New YSL Rouge Volupte Lipsticks

October 23, 2008 Paris B 4 Comments

I’d been seeing many pictures of the new YSL Rouge Volupte lipsticks online but they have only just come into Malaysia. I haven’t been to the YSL counter recently, but when I saw these at the airport, I knew I had to try them to see what they were like.

YSL Rouge Volupte lipstick

The YSL Rouge Volupte lipsticks are YSL’s newest range of lipsticks. The case which you can see in the picture on the left is very ornate and might I venture to say, gaudy? I’m sorry YSL, I used to associate you with elegence and old fashioned grace and charm. I certainly did not factor in gaudy ornate designs with loops and curicles around it!

Texture wise, the Rouge Volupte lipsticks are amazing. They are creamy and so pigmented the colour is almost exactly what you see on the back of the tester or what you see on the lipstick itself. I tested it on my hand. It went on like a charm, but none of the colours appealed to me.

I much prefer sheerer lip colours. With a sheer lip colour, you can build it up and it looks less “thick” on your lips. With an opaque lip colour, one swipe is enough to say “Look! Lipstick!” Its not for me. Not to say that you may not like it!

If I were to get one of these, I’d get it in a red. A bright red would be all the better. The reason is simple. To wear a proper red lipstick, you must get one that is a true red and screams “I’m a red lipstick and proud of it!” The best true red lipsticks are also opaque colours, because when you are wearing a red lip, you want something that truly stands out.

Unfortunately though, most of the colours I tested from the Rouge Volupte series were either too pink or too fuschia to suit me. I’d go so far as to say they looked garish on me. Argh! However, if you have a darker skin tone, I think some of the colours would look amazing on you. On fair skin, the contrast is too great so I end up looking like a painted doll. Temptalia has some swatches that might give you an idea of what it looks like on (go here) I’ll wait till I see it at our local YSL counters then see if they have a proper true red. The YSL Rouge Volupte lipsticks retail for RM98 each (I think). Ouchies!

I totally agree with you. After seeing these in real life I was completely turned off. I’m very fair and all the colors were garish. I can’t imagine wearing them out in the daylight. They do have a red but I cannot remember if it is a true red..I think it leans toward the blue-ish side so it may turn fuchsia on some people. But I have plenty of opaque reds that I don’t need to spend all that money on one of the YSL lipsticks. Oh and the packaging is truly tacky. Thanks for the great article!
