 7, 2007 12:40 am

Yeah, never again! The previous makeover was so awful! Till I took down the makeup and doing it all over again before the dinner. I really don’t want to look like a Fool!

PB says: And I did the same :)

  9. cass October 7, 2007 8:42 am

    :(

they recommended me the wrong concealer, it was orange and i ended up looking like a clown with orange eyebags :(

PB says: Oh my… that must have been traumatizing.

  10. beetrice October 7, 2007 6:15 pm

Sadly, it seems that the CHEAPER (well, comparatively!) cosmetic counters have better service than the irritating high end ones.

Maybe it would be a nice touch (albeit extremely sarcastic) to remind the snotty ones that THEY’RE the ones that need to earn a living on your business - so they’d BETTER BE NICE!! *rofl*

PB says: You hit the nail right on the head. WE give them the business or have they forgotten?

  11. prettybeautiful October 8, 2007 10:37 pm

I dont want to step in there again ever since they didnt give me a damn when i walked in with shorts…

PB says: Well you’re not missing anything.

  12. dramaqueen October 9, 2007 2:13 am

Wow..so many traumatising story about M.A.C MUA, Cant believe it!!

I once step in MAC Mid Valley back in 2005 the MUA that i had experienced with.. shes the only tan malay looks like mix african american girl that helps me well… got my foundation all good!!

Then I was in M.A.C Sogo last year.. the same girl and the team was warm.. I am not whole loads of MAC fans.. some of my frieds isnt lucky enough to get the right MUA.. the snobs and stuck up attitude still scares them.. sad I hope theres more warm MUA like her around..

Hope the management will do something abt this.

    -dramaqueen-

PB says: I suppose you were lucky with MAC. I must admit I have encountered one or two well mannered MUAs but the majority are horrendous. I hope someone from MAC is reading all of this!

  13. jenny October 9, 2007 2:58 pm

i frequent mac in lot 10 isetan. the salesperson there are very friendly and helpful. and i don’t look like a million bucks. should give that a try. the only problem is they have very limited stock to most of their stuff. they’ll help u put on the cosmetic u wanna try on u without any complains.

PB says: Thanks for the tip. I no longer frequent MAC but someone may find this useful.

  14. emily ting October 14, 2007 4:17 pm

woo… i would just give her my furious look and use tissue to wipe off my other side of eyeshadow and walk away throwing the tissue on the floor… she’s so arrogant… dam…

thats y i dun buy mac cosmetics.. coz they’ll give you those look which like looking down at you wont buy the products. i went in like 2wice only since i started buying make up. i’ll always go back to nice SA coz they’re nice..

i’ve attempt before once, when i wanted to buy mac eyeliner for my friend, i went there with my bf, i walked into midvalley’s mac counter by myself first, then there’s a guy came and approach me.. then when my bf came in behind me.. he then moved away and ignore me testing all the eyeliners there…

that was really bad… cant i bring my bf along to buy cosmetics??

PB says: Aww… another bad encounter… MAC really should be reading this…

  15. rani October 15, 2007 12:56 am

here also in India at Mumbai i went to Mac but no response.. waited , waited and finally went away to sheisido. where i was treated very well.

PB says: In India even?! *shakes head* Welcome btw :)

  16. sheen November 18, 2007 1:54 am

Leia.. im really sorry u have to go thru this but my advice is that when you want to try on cosmetics, ALWAYS makes sure that you’re not wearing anything. cosmetics i mean. simply because.. im sure you know that over the counter sales person is never going to put eyeshadow on BOTH of your eyes and in order for you to avoid any embarassment for going shopping around the mall with one eye bare and another smokey eye.

so now you know, to avoid any embarassment, thats the way to go.

  17. June November 27, 2007 12:31 pm

i was surprised to read so many bad remarks about MAC SAs. i started off with no knowledge on make up at all till i walked into MAC at KLCC somewhere in june 2007. d SA was great!spent like an hour with me teaching me how to do my eyes, face, brows , lips, everything.

from then on, i bought all my cosmetics from MAC and i have been to all their counters in KL. i must say i have never met a rude or unhelpful SA.they r all fabulous to me.

i guess i was one of d lucky ones. or maybe it’s because i look rather intimidating and scary?? hahaha! cheers!

