Guerlain cosmetics have rarely failed me since I’ve been using their products. I have tried quite a few items from the line and thus far, I have been wowed every single time or at least, most of the time. I tried the Lingerie de Peau liquid foundation and I liked that one. So, when I got my hands on the Lingerie de Peau foundation and concealer compact, I was quite sure I’d like it too.
Now, did I? It would be interesting to find out, wouldn’t it?
The Lingerie de Peau compact foundation is a cream foundation and concealer in a slim compact… erm… compact. The finish of the case is pure and simple luxury. A rather heavy, highly burnished lacquered surface that attracts fingerprints so you can never get away with any crime. That sort of luxury 😉
Inside, you get a large pan of cream compact foundation and a slim complementing concealer. A sponge is included and it is a very good sponge indeed. My shade is 01 Beige Pale which is the same shade as that of the liquid Lingerie de Peau foundation is 02 Beige Clair which explains why I had problems with colour matching. This cream compact gets lots of raves. I’ve read quite a few tout it to be the perfect cream to powder finish, leaving them with perfect looking skin. Like your skin but better.
I wish I could tell you all that too. Let me tell you what I think instead.
This Guerlain Lingerie de Peau compact foundation was an unmitigated disaster on me. First, the cream foundation oxidised on my skin. 01 is my colour, make no bones about it. I don’t think it goes below 01, to be honest. It applies on my skin a perfect complementing skintone to my skin.
Give it an hour and I’m looking a full shade darker. This is just my face mind you, so imagine how odd it can look contrasting against my neck. For some reason also, it makes my skin look dull. [Edit: I’ve attributed this colour change to it being actually -02 Beige Clair which is a shade too dark for my skintone]
Secondly, I don’t get the cream to powder finish that everyone raves over. I get a cream to oil finish. For some reason, I can’t get this foundation to set on my skin. I’ve tried everything from buffing over with pressed powders, powder foundation or loose powder. It just doesn’t set. Give it a while, and it’ll start to slide around.
I don’t know if I should blame our humidity and heat. I don’t have oily skin and in fact, one would think that this cream compact would be right up my alley. Instead, it makes me look like I should be blotting on the hour, and that I have poor taste in colour matching my foundation.
I will note however, that the raves I’ve read all come from people living in temperate countries, so this may just be a great foundation in a cool, dry climate and less so in a hot humid one, where I’d prefer to stick to powder foundations or liquid foundations that set better on the skin.
I think this swatch shows you more or less how it will look on my face. The swatch on the left is the cream foundation and the one on the right is the concealer. The colour of the concealer is actually, a better match for my skin tone.
I do quite like the concealer for the under eye area. It brightens the eye area and makes it the perfect base for eye makeup. The texture is a bit thicker than the cream foundation and unlike the foundation, the concealer does not slip around nor oxidise throughout the day.
I dab it on with a corner of the sponge included and it is just perfect. Doesn’t do much for blemishes but for the under eye area, its near perfection. Its a pity its such a thin strip because for me, its the only thing I’d use in this compact.
Sorry Guerlain, I love everything else in your line, but I have to be fair, and this just doesn’t cut it for me. Excuse me now, while I go cry into my pillow.
In a nutshell
A compact foundation from Guerlain in a cream foundation formula. It comes together with a complementary concealer and sponge for application. The texture is supposed to be a cream to powder finish. Unfortunately, I found it too oily on my skin and it did not set well. This one also oxidised after about an hour, and doesn’t match my skintone then. It feels very lightweight otherwise, and the concealer is very good for brightening the eye area. I suspect it may fare better for those in a cool and dry climate. In the heat and humidity here, it just melted everywhere. Pity.
Pros: Compact case is easy to tote around, The concealer is nice and brightens up the skin around the eyes
Cons: Oxidised on my skin, Turns oily on my skin and does not set very well, Pricey
For a review from someone who liked it, try Cosmetic Candy but do note that she is based in the UK.
I’m not sure if anyone out there has tried this compact foundation and has a better experience to report? Or have you been disappointed by a particular product in a range or brand that you like using in general? For me, this one has really taken a nose dive as far as my love for Guerlain goes. I do have another liquid foundation – Parure something I bought recently. Heard its really good so let’s hope it doesn’t disappoint 😉

Wow. Nice going Guerlain… Maybe you could use the foundation part as a light concealer as well? Saves the heartbreak, no?
Paris B says
Hmm… the foundation is way too dark for me to use for anything to be honest. But never mind. I’ve found it a home 😀
LeGeeque says
Possibly the first Guerlain product reducing you to tears! 😛 I was contemplating the cream foundation from Paul & Joe. I got a tiny sample of it and the colour was a tad too dark. I’m really curious about other cream foundations!
Paris B says
LOL! Yes indeed! Even if figuratively speaking 😉

