Review: Skin care: Kanebo Blanchir Day Conditioner SPF29

December 19, 2007 Paris B 2 Comments

Kanebo Blanchir Whitening Day Conditioner SPF 29 ( Medicated )

I’d been recommended the Kanebo Blanchir Whitening Day Conditioner SPF 29 ( Medicated ) by the girl in the Kanebo salon when I went for my last facial. I was itching to try something new and this was new (to me). The medicated element I’m given to understand is merely the Japanese way of labelling the item because it is supposed to have whitening/lightening effects.

Anyway, this is the moisturiser cum sunscreen by Kanebo Blanchir. The texture is very fluid and light and it comes in a slim pump bottle. It does feel slightly sticky on the hand but once you apply it and let it sink in, you won’t notice it at all. I liked that you only need one pump to cover your face because of its fluid texture.

Living in the tropics however, I find that SPF29 just doesn’t cut it for me. So, I use this as moisturiser and then apply another layer of sunblock over it. However, if you are living in temperate zones, then this might work better because the sun isn’t so hot.

I think it cost RM168 for a 30ml bottle. Not super expensive for a department store brand but pricey for a sunscreen.

Pros: Fluid, light, pump bottle makes it easy to dispense

Cons: Pricey, not enough SPF for the tropics

Review: Skincare: Kanebo Blanchir Night Conditioner

August 11, 2007 Paris B 3 Comments

Onto the night regime for the Kanebo Blanchir series of skincare. I use the Blanchir Whitening Night Conditioner. The picture below shows the Moisture version which is for dry skin and maybe more suitable for those in colder climates where the air is drier. Here in Malaysia, its hot and humid so I go with the normal one (the packaging is the same, just that it doesn’t say “Moisture” on the front).

kanebo night conditioner

The Whitening Night Conditioner comes in a tub. I don’t usually like creams that come in a tub because of the hygiene factor. Realising this perhaps, Kanebo has included a little spatula with the tub. A flexible plastic ring is included, that you can slip over the top of the tub, with a little slit for the spatula to sit in. Quite ingenious.

The texture of this night conditioner is similar to that of the milky conditioner, except that its thicker. Its almost a gel texture and has a translucent cream shade. This runnier texture means that you end up using less on your face, thereby stretching your dollar. I found that if I put too much, my face felt a bit sticky. So, I only use a tiny little dollop from the spatula, and its more than sufficient to cover my whole face.

What I like about this Night Conditioner is that is makes my face feel so soft after application. It sinks into the skin almost immediately. The next morning when I get up, my face looks dewy and fresh. Its awesome that way!

As for the whitening properties, I have stated before that there are less “whitening” than “brightening” properties. I have been using the entire line for a couple of weeks, and I find it works but I can’t vouch for the brightening qualities of each individual product. However, I love this cream simply because it makes my face feel fresh, moisturised, not oily, soft and dewy. You couldn’t ask for more in a night cream.

A tub retails for RM168 for 40g. It sounds expensive but it will last, simply because of its light texture. You don’t use a lot of it at all. For me, this is a keeper!

Update April 2008: I’m no longer using this as a night cream because I found it too light. I was recommended to layer it over the day moisturiser but I felt it would defeat the purpose. Maybe my skin is getting drier now. I’ve reflected this update in the rating.

Review: Skincare: Kanebo Blanchir Milky Conditioner

August 7, 2007 Paris B 5 Comments

After using the first step in double-moisturising, comes the second step, which is the normal moisturiser. Under the Kanebo Blanchir line, it is called the Milky Conditioner.

Kanebo Blanchir Milky Conditioner

I like the texture of this milky conditioner which is like that of a liquid gel. The moisturiser is an opaque creamy colour, like condensed milk, that spreads very easily. I like that because it means you don’t have to use very much to cover your whole face.

There is a light scent but it doesn’t bother me. I like that it is light and soaks right into my skin nearly immediately. My skin feels hydrated and comfortable and it stays that way the whole day after I apply it in the morning. I’m not quite sure of its ingredients but I don’t think it has oil as a base. Usually, oil based products are heavier in texture but this one is light and does not leave a residue on my hands.