  18. akikiki November 28, 2007 11:00 pm

    just read this post,
can i re-post this in my blog??
i wanna show to my friends that :
branded is not equals to good service!!!
    another proof!!!

    thanks a lot

  19. ash January 23, 2008 3:33 pm

been to MAC (sogo) counters a few times, some SAs were ok - quite helpful, but some were really clueless about MAC products even..when asked to reccommend a suitable lipgloss colour she just lined up the new ones altho any sane person would know, nobody is gonna wear a glittery neon orange colour to the office (!). hopeless..

PB says: Pity about their service isn’t it?

  20. veronica January 26, 2008 1:18 pm

so you find the majority of mac staff to be rude and unhelpful? REALLY? you must have gone to a lot of counters. because mac is quite large and has a lot of staff.

i dont think it’s fair to group all mac artists and say they are SNOBS or presume we all dont know what were doing because youve had bad experiences somewhere. (i say we because i am a mac artist)

there are times when we will walk away from our customers when its busy while they continue to look. but lack of communication on both ends can cause confusion like the girl who had that experience. if she wanted her to do her eyes she should have just spoke up and say “can YOU apply the shadow on me” not “can i try this on” because that implies she wants to do it on herself.

it was wrong of the artist to imply that she had to spend money to get shadow applied because that is completely false… that i will attest to. but i think that experience was so awkward because of the lack of communication.

and you have to understand, we get defensive customers all the time that have their guard up because they think WERE ALL BITCHES. were not all snobs and actually we are excellently trained in all areas of our products and whats in them and why they are beneficial.

im sorry to hear some of you turned away from our brand because its an awesome brand that stands for so much. we are all ages all races and all sexes. we provide and excellent generous recycling program. and we have raised over 100 million dollars for the mac aids fund from viva glam lip products. on top of that we dont test on animals nor use and by products in our makeup.

PB says: Thanks for giving your point of view. I’m not sure where you are, but the problem is that we don’t have that many MAC counters here and I’ve been to all and possibly bar one, haven’t received good service or to be more precise receive snobby service from the rest of the counters. I’ve read of similar experiences at other counters in other parts of the world. Its not a generalization, but the case is very strong against the SAs. Then again, there are still MAC fans so I guess it doesn’t hurt them.

  21. michelle January 27, 2008 5:07 pm

My 2 girlfriends and I had the same experience as Leia, in fact the same M.A.C outlet in Pavillion. I went up to them asking for the right eye shadow color for my droopy eyes. The SA only tried out one and only one color (if it’s so easy to make my eye looks bigger, I would have done it myself) on one of my eye and stopped there. Lucky me as I brought my eye shadow along, else I would walking around with an eye bare and another eye colored.I planned to spend a fortune there to prep myself for my company grand dinner. I end up buying Shu Uemura. It’s their loss.

PB says: I fully concur with you and it looks like the majority agrees that MAC SAs leave much to be desired in the service department

  22. shino February 12, 2008 10:40 am

erm..i must said that i am really lucky or…i am just very easy go lucky type of person. I knew that a lot ppl been complaining with MAC. but so far i haven’t meet one. or i did met a few. but i just opt not to service by them, i am not how malaysia MAC work, but in taiwan, each of the MUA had sales target to meet. so if you piss me off, i turn to another. I like Hing, or Hee? not very sure her name, in Midvalley, she is very friendly girl and always smile at customer and offer to help or stay a side let you choose your own color. I really recommend her if you are first time to MAC. (PS. i am dont’ look million buck nor gorgoeus at all, plus i am obesity, so it really take me a lot of couriage to go in MAC., becos of low self-esteem, and i am really lucky i guess)

