There are 2 masks from Cellnique that will be reviewed here – one is a clay mask and the other is a sheet mask – take your pick which type you prefer! 🙂 Well not literally take your pick, but the two masks are quite different and can actually be used consecutively or separately. I received these recently and decided to try them together and learnt something new in process- moisture masks work better when used after clay masks! I’ll elaborate further below 🙂
Cellnique Advanced Bio Renewal Masque (Clay Mask)
When I saw that the Cellnique mask was a clay mask, I thought it would be like the Kiehl’s Rare Earth mask. Clay masks are well known not to be great for those with drier skins but one day, realizing I’d misplaced my Kiehl’s mask (is there a gremlin in the house?!) I reached instead for the Cellnique Advanced Bio Renewal Mask that was sent to me.
The mask is a clay mask but smells delicious – like pineapple or tropical fruit puree. Just don’t mistake this for your salad dressing! When I saw that the mask contains fruit enzymes, I went “Ah! No wonder it smells of tropical fruit!” Its a yummy sort of smell 🙂
I spread a thin layer on my face, as I do all clay masks and the blue clay mask is quite a sight – don’t go round scaring anyone with this – or maybe do scare people with this for Halloween! 🙂
There is a slight tingling feel on the skin which isn’t unpleasant. The clay mask will dry and harden a little so wait until it all dries then wipe off with a wet washcloth or rinse off with warm water. I found my skin feeling super smooth – must be all that fruit enzymes and AHA at work.
I must say that although this is a clay mask, it did not leave my skin feeling very dry after washing off, though you should follow up with a hydrating moisturizer.
The Advanced Bio Renewal Mask is targeted at clearing dull skin and open and enlarged pores. I can see how this mask can help. Just after 1 use, my skin felt better already. However, I won’t recommend using this more than 1 time a week and not if you are allergic to fruit extracts as I know some people are.
A 50g tub of Cellnique Advanced Bio Renewal Mask retails at RM159 (US$55 online) and can be purchased online (free shipping worldwide) or at Cellnique salons and authorized counters (list). I rather liked this one and since you don’t use too much each time 1 tub can last a long time.
Pros: Leaves skin feeling smooth, Not drying
Cons: May not be suitable for anyone allergic to Fruit Extracts or AHA
Ingredient List: Purified Water (Aqua purificata), Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Disodium Cocamphodiacetate, Pineapple Enzyme (Bromelain), Papaya Enzyme (Papain), Polyethylene Micro Beads, Glycolic Acid, Malic Acid, Citric Acid, Tartaric Acid, Tomato Extract, Lemon (Citrus medica limonum) Oil, Grape Seed (Vitis vinifera) Extract, Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), Amino Acid, Saponaria (Saponaria offcinalis) Extract, Propylene Glycol, Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis), Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis) Gel, Linden (Tilia cordata), Titanium Dioxide, Allantoin, Disodium EDTA, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, DMDM Hydantoin, Tropical Fruit Fragrance.
Cellnique Intensive Hydrating Masque (Sheet Mask)
Sheet masks are a wonderful invention. Never has masking at home been made so easy as with the invention of the pre-soaked sheet mask! 🙂 The Cellnique Intensive Hydrating Silk Masque comes sealed in individual silver packs in a box of 5.
I found the sheet mask very wet. That was my first impression. It literally drips all over so you might want to bear that in mind so you don’t mess up your dressing table. I suggest you have a face towel on hand just in case the essence drips along the sides of your face onto your pillow when you’re lying down.
The paper mask feels a little thin and actually tore a little as I was handling it. As a hydrating mask however, it seemed to do its job just fine. It cooled down my skin a treat (its especially nice to use if you’ve chilled it for a few minutes before use) and after 15 minutes, my skin felt plump and hydrated. It however is about as nice as my skin feels using most moisturizing masks so this isn’t one item from Cellnique I particularly like.
An unusual instruction on the box was to rinse your face after 15 minutes use before going onto your usual skincare. I thought it was a little odd as usually the essence from the mask is part of the skincare regime. However I follow instructions so I rinsed it all off. I still don’t quite see why… so again I’m not quite happy with this one.
