When you achieve that highlight “on fleek” on a budget : 3 Wallet-friendly Highlighters

March 20, 2017 Paris B 23 Comments

I showed you a very pretty but also pretty pricey highlighter last week that had everyone sighing wistfully. I’ve realised that many higher end brands like to produce limited edition highlighter powders that are beautifully designed and embossed. It must be the metallic shine that lends to an intricate design, and it is also more attention grabbing.

Yet, like many of you reading my blog I’m not terribly skilled at wearing highlighter (if you are, this is no insult, I promise!). The learning curve is less steep than learning to wear bronzer (you only risk looking like a metallic robot vs falling face first in cocoa powder) but there is a learning curve.

If you don’t quite feel up to dropping RM200 or more on a product you aren’t sure about, I have a few budget-friendly alternatives for you!

Highlighters perform the opposite function of bronzer or contouring products. You use a highlighter product on the high points of your face, where the light would hit to give the impression of light. Done in a subtle manner, you can create an illusion of higher cheekbones or a sharper nose, or just to give skin a subtle lit-from-within look. Overdo it, and hello, shiny robot 😛

I’m not personally crazy about using highlighter powders. I do tend to use blush that have a touch of shimmer or shine to them, so adding on more shine can be counter-productive. Also, I don’t necessarily work in an environment that will encourage you shining like a beacon LOL! 😀 But I keep the odd highlight powder on hand, because it’s useful, and hell, they’re pretty 😛

That said, I found a couple in my stash that I’d peg as being budget-friendly options that do a very good job. So, I wanted to share, especially if you’re interested to try a highlighter powder, without dropping the big bucks! 🙂

Hey there Sexy Mama! theBalm makes sure your face does not outshine you

September 10, 2012 Paris B 37 Comments

Last week, I was all moany and groany about taking photos of used products for a review so I decided I’d put my money where my mouth is, and show you a product I’d been wanting to talk about for some time, but which I never got round to because of… you guessed it, photos. I actually have a picture of this item brand new but it was an awful picture. But never mind the photos, theBalm Sexy Mama powder is one I think worth taking a look at because it does what it says 🙂

I can’t remember where I picked this up but it wasn’t at Sasa where theBalm cosmetics are sold locally. So, I don’t know the local price and if anyone can help me out, I’d really appreciate it! 🙂 What Sexy Mama is, is a translucent setting powder. Nothing terribly fancy. Even the packaging is nothing terribly fancy and I’m not sure how this powder makes you look like a Sexy Mama but there you go!

The powder comes in a cardboard case inside a cardboard sleeve. I would suggest you keep it inside that sleeve especially if you plan to tote it around for touch ups. The powder can open up easily otherwise and you might end up with a mess. The packaging is simple and straightforward and the imagery is certainly eye catching too. Besides, how could you really overlook something called Sexy Mama right? 😉

Hey you Shady Lady! Yes you – TheBalm Shady Lady Eyeshadow Palette Vol. 2

May 30, 2011 Paris B 10 Comments

I’d heard a lot of raves about TheBalm Shady Lady eyeshadow palettes for a long time. I never tried them because, well, a bit pettily, I had a bit of bad run-in with the brand when they came in last year, so that quite clouded my perception of the brand. A brand with good products can sometimes really spoil it for themselves with crappy PR but there you go. Rants aside, I finally put prejudices aside, and took the plunge recently with some of their products and I must say that I have liked what I have tried thus far. Pettily however, I get my stuff online so local prices are quite unknown to me 😛

TheBalm Shady Lady Eyeshadow Palette Vol. 2

Now, Shady Lady Eyeshadow Palette Vol. 2! I think Shady Lady Vol. 3 is already out and Vol. 2 is getting hard to find, so this one is going to be kept short. I don’t usually like reviewing discontinued stuff, but I have to with this one because I much prefer the look of Vol. 2 to Vol. 3. The latter contains too many light shades while I think Vol. 2 is a more well rounded balanced palette.

TheBalm Stainiac Beauty Queen is a very pretty Hint of Tint!

April 22, 2011 Paris B 26 Comments

Let’s cut to the chase. I don’t like cheek or lip stains. I don’t like anything that stains, period. Tints too, for that matter. They all dry too quickly and the colours tend to be too stark and on lips, they are too drying. No likey!

So picking up something called Stainiac from TheBalm is perhaps something only a glutton for punishment does. A vain attempt to prove to myself that cheek stains or tints just don’t do nuts for me. Ironically, I’m glad I picked Stainiac up though. It proved to me just how wrong I could be.

I love Stainiac! 😀 The colour I chose is Beauty Queen, a rosy berry pink!