  23. mim February 17, 2008 3:02 am

i just read leia comments! woow! i had the same experienced from the same outlet too. PAVILION KL. on 19th january 2008, i went there. i am planning to get pigments and makeup brush. The moment i walked into the store, i saw 3 ladies there.quite nice looking, all of em , i shall say…but hey! am not there to c u guys modelling or do catwalk. what i got is nothing than dissapointment. i just dun understand, who is buying ? who is the customer? most importantly who is doing the business and who give em opportunity to do business and make money if its not US,…CUSTOMER..CONSUMER OF THE PRODUCTS? NO 1. THEY DIDNT GREET ME THOUGH THEY NOTICED AM THERE. (2) THEY COMPLETELY IGNORED ME AS IF AM NOT THERE. NO ASSISTANCE (3) I APPROACHED ONE OF EM, ASKING BOUT THE PIGMENTS, I KNW SHE WAS TALKING TO ONE CUSTOMER, BUT HEY, SHE IS THE CLOSEST TO ME, AND THE OTHER 2 STAFF COMPLETELY IN THEIR OWN WORLD, SO AS A CUSTOMER, I HAVE THE RIGHT TO ASK IF I NEED ASSISTANCE..BUT YET, SHE GAVE ME THE PIGFACE WHICH IS UGLY AND FURIOUS. AND ANSWERED MY QUESTION SHOWING THAT SHE IS PISSED! OK! FINE! IT DOES NOT STOP THERE. I WAS LOOKING FOR THE BRUSHES. THE BRUSHES IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE PAYMENT COUNTER, WHERE THE OTHER 2 LADIES AT, STANDING CHIT CHATTING HAPPILY. THEY GAVE ME THAT LOOK, THAT I AM NOT WELCOME! LIKE AM SUCH A NUISANCE…! AGAIN…STILL. I DIDNT GIVE UP. ASKED ONE OF EM, ABOUT THE HOLIDAY SETS. FOR THE EYE BRUSHES. THEY STILL HAVE THE STOCKS WHILE OTHER BRANCH DUN HAVE IT ANYMORE. TELL ME, EVEN IF U HAVE ONE MILLION DOLLAR IN UR POCKET, WITH THE SA THAT IS NOT FRNDLY AND WITH BITTER FACE, WILL U AS A CUSTOMER BE BOTHER TO BUY? HELL NO! NOT ME…SORRY DOESNT WORK 4 ME. DOESNT MATTER HOW MUCH I LOVE THE PRODUCTS OR BRANDS. WE ALWAYS HAVE A CHOICE AS A CUSTOMER..THERE IS ALWAYS ALTERNATIVES.

I DID SENT MAIL TO MAC. BUT NO RESPOND. I DIDNT KNOW THE COMPANY NAME THAT BRING EM HERE, AND WHRE TO COMPLAINT HERE IN MALAYSIA. SO THATS WHY I WENT TO THE WEBSITE AND SENT MAIL. I HAD ENUFF WITH EM… ADIOS PARA SIEMPRE MAC.

  24. mim February 17, 2008 3:26 am

veronica, i hope u have read my comments b4. i know MAC is a great product and one of the reason i used to buy it bcos of the recycling programme. and i support cruelty free. But am a consumer. i always have a choice. i was planning to spent a fortune on MAC makeup on that particular day, but hey..look what i have got from em? NO GREET, NO SMILE, BITTERFACE,NOT FREIDNLY, NOT WILLING TO HELP? why? simply bcos i dun look fashionable or too simple on that particular day? or i dun look like million dollar babe? or simply cos i dun wear any makeup shows that am not a makeup person…some1 who knows nothing bout makeup? can u answer that for me? i was the one who look and sounds so keen about the products, and it was 3 ladies there. NONE OF THEM SERVE ME. IT ONLY GOES THIS WAY…’ U ASK ME..I ANSWER..OTHERWISE I WONT BE BOTHER’ !! OK…IF THAT SO…I CHOW LA ! OH WELL..GOOD DAY FOR ME, I END UP BUYING FOREVER21 DRESSES AND KAREN MILLER DRESS INSTEAD OF MAC!

one more thing, nvr ever judge a person by the appearance. i dunno which cosmetology school u went to, but just bare with some of the consumers that might just know more than u do with deep pocket! btw, one of the SA there really caught me&my bf attention, with her clown look makeup. ;-)

  25. amanda February 17, 2008 3:11 pm

Well i dont know where ya’ll are from but here in the US every single MAC counter I have been to they are nothing but nice. They will go to all lengths to help me understand the product or ensure that I have what I need. They are kind and talented make-up artist! Sorry you had a few bad seeds but I can assure you they are not all like that!

  26. amanda February 17, 2008 3:15 pm

By the way the dont go to cosmotolgy school and the way they do their make up is sometimes a bit extreme but you have to understand that it is a “High Fashion” brand and if you look on the high fashion run ways you always see crazy make-up. MAC is known for there vibrant colors and great make-up, they are just different and thats why they make millions more every year then all the other labels combind. PLUS they help certain AIDS funds and they RECYLCLE! all very good things for the world!