A box of 5 pieces of Cellnique Intensive Hydrating Masque retails for RM129 – a little pricey for what it does. Available online for US$46 or at Cellinique salons (list).
Pros: Skin feels hydrated and soft
Cons: Pricey, Mask tears easily
Ingredient List: Purified Water (Aqua), 1, 3 – Butylene Glycol, Glyceryl Polyacrylate, Sodium PCA (Sodium 1-Pyrrolidonecarboxylate Solution), Propylene Glycol, Lemon (Citrus medica limonum) Fruit Extract, Sour Milk (Lactic Acid), Mandelic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Carboxymethyl Beta-Glucan, Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) Flower Extract, Algae Extract, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Sodium Hyaluronate, Co-enzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone), Hydrogenated Egg Yolk Phosphlipids, Acerola (Malpighia punicifolia) Fruit Extract, Alcohol Denat., Glycerin, Lecithin, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Fragrance, PPG-26-Buteth-26, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, BHA (Salicylic Acid), Diazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Phenoxyethanol, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Sulisobenzone (Benzophenone-4)
Use a moisture mask after clay mask to replenish skin’s moisture
So remember I said you could use it consecutively? I used the Bio Renewal mask first to remove the dull top layer of the skin. Then, after rinsing off the clay, I relaxed with an Intensive Hydrating silk mask sheet. My skin felt more hydrated after this.
You will need some time to yourself to do this but that’s what home facials are for 🙂 Now I’ve learnt this, I’m going to do the same every time I use a clay mask even if I don’t use the same products as featured here – a moisturizing mask helps add moisture back into the skin and without the dull skin in the way after using a clay mask, it works doubly well.
You can try this at home too! Just use any clay mask first to rid skin of impurities and dull skin; and follow up with a moisturizing sheet mask after that. Its lovely 🙂
Have you tried this method of masking before? How about these masks from Cellnique?
Stay beautiful,
Paris B

I tried the moisture mask and like it. And thanks for your review on the clay mask i will try it soon.
ParisB says
Hi Cat
Do let us know if you like the clay mask after you try it 🙂
Renz says
I have the clay mask. Love it. Lasts forever! haha. I do it once a week when I remember its already more than 6 months and I just reached the halfway mark. But then I spread it very thinly.
ParisB says
Hi Renz
Ya I can see that clay mask lasting forever too! Doesn’t it smell so yummy?!
Phy says
I tried the Bio Renewal mask before. My face was in pain 🙁
maybe my face are too dry and sensitive. but i love other products from cellnique like the seaweed cleansing gel. =)
ParisB says
Hi Phy
Yikes! It must have been too strong for your skin. Fruit enzymes and AHA can be very abrasive. I haven’t tried the cleansing gel though 🙂
plue says
LOL. I have been doing clay mask first den whitening/ hydrating mask after, it does work much better than using the whitening/ hydrating before cleaning skin entirely.
i suppose ur pores are clean so the goodies are absorbed much more easily? 😀
ParisB says
Hi Plue
That’s good to know! I think the clay mask helps to clear off the top layer of cells and allow better absorption – but what the heck so long as it works right? 🙂
prettybeautiful says
this is what i always try to practice at home too – double mask. deep cleanse then a hydrating mask 😀
ParisB says
Yo prettybeautiful
Now I’ve worked this out, I’ve been doing it and its great!
electronicfly says
Would you say the Kiehl’s or Cellnique is better than the other? I’m looking for something that will help clean and shrink my pores. 🙁
(Kiehl’s isn’t helping by always running out of the samples/not opening on time. Sigh)
ParisB says
Hi Electronicfly
I can’t quite say which is better. Cellnique might be more abrasive as reader Phy pointed out in her comment so it might not suit sensitive skins. It worked for me though. Both masks leave my skin feeling smooth and clean and have an instant pore shrinking effect – which may or may not last depending on your skin condition.

