I first got this Burberry Lip Cover back in April/May 2011. The colour is Delicate Rose and its a very lovely shade of pinky-nude that is surprisingly flattering on me and I’m sure on many. You can see swatches of it and my review of Delicate Rose here.
When I got it, I was not impressed by the flimsy packaging that gave way on me quite quickly. The magnet cover was a nice touch, but I was quite ambivalent about it. What I did note was that the lipstick had no smell. That was a nice touch.
Recently, I dug this one out again and when I twisted it up and placed it to my lips, I caught that unmistakeable waxy smell of lipstick from the 80’s. You know what I’m talking about right? That smell that says “I’m on my way to turning bad”.
Drat.
I didn’t think too much of it then. But yesterday, I took this out again to use and oh my! The wax scent has just gotten stronger! Application is still smooth, colour is still lovely, but that awful awful smell remains. I had to wipe off the lip colour and start again with something else.
I was understandably upset. This is a RM96 lipstick. It isn’t cheap.
I first had to contend with shoddy packaging back then. Now, just about 6 months later, I find that this RM96 barely used lipstick is starting to turn bad. That waxy smell is usually the first sign of it going rancid and it will only really get worse.
Very disappointing, Burberry. I was planning to try the new Lip Mists but now I don’t think I will. Not with a lifespan of 6 months anyway. I still have that much lipstick left and I really should toss it but for whatever reason, I’m still holding on. Maybe because it still looks sleek and pretty on the outside, even if its rotting away on the inside 😛
I’ve had lipsticks from many brands, high and low end and they don’t die on me this quickly. I don’t know if I got a dud. I do hope so though because I’d hate for someone else to pay this much for a lipstick and then have it stink up in 6 months. For the money I pay, I’m sticking to Dior Addict or Rouge Dior lipsticks – lovely textures, pretty packaging, gorgeous colours and they do not stink of wax!
Am I the only one who has experienced this with Burberry Lip Cover lipsticks? Did you also have a similar problem with Burberry lipsticks? Don’t you hate it when something this expensive goes all pear shaped on you so quickly?

Oh dear, I am sorry to hear that. 🙁 Burberry is JUST launching in Singapore this month (so I’ve heard) and I wanted to check it out but ehhhh maybe not anymore… lipsticks are supposed to last at least a few years, not 6 months :S (And maybe it was even less than 6 months?! Since you only dug it out recently… who knows!)
xx Renee

Hi Renee, many people have reported that their lipsticks are fine so it would appear I got a dud 🙁 I actually thought Burberry has been out in Singapore already! Didn’t realize it wasn’t yet. Do check it out anyway. Its a pretty decent (if a little bit boring in terms of colours) 🙂
Lip Stalker says
Nooooo!!! How horrible! I’ve been eyeing the Burberry lippies…but now I wont!!!
I’d keep it too…just because!! I wonder if anyone else has had the same problem as you…
Paris B says
I know, its very sad and no one has reported any untoward incidents so I think I’m just unlucky. Don’t let my one experience put you off 🙂
Lipstick fan says
Dear Paris B,
I bought a lip velvet rosy red! And it has the worst chemical smell and taste. I am taking it back and no more Burberry for me!!

Boo!!! That is way too soon. How disappointing!

Sadly yes, very disappointing indeed

Oh goodness, I’m so glad you wrote about this. I was thinking of getting one to try out the other day but for some reason, did not get around to it. And now I’m glad I didn’t! If I were you I’d probably take it back to the Burberry counter and ask them about it! At least see what they have to say for themselves. Let us know if you do!
Paris B says
I may have them take a look at it. I got a friend to sniff at it and they wanted to gag – it wasn’t that awful but just very strong and very waxy.
Connie De Alwis says
My Burberry lipstick stank from the moment I got it. Just got worse. The typical lipstick wax smell >.<
Paris B says
Seriously? Perhaps we both got duds? I don’t recall a fragrance in mine even – my review said no scent (thank goodness for reviews)
gio says
Oh dear, that’s horrible! What a disappointment!
Paris B says
I think I just got unlucky 🙁
Jamilla says
OMG! HORRIBLE! Did Asia get old stock? So far, so good with my lip mists – will let you know if anything bad happens!
Paris B says
I hope yours don’t turn or if not, at least not this quickly! I don’t know what we got but no one else seems to report an issue with theirs.
Lily says
Eeks! Such a big boo boo. My bad experiences were with Bobbi Brown’s lipsticks. All of them smell awful after less than a year. I threw them all out and never repurchased. I’ll stick to my Dior, thank you very much!
Paris B says
Now you reminded me! I had a Bobbi Brown lipstick once too that turned quite quickly. I have never been back to Bobbi Brown since 😛
Fanny says
HUHHhhhh?!?! I bought a nude cashmere lippie a month ago and just bought another nude rose from Spore last weekend which cost SGD$43 and I have not start using it. Sigh…I am now so so so so SO disappointed and with much regrets!! 🙁
Paris B says
Oh don’t be regretful Fanny 🙂 You may be lucky! Based on all the comments so far, it looks like I’m just unlucky 🙂
Marina(Makeup4all) says
Oh, my that’s crazy! Haven’t tried Burberry lip products (yet) so that it very disappointing…
Paris B says
I think I just got unlucky – pity it had to happen to me eh? 😉
tass says
gosh. that was totally unexpected from high end brands. err..maybe you can log a complaint and they might replace it for you? like i did to one of the local brand.. newly bought, used not more than 2 times, the next day, like black magic the lippies (yea, 2 of them) were broken at the base.. i shoot an email with broken pic (and heart), and good thing they replaced me new one and they lasted good ^^ so i guess its all abt new products ;>
Paris B says
I will take it up with them – I hope I can still find the lippie 🙂 Glad to know you got a replacement quickly 🙂
Shuaddict says
Ouch that’s really not going to inspire confidence in consumers. Especially for something with a pretty hefty price tag.
Paris B says
Sadly yes. Its just unfortunate it happened to me 😛
nicole'smirror says
They should have better quality.. Was in Inglot today and their lipstick smells yummy. hahahaha
Paris B says
Ah Inglot. Way too far for me to go to see them that I’ve forgotten all about them! LOL
electronicfly says
Wha?! That is really fast! How long is it supposed to last? If you have the receipt/ they keep track of their customers’ purchases you should so get a replacement 🙁 Not cheap wei!
Paris B says
Will go dig it out from the waste bin 😛

