What comes before cleansing? Dermalogica PreCleanse of course!

May 26, 2011 Paris B 30 Comments

I think my love for cleansing oils (and my wide and varied experimentation with brands) is no longer in doubt yes? 😉 Here’s another I’ve been using for a while, and which (to my surprise) I am considering a repurchase! *gasp*

I have never really used anything from Dermalogica skincare so the PreCleanse is my first. I had no expectations of it at all but let’s cut to the chase. I love this one! 😀

If you are already familiar with cleansing oils, this is a cleansing oil. It is a makeup remover cum facial cleanser and it does the job very well.

Like all cleansing oils, you have to use this with dry hands on dry skin. I use it the way I use all cleansing oils (dry hands, dry face; add water to emulsify a few times before rinsing). I love the scent which is lightly citrus and very refreshing at the end of the day.

It cleans my makeup off without problems at all. Even waterproof mascara (although that sometimes takes a bit of work so I’d suggest you remove your mascara first). I am quite liberal with it but I have been quite pleasantly surprised that the bottle, although looking quite small at first, isn’t finished yet after 2 months. And I use it practically every day.

What might be a good thing is the packaging. It isn’t packaged as a pump bottle, but as a nozzle style dispenser. This allows you to control just how much oil you need each time. Some days I use less, some days I use more, depending on whether I have more or less makeup on. The texture is quite liquid and not thick or sticky at all.

I even use it on weekends, when I don’t wear makeup, because I just like how nice and clean my skin feels thereafter. I do double cleanse (follow up with a facial wash) all the time, and the name of the product is PreCleanse which implies you use it before any cleansing gel/foam.

It isn’t drying on my skin, it cleans my skin a treat and it smells lovely. I don’t have any complaints 🙂

Pros: Light texture, Lovely citrus scent, Not drying, Cleans skin well of makeup and dirt

Cons: Pricey

I know there are a few Dermalogica users among the regular readers here so I’m sure quite a few of you have tried this yes? Do you like it as much as I do? 🙂 This is one of the products which Dermalogica is selling under the FITE programme where some money goes towards helping women entrepreneurs on the path to financial independence. Here is the ingredient list for anyone interested.

I think I might have to suck it up and purchase this when I run out. I have seen this on StrawberryNET.com in a large salon size (473ml). Maybe I should get that one 😛 Since I like this so much, do you have other Dermalogica recs that you like that you think I might like too?

Paris B

Dermalogica PreCleanse retails at RM140/150ml (I think) at Dermalogica counters and stockists. I’ve also seen it sold on StrawberryNET.com but I don’t know how the prices compare.

    Yea it cleans well.
But the SA from Dermalogica told me before that we should not use it everyday as it will dry up our skin. She then suggest me to use milk cleanser for normal make up and only use cleansing oil for heavy make up. how do u think?
Until today i’m still unsure…cos i’m kinda attracted by shu’s cleansing oil =P

Hmm I’ve been using cleansing oil for years now and don’t find them worse for my slightly dry skin. I use them everyday and I’ve use a lot asy previous post would have told you 😉 personally I dislike cleansing milk as I don’t feel it cleans my skin well. If we moisturise well I don’t think it’ll be a problem 🙂

    ooooo.

But Dermalogica broke me out when I first tried it. So yeah. It gives me a bit of the shivers.

Glad it works for you though.

Yes! I’m using this one and it works like a charm! Glad you like it! I works especially well with my Dermalogica cream cleanser too. I was sold when they did the double cleanse on my hand a few years ago. And Yes, this one lasts forever! LOVE IT!
The Total Eye Care SPF15 is quite good too…it’s an eye cream for daytime with SPF 🙂 I’ve only used the samples though.

Thanks for the eye cream rec and yay for liking this cleanser too! It’s quite impressive. Even the price tag is impressive.

I had wanted to purchase this Precleanse too but just as Stephy said, the SA said that using everyday will dry out our skin. Was told that cream cleanser works better in removing light makeup without drying our skin. Precleanse should be used sparingly..max 2-3 times a week as deep pore cleansing? I am a Dermalogica user too, out of the whole range of products, would recommend the Skin Hydrating Booster( great for boosting hydration ) and their Hydrating Mask.