I’m bookmarking the Cellnique clay mask! I bought one from the Boots Organics line, and while it works well and is a lot cheaper, it smells kind of gross :S. So I don’t use it as often as I should, probably. Might try to get a sample of the Khiels Mask tomorrow though!
ParisB says
Hi Justine
Thats the thing eh? Some things work well but smell awful and we dont’ want awful smelling things on our face! I hope you find something nice that works 🙂
Jasmine says
Hi Paris,
AHA can increase skin’s sensitivity to the sun. I hope you used it at night! I found that I grew more freckles (SIGH) after using an AHA wash in the morning.
ParisB says
Hi Jasmine
Thanks for the reminder about AHA. I only ever use this mask at home and at night and I use my usual high SPF sunscreens in the day. So far so good – touch wood 😛

I am a Cellnique products user + treatment.
1. Advanced Bio Renewal Masque. It name after as a masque but often use as deep pore cleasing and exfoliation. It is one of the main product being use when u go for facial treatment w Cellnique. Therefore, it has been a part of my skin care regime too. Tips on how to use it is to apply a thin layer and leave it for 5mins on your face and then with few drops of warm water, wet your fingers and carefully move in circle motion (just like how your regular face wash). Once a week would do.
2. Cellnique Intensive Hydrating Masque. I’ve used this before but altho I like most of its product, this is one of my least fave. Like what Paris said, its so wet. However, I substitute this product in my regime w INTENSIVE SOOTHING & HYDRATING MASQUE because it cames as a tube. Perhaps you can try it too?
No matter which products brand are used, I do finds exfoliating first then actual masks will give optimum result.
ParisB says
Hi Pearl
Thank you for your input! That mask is so wet it drips! Quite a pain 😛 I haven’t tried the Intensive Soothing & Hydrating mask – perhaps next time. I usually exfoliate with a scrub before doing a mask but this is the first time I’m doing 2 masks back to back and liking the effects 🙂

LOL This blue clay mask can indeed be used for Halloween! Blue face that glows in the dark would be even better! LOLL (Blue MJ) 😛
And a smooth face that glows in the day LOL 😉
ParisB says
Hi Ant
Ya slap it on and scare kids silly and then wash off and have nice skin afterwards 🙂
winnie says
i have recently started doing 1st clay mask, follow by hydrating mask. good effect. mine is a sleeping mask, so don’t need to wash off 😀
ParisB says
Hi Winnie
That’s even more convenient! LOL 🙂
yuki says
ahhh… nice review… I’ve been looking around for good masks… was really tempted to get Kiehl’s but then it’s out of my budget… same like this one =(
I love enzymes~~ I tried the Nzyme pore refining mask by Milab… I love the smell and my skin feels soft afterwards… Pore tightening, not so sure but it does clean my pores as it’s also a scrub…
Any good suggestions for cheaper masks? I’m a really poor student… haha…
ParisB says
Hi Yuki
If you look on the flip side – 1 tub of good mask can easily last you at least 1 year which is a saving in the long run. I don’t usually use clay masks except for these 2 current ones so I can’t think of any cheaper clay masks that are good. If I come across any I’ll be sure to write about it.
Michelle says
My guess of why the hydrating mask suggests a rinse off is probably due to the amount of acidic ingredients in it – lemon extract, lactic acid from sour milk and salicylic acid. Just a wild guess!
ParisB says
Hi Michelle
LOL that’s entirely possible!
Chien Teng says
I’ve been doing the clay mask followed by moisturising mask method for about 2 years now, and I’m 15 😛 Haha my mum taught me this method & it works like a charm!
I have super sensitive skin & my experiences with Cellnique haven’t been good 🙁 But it seems to be working for alot of people 🙂
ParisB says
Hi Chien Teng
Great that you’re taking care of your skin so early! I must agree that Cellnique’s products may not suit those with sensitive skin – the Bio Renewal mask is a bit abrasive even for me.
caryn says
yes! i use twice a week, feel my skin very clean and smooth. i like the pineapple enzyme.
hoong says
where and how can i get the sample of these?