i dont really use lip products but i get a few as presents (mostly from ysl – aunt’s hubby’s cousin probably twice removed works there) and they’re still lovely after at least 4 yrs. but caveat is they’re pretty heavily scented… so could burberry’s be due to the fact they dont have scent to mask that rancid smell?
Paris B says
Ooh I love YSL lippies 😀 They do smell very strongly of perfume though. The Burberry one had no scent that I recall (I double checked my review to be sure 🙂 ) but a good lipstick should never have to mask any wax scent 😉
lyn says
I just got my first Burberry Lip Cover lipstick yesterday and yes, it does have a slightly sweetish rosy and waxy scent. So I don’t think yours has gone bad yet. I would suggest visiting Burberry’s and asking if they can open a new tube for you to sniff. Then you compare to your lipstick to see if it has really gone off.
Like I mentioned in my tweets, you “will” know when something has turned rancid. It will smell SO BAD that you will wanna gag. Not to mention that it will taste gross too. This was what happened to a couple of unused Dior Addicts I had for less than a year. I had to bin them because they were so disgustingly foul. Which is why I’m a little hesitant about getting Diors now although their formula is lovely.
Paris B says
Oh mine hasn’t gone bad per se. But its on its way. When I open the tube I get this POW! smell right in my nose and that bugs me. I don’t remember a scent to start with, but perhaps its a slight scent only which is why I didn’t notice it before? I have some Dior Addict lipsticks from years ago (ahem!) and they are still working very well but I guess every brand has their duds 🙂
Kai says
Aww, that’s too bad that happened! D: The lipstick looked lovely too and I’m certainly considering purchasing some Burberry cosmetics items in the future, including for the lipsticks. I’m thinking/hoping that you might’ve just gotten a dud though? *crosses fingers*
I’ve bought a lipstick from Smashbox online before that it was rancid as soon as it arrived. in hindsight i probably should’ve called and complained and got my money back, but for some stupid reason I didn’t -_-;;; and that was REALLY obviously rancid, because not only did it smell foul (not just waxy smell, but a rather gross smell that got steadily worse) but the texture was completely gone. So maybe in your case since the texture and color haven’t turned, it’s not really rancid? lol although then again if you can’t stand the smell anymore, that makes it hard to wear regardless if the texture is fine.
you can also try airing it out for a while to see if it gets better or worse. one blogger i read said that for lipsticks that were scented, she left the cap off overnight and the smell lessened a great deal (she got inspired by the testers that are almost never scented). yes i guess it invites the lipstick to dry, but one night wouldn’t dry it completely out anyway, so maybe give that a try?
really sorry this happened D: you should also do what Lyn suggest, take the lipstick to the Burberry counter and see what they say and smell a new tube or something. At the very least you can rant specifically to Burberry themselves and let them know that you, as a consumer, is not happy with the quality control (both the possible rancid-ness, and the packaging breaking on you)!
Paris B says
Hi Kai sorry to hear about your bad experience with Smashbox! I guess we all have our dud moments 🙂 I did try airing it out but it didn’t get better. This isn’t totally rancid yet just smelly LOL! I don’t mind scent in lipsticks (dont’ love it but I can live with it) but it was an underlying wax smell that got to me. I’ll try to take it up and see what happens 🙂
Lisa says
Yikes. I have a lip mist and I love the texture. So far so good for this item. I’m gonna monitor my piece closely now that you shared this. Yikes!
Paris B says
I’ve heard so many good things about the Lip Mists! I may just try one regardless 😛