Thanks for the skincare recs. As I told Stephy I’ve been using cleansing oils and the double cleansing method for years and it’s been alright for me. I do tend to follow the Japanese way of skincare so I layer my moisture products and I think that helps as the Japanese are avid users of cleansing oils and don’t seem to have a problem with dry skin 🙂

    Hey,

I’ve used this before and like you I totally love it. However, I did not purchase due to the price. I’m currently using Cyber Colours Cleansing Oil bought from Sasa as it’s roughly about RM30+ after 20% discount (I only buy when there is a sale going on).

However, for Alexandra & Stephy, I think the SA is just trying to sell you more cleansers. I’ve used oil cleansers for many years and yet I don’t have dry skin yet – I still have oily t-zones. FYI, their SA gets commission for selling more products.

I believe that having your skin ‘steamed’ when doing facials makes your skin dehydrated more. Can see the top layer of my skin is totally dehydrated – hence the SA intro other products to ‘help’ with this problem. I no longer have this problem ever since I stopped going for facials at Leonard Drake/Aster Spring Salons.

Hi Shazzac, think the SA advised me against using cleansing oil everyday because I have dry to dehydrated skin at that point. It’s ok to use 2-3 times a week though, but for everday usage, cleansing cream will fare much better because of my skin type.
I totally agree with you though that SA’s at Leonard Drake tend to be more ‘selling’ oriented, which irritates me a lot. For their facials, yeah…planning a shift to another place!

I use Dermalogica, but I stopped using their cleansers when I realised it was soap that was dehydrating my skin. I now cleanse my face exclusively with oil cleansers (my faves so far are MAC’s cleanse off oil and Precleanse) and my skin is SOOO much happier. Like Alexandra, I highly recommend the Skin Hydrating Booster (contains hyaluronic acid) and Skin Hydrating Mask, and I also like their Skin Smoothing Cream though I use it sparingly (its a bit heavy).

Thanks for the recs! i still double cleanse cos it just doesn’t feel right just cleansing once but I also double moisturise with lotions and creams so I think that helps 🙂 I dislike cleansers that feel drying too!

I’ve been using this for years, and it has never failed me (Though I agree with you on removing mascara/eye make-up, best to remove them with a separate eye make-up remover first), so it’s my favourite cleansing oil and I’ll never find another lol 😀

I used to use mainly Dermalogica products (The Ultracalming line for sensitive skin) but after they reformulated it it broke me out so I’ve changed to Cellnique (Since my cousin owns a salon), but Precleanse is one thing I’m never without. That, and the Daily Microfoliant. I use it about twice a week despite it’s name- you might want to check it out, and one full-sized bottle can last you up to a year @[email protected] I’ve got plenty of deluxe-sized samples of the Daily Microfoliant lying around, though, and I can’t finish them by myself…

Right now I am using Dermalogica uneven skin tones kit… I used to not like it..the smell was teribble and I don’t understand why I should use it because I bought with my own money Cetaphil fash wash..but then I try it on I think it does not make my skin feel tight…so now like you I am double cleanse..first with cetaphil to get rid all the make up then with Biotherm…(it was a free gift so if it runs out I might consider buying again..but not all of the product coz its quite expensive) hahah..my own 2 cents of thought

The Aster Spring cosmeticians always use Precleanse when i go for my facials, so agree on the nice smell part.

My favourite Dermalogica product is the Skin Hydrating mask. Very the very pricey but it does its work well! So far no complaints.

Thanks for the rec! I’ll have to look into all your recs some time. I had a facial at Aster Spring once but I was very unimpressed so I don’t think I’d go back.

I think I have to contact my cousin if he still works for Dermalogica in the US. Before, he was giving Dermalogica products to us as gifts when he comes here in the Phils. but I really never used it! I was not into skincare before and I was not familiar with these until I started reading beauty blogs! boo! …. nice review Miss Paris! 🙂