  27. mim February 17, 2008 5:01 pm

oh lucky amanda. it doesnt work here in malaysia. yeah, no doubt bout the great MAC makeup. oh well, i love fashion and paintings. enjoy seeing all the extreme makeup on runways. only problems is that the SA in most of the mac counter here always leave somethin for us to say. overall, the products is GREAT. maybe i should just fly to US just to get mac with good service and friendly staff there. :-)

  28. akiki February 17, 2008 11:23 pm

if i’m not mistaken, MAC is under Estee Lauder…

  29. Fie February 21, 2008 9:57 am

I didn’t really stop from going to MAC because of the bad service…but I do have preference to WHICH outlet to go to and who to find when I’m there. I’ve had bad experiences before there, the MAs are so snobby sometimes it really pisses me off that I know more about their products then they do. I wish they would hire ppl who are passionate about the brand as well, here they hire you only if you have a cert or diploma from a beauty school or whatever. In the US, people get hired because of their skill and their interest for the brand. Blah. So unfair.

But well, I recommend going to the KLCC one if you ever wanna try to buy MAC again. Find Yean or Reyo. They’re very nice. :) Or if you’re in Midvalley, find Harita but I don’t like the staff for this outley…so I lean towards KLCC more.

  30. neutral February 27, 2008 2:42 pm

I’m not a fan of M.A.C but I would like to share my view here. If I want to buy cosmetic on the day, I’ll wear very liltle makeup such as moisturizer and loose powder. This will actually benefit myself to buy a correct shade of foundation, get the true color of lipstick, coverage of concealer…etc. But there also people who were buy cosmetic being seized by whim or other situation (after working…etc). So, leia’s case might happen. As a SA, they should try and do their best to serve their customer. Some company will provides refund or money back just for their good reputation. It’s unfair to charge $ in leia case, the SA could propose to remove eyeshadow of both eye and let leia to choose a color she like to wear. In emily case, I don’t know what’s in the male SA mind, but some man are jealousy and don’t like other man to approach their gf/wife (even SA). In mim’s case, I’m curious does M.A.C give incentives to their SA? If they did, why those SA not bother to serve mim since everyone is potential buyer. I have learn that I need to give clear instruction to SA just like If I don’t want the SA to follow me, I have to tell them. If I want something, make a request.
Customer have high expectation espcially if the product is expensive or the company is reputable, retailer has reponsibility to make their customer leave their store satisfactory. Of course, if someone is humiliating, then just shun away. I would never go back with unpleasant experience.

  31. Emyli March 4, 2008 5:40 am

I totally agree with this. I find this similar no matter what country it is. In London, it is exactly the same. The staff are stuck-up, and so full of themselves it’s ridiculous. As soon as you walk in into a MAC store, you have like five members of staff look at you up and down- not even at your face, with a fake “Hiyaaaa darlin’” Ok, not all MAC staff are like that, but they have to agree that the majority of the staff that they hire seriously need re-considering.. and possibly some proper CUSTOMER SERVICE TRAINING!

  32. Paris Beaverbanks March 4, 2008 10:09 am

Emyli: So its an attitude that transcends borders eh? Pity it was the bad attitude that did. Thanks for your comment

  33. aly March 6, 2008 1:36 pm

the same happens at MAC counters at Dubai - they ignore you (ofcourse this is done after they scan you to see if you’re worth their time and effort - Like they would know!!!)

  34. rin March 17, 2008 2:03 am

i’ve been using MAC for quite sometimes now and i normally go to lot10 outlet .. but the stock is rather limited there…so i try the midvalley outlet..gosh the SA there is such a snob.. and i end buying lotsa items from Bobbi Brown (2 doors away from them)..

  35. tammy March 17, 2008 10:51 pm

I wonder always wonder what options we have after being recommended the wrong type of product?

My friend S, went to MAC MidValley early last year and was recommended a foundation powder to use. When she got back home n used it the following day, it was the wrong shade. She went back to MV to ask if they could change it, but they refused to do anything about it. She has since “abandon” Mac and move on. She regretted not knowing much about cosmetics and the price she had to pay for the foundation powder which is rotting in her drawer.

Is it our fault if we’re clueless about make up and forced to accept it after paying the price?