It can be used both day and night, and I usually just pour a bit into my palm, rub both my palms together then spread it on my face. So far, I’m only using it in the day because I use the Night Conditioner for night use.

This milky conditioner comes in 2 formulations – normal and moisture. Moisture is for those with dry skin. I use the normal one and I have not experienced any problems with it so far. In fact, my skin seems to look and feel better. I don’t know about the whitening properties, but I do experience a brightening of the skin texture. As I am using nearly the whole line so far, I don’t know if it is attributable to just one item in the line.

One thing I don’t like about it though, is the packaging. The bottle is hard plastic and you have to pour the emulsion out through a hole in the top. Its hard to control the amount that comes out, and there is a risk of pouring out too much. Also, when it finishes, it’ll be hard to get the residue out, which is a bit of a waste.

This retails for about RM168 for 100ml. Compared to many other department store brands, I wouldn’t say its very expensive, but if you are used to using something from the pharmacy/drugstore then it does seem expensive. For me, this one works so I will be sticking to it for now.

Pros: Light, Hydrating, Brightening

Cons: Expensive

Review: Skincare: Colonial Dames Vitamin C&E Age Defying Complex and Alpha Lipoic Acid & DMAE Pore Clarifier

July 17, 2007 Paris B 4 Comments

I have been seeing this in Guardian pharmacy every now and then and it piqued my interest. I could not find much information about this online, so I decided to bite the bullet and try it.

According to the Colonial Dames website on this product, this is the claim it makes:

This Exciting New Product contains potent levels of Vitamins C & E PLUS Parsol sunscreen for complete UVA/UVB SPF of 15 to guard your skin against free radical damage and help support the skins natural collagen synthesis. This product lessens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, protects delicate skin, offers intense moisturization, and uses the highest quality Pharmeceutical Grade Vitamins available. Use every day to see, feel and experience the bennefits while it helps guard your skin from UVA and UVB sun damage, slowing the skins aging process and lessening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

I liked the idea of a Vitamin C and E product with SPF suncreen and as I’m not getting any younger, the idea of an age-defying product caught my imagination.

The cream comes in a pump bottle which is hygenic and has a peach tint with light fragrance. When applied, it absorbed quickly and did not feel oily or sticky. I was using this together with the night cream Alpha-Lipoic Acid & DMAE Pore Clarifier.

The night cream too comes in a pump bottle and the fragrance is stronger. The cream has a thick consistency and it feels sticky when first applied to the skin. After a while, when it has been absorbed, it feels less sticky.

This is what the website claims:

You’ve heard about it, read about and seen it on TV, Alpha-Lipoic Acid & DMAE. Now there’s no need to pay outrageous prices for effective levels of Alpha-Lipoic Acid and DMAE. Colonial Dámes, a name trusted for almost 120 years, has it right here with 2% Alpha-Liopic Acid and 3% DMAE to get you dramatic results fast. Reduce pore size while tightening and firming the skin all at a consumer friendly price.

For a week or so, I did not notice anything untoward. I thought a week was still too early to tell if any fine lines were being prevented or if my skin texture was improving. However, what bothered me most was the fact that my face started breaking out and my pores were getting very clogged. I was getting lots of hard bumps under the skin and my skin looked very rough and bumpy.

It was not very noticable at first, but after 2 weeks, it got worse. I stayed on with this product, thinking it might be other elements of my skincare regime. However, as I cut out each item one by one and without any improvement, I finally decided to stop using both these products.

To my surprise, once I stopped using these creams, my pores stopped getting clogged, and my face started getting better. So, the culprit must have been these creams! I checked the ingredients and found that one of the top ingredients was Mineral Oil. I have read many articles about how mineral oil is bad for your skin as it causes clogged pores, but I’d never experienced it myself until now. It was horrifying.

So, RM120 poorer and a lot wiser, I am now nursing my skin back to its former condition. The creams cost RM69 or so each but I got them at a discount. I may just continue using them as a neck cream or hand cream so they don’t go to waste but they are not going anywhere near my face anymore.

I don’t know if they have worked for anyone else or if anyone else has had the same problems I’ve had. I would love to read your comments if you have tried this!