I for one am not a fan of cream foundations. I’ve tried Bobbi Brown Oil Free Even Finish and a Chanel one (for the life of me, I can’t seem to recall the name) during my first foray into the world of makeup, and I really REALLY disliked them. They made my oilier skin oilier, makes my face look cakey as the day goes by, and it also just slips and slides on my face no matter how I set it. But I tried these foundations back in the day where I had no idea regarding primers, regardless, I still feel that I won’t like using them now. For me, liquid foundations is the way to go.
Paris B says
You may have a point there about cream foundation. I have tried one or two but for the most part, I do find that they tend to be oilier and harder to set. I have gotten over my fear of liquid foundations but I’m still trying to get my head around cream foundations. Maybe just not in our weather eh?

I was about to say “Aiyah don’t need to cry into your pillow over this foundation!” until I saw the price. Yikes! 😛 Hopefully you can use it when you go to temperate countries? Will it also oxidise and change colour in colder climates?
Paris B says
LOL! Yes indeed! Ouch on the wallet and it doesn’t work. Boo! I’ve found it a new home though so its all good!

sorry to hear this didnt work for u.. i guess there will always be one or two products in a brand that does not work.. also like what u mentioned that reviews of this cream foundation were from people in a temperate climate, hence the chances of it working here can be uncertain… well i guess we will be wiser next time then, maybe when people in more tropical climate or hotter weather (albeit the lack of humidity) rave about a product, then can we contemplate getting it i guess 🙂
Paris B says
Indeed! I don’t expect everything in a brand to work but for it to not work in such an astounding manner was a bit of a shocker LOL! I do tend to agree that sometimes weather plays a part in our purchase considerations. So it is always helpful to read a review from someone living in the same climate so you have an idea what to expect 🙂

On the topic of foundation, have you seen the new Bourjois 123 perfect foundation and concealer ? I swatched both and both looked/felt so promising but I’m not getting it yet til I read some reviews on it. Probably it’s too new, I can’t seems to find any review on it yet.
Paris B says
Wait! There’s a NEW Bourjois foundation? Gimme! 😛 No wait I have no access to it here boohoo… so I’ll have to check it out the next time I come across a Bourjois counter – thanks for the heads up! I didn’t even know it existed

yes…and finally a review’s available:

Sounds too good a review? I’m really hoping this is one product that can correct redness/ dark eye circles on my face effectively. I’m always looking out for shortcuts to take especially on the weekdays’ mornings.
I must say the drugstores brands are getting better and better. I actually finished up a whole tube of the Maybelline’s bb cream and liked it enough to recently bought another tube despite having so many unfinished foundations. Even the new ZA liquid foundation felt promising (thumbs up for the solid glass bottle) too til i saw this Bourjois one.
Paris B says
Wow that sounds like an amazing product. I wonder how it performs next to Healthy Mix? Since its available in Singapore (I hope!) I will pick it up the next time I’m down. I also stumbled on a review for the ZA liquid foundation that looked good. I don’t recall seeing it here yet though.
Amanda says
I tend to find that cream foundations make the skin oilier. And it is rather obvious that the foundation is a tad too dark for your skin! Use it as a contour shade, maybe? =)
Paris B says
I never thought of that Amanda. It might just be the case that cream foundations are heavier and thus oilier? Sadly yes, the foundation was just too dark for me but I have found a new owner so it won’t go to waste!
Shay says
Oh my. Seems like guerlain has hurt you deeply this time. 😛
Paris B says
Haha yeah well can’t expect a miracle every time I guess 🙂
Stephanie/Yukaeshi says
Ach, I’ve been eyeing this foundation (Between this and Burberry) but I was put off by it’s creaminess. I don’t have oily skin, but I prefer a more powder-like finish so I didn’t get this in the end. I did, however, get the Guerlain Meteorites Compact, and it broke me out! 🙁 I do kind of love Guerlain and it is really a brand with class, but I think their face products don’t really suit me.
Paris B says
ooh sorry to hear the Guerlain Meteorites compact broke you out 🙁 I do quite like that one too even if it doesn’t give the same sort of glowy finish the other powders do. I do tend to agree that this compact foundation is just a bit too heavy for our weather. Maybe in a cooler climate it would work better 🙂

This cream compact version is for dry skin only and I have dry skin so it’s perfect for me.