  36. sara March 24, 2008 8:24 am

i would have to disagree…i’ve been to M.A.C countless times and they have been some of the nicest people…they aplied my makeup for me they cleaned it off and they even joked around a little

  37. rei March 29, 2008 12:57 am

    whoaa! seriously?
im from hk. landed on ur blog while i was looking through other beauty blogs .
but anyway, back to the topic.
the SAs at M.A.C in hk dont have friendly attitudes as well ==” probably coz im not that old they tend to ignore me whenever i check out the counters. they arent exactly ‘rude’, but close to it. well at least they answer me when i ask abt the products. overall the attitude isnt so friendly ._______.”!
somebody has to do something abt this. this is totally unacceptable ==”

  38. Lyn April 8, 2008 1:01 am

I recently visitied MAC outlet in MV. The chinese gal there was rather helpful and friendly. She tried few shades of foundation and even helped me to wipe it off.. When all set, she added some blusher and even lined my eye lids. So, i would not say all SAs are snobs. There are nice ones as well. It is unfair to generalise due to lousy service of one or two staffs.

  39. Siew Ming April 12, 2008 8:59 pm

Last time i went to lot ten M.A.C,the chinese girl is so bad,but afterthat i went again the evening, but luckily the malay girl is so nice

  40. Jackee April 13, 2008 2:08 pm

I love MAC products, but I find myself buying the products online as opposed to going to a counter…as least most of the time. There are two counters that I normally go to and the staff is pretty friendly (Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, MI - Macy’s and Nordstrom. There is 1 counter (Macy’s at Somerset Mall in Troy, MI) that I do not care for at all. I’ve been to it twice and both times, I thought the MA’s were pretty snobby! I was just there last night and was not greeted/acknowledged. I was ready to spend some $$$ there, but instead I just got one item…which I felt I was bothering the MA when I asked for it…Oh well. Thank god for online shopping.

  41. Joyce April 17, 2008 10:29 am

OMG, I’m so glad I stumbled across this post! I thought I was being paranoid for feeling like MAC salespeople were obnoxious.

I agree with most of the comments here, that they evaluate you based on how you’re dressed and made up.

Here in Singapore, I frequent the one at Raffles City (okay service, but can be improved) and the one at Scotts. It was the one at Scotts that gave me a bad impression.

There is a stark stark difference between MAC and Bobbi Brown. You feel like a commoner when you go to MAC, but a queen at Bobbi.

They need to be retrained, seriously.

  42. jo April 18, 2008 6:43 pm

I would have to agree and disagree with all of you here. In my opinion MAC customer service is not up to the standard here in Malaysia. I moved back home from the US last year and has been going to practically all MAC stores/counters in Klang Valley and I have to say it’s very different from what I have experienced in the US.

I have a MAC fan/addict for past three years and was a frequent visitor to my nearest MAC counter back in the US and the staff there were very friendly (except maybe, 1 or two, because there’s bound to be a bad person in a nice group of people). I have also been to many MAC counters in New York and Chicago many many times and although it was obvious I was only a poor college student (I wore non-branded clothes), they staff treated me and others very well, although they were a lot of other customers there. If they’re busy, they’d sorry and they’d be with you in a moment. They also never expect that you want to put the make up on your own, unless you specifically say, I want to borrow a brush to try this eyeshadow/lipstick/etc.

When I came back here I noticed, many staff at MAC stores here tend to discriminate the patrons, according to the impression the customers make whether they appear to have a lot of money/knowledge in MAC products. If you walk there alone, without looking like you’ve got money or the first clue about MAC products, a lot of them won’t treat you with the standard of service they should be giving. Yes, a large number of MAC staff in Malaysia are pretty snobbish if compared with the US. Enough said.

Nevertheless, I know some MAC make up artists/SAs (aren’t they all supposed to be make up artists?) in KL who are really nice. There’s this pretty guy in KLCC MAC store, named Apple who’s really nice. The lady MA with the spiky hair in KLCC is also very nice. There’s this pretty male MA in Pavilion who is very very patient and nice with the customers. I’d suggest you look for these MAs if going to MAC store in KLCC or Pavilion.

I’m from Chile, and MAC is considered one of the best MU brands, a very expensive one, and for what i’ve seen, the bad treatment to customers is an everyday/everywhere issue. In Santiago, MAC is distribuited officialy by Falabella (department store) and a MAC Store in a shopping plaza, and the SA are very unpleasent, snob people.

I buy makeup every week, i like it, i collect it, i like to change my looks very often and i go for department store brands and drugstore brands too. I always go very simply dressed, no makeup (so i can test every product in the proper way) but that does not mean that i’m homeless or i’m shoplifting, cause in the MAC stores all i get when i look like that is a suspicious look and a bad tratment. Besides, all the MUAs look like they’re so bored with you!! I like to make questions about the product i’m willing to but so i can get the most of it, and this MAC snobs look at you like “Oh God kill me now or make her shut the hell up”…

So, i prefer to buy Clinique, Guerlain or even Loreal or Maybelline… i always get pampered and well attended when it comes to this brands.

It’s odd how all the branches have that same snooty, ignore the customer or size them up MA/SA. If you’re selling something shouldn’t you at least treat yourc customers better? I’ve been to probably all the branches they have in KL and get the same treatment all the time - and I actually dress up so it couldn’t be that. It’s just their attitude or worse, their training!

The only good experience I’ve had has been in the MV outlet and Sunway Pyramid but both times started off being ignored until I either approached someone or spent a long enough time at the counter looking through things. Most of them were either staring off into space or making themselves busy with their head right into the desk.

Its all about attitude. Do u realize dat most sales people ( be it hotel staff or cosmectic counters)in Malaysia are just not happy doing their job, its like they are forced to do it. They lack the knowledge that they are to ’serve’. If so, just change jobs… do a cubicle kind, where u dont hv to meet anyone!
I use mac too in JB. The girl, Grace is a real darling.
I think u shd get the names of these rude staff and write a complain citing their names. Make it known to them that u r taking their names down.
    Its disgusting , i know!

Hey… I love MAC but I have to agree with you guys on the TERRIBLE service. I haven’t exactly bought any products from the MAC counters but I have loads of limited edition MAC products because I have a relative working at the MAC office. Although I don’t purchase MAC products, I still like to browse around the MAC counters. Everytime I enter the shop, I get weird looks from the SAs (I don’t have to say much, I’m sure most people reading this post knows what I mean).

So one day I decided to give MAC Sunway a try, but as usual, crappy SAs. I asked them something, the replied in less than 5 words and that was the end of my GLORIOUS encounter with the SA. Finding a SA that’s nice and helpful is like finding a needle in a huge sack of makeup. Obviously I walked out.

Few hours later, I walked past MAC again and I saw a friend of mine just leaving MAC (she spent RM500 at one go, SIAO!) so we started chatting about MAC right outside of the shop. The SAs still gave me a weird look as in “she’s not pretty/well dressed/hot/rich looking enough to even talk about MAC so why is she talking to this totally rich customer here”. This friend of mine really looks up to my knowledge about MAC so she consulted me on her purchases. I poured out my knowledge about MAC and took out loads of my limited edition products as examples. (Sorry la… I wanted to wipe that ugly look off all the SAs. I it may have seemed bitchy but the SAs were worse. I just need the satisfaction to be able to mentally kick their butts. =P) When the SAs saw my collection they had this defeated and shocked look. They’ve just lost a potential customer. HAH!!

Seriously, people should complain about the MAC SAs everytime they were treated badly. Maybe we should make it a habit on complaining about the SAs. =P I should try talking to my relative about the annoying SAs. Something really needs be done about them or one day they’ll end up getting punched.

I live in the UK , and I go to one particular MAC store. The SA are okay, but they could have more make up artists around, since about 3 people do one person’s make up at one time, limiting other people wanting some service. But when they do assist you they are extremely nice. I’ve only been twice and i’ve bought around £120 worth of MAC products, which is around 779 Ringit!! They are happy to put the products on you: If you think a shade is too light, they take it off quickly and apply the next shade up, they are really nice. They complimented my skin saying it was ”amazing” and ”this would really work for you” or ”is there anything else you wanted”. Basically normal things you SHOULD hear from a make up counter.
My mother is from KL in Malaysia and i am planning to go with her in the Summer 2008. I’m planning to go to Pavillion a) its just opened so i’m excited about that and b)I want to see how snobbish these SA are in these MAC stores! If they really are this rude, I would tell them straight up that they are not doing a good job and give them the deuces!

BTW, to anyone that has been treated nicely in the KL MAC stores, can ANYONE tell me whether they give you samples like eye pigments?
    thanks =]
