Oh look! The ticket machine gave me a handful of gold coins!
Or is it chocolate coins?
Or maybe not….
These are the new Malaysian 50 sen coins that have just entered circulation locally. All our coins now look and feel a little different and for some reason, seem to resemble the Euro. Does anyone else get that resemblance? At the current state of the Eurozone, I’m not sure if that’s a clever thing 😛
Some of the coins are golden, but the others are silver. I haven’t seen them all yet though nor have I seen them in circulation much. This was the first time I saw so many in one go, I just had to take a picture 😀
Don’t you think it looks like chocolate gold foil wrapped coins too? I have to restrain myself from taking a bite to see if they are real 😛

I thought I was the only one who thought they look like Euros. LOL. 🙂
Like the new ones cause they’re lighter and easier to carry around. But it’s a pain
trying to get used to identifying them in my purse. And I’m always confused for a split second whenever the storekeeper give me the new coins. 😛

Haha good to know I”m not alone too! 😀 I haven’t had enough of the new coins to really make a difference but I must say that it does take some getting used to especially when receiving change as you have said. I find it so hard to tell at a glance if I’ve gotten the right change, because the coins seem smaller!

Haha they’re cute! So new and sparkling! And yeah they look like the 50-cent coins we have here, though ours aren’t nearly as shiny. My mom is panicking about the state of the Eurozone as well, but since I’m LIVING here myself I don’t feel that much of a difference yet… Or maybe I’m just obtuse haha. Like a frog in warm water.

Well these coins are new. Fresh from the mint 😉 In a while I expect they’d start using like the ones you have. From where we stand, the Eurozone looks shaky. Hopefully it’s worse to look at than to be in.

These coins are really light – like child’s play 😛

I have to agree. I sort of miss the heft and clink of the old coins. I have some really really old coins and those are even heavier. Very nicely vintage though 😉

Coins on your side of the world are so pretty! So shiny too. I didn’t get the euro connection until you pointed it out, maybe too different for me.
Well in UK, we get changes fairly frequently, I can think of so many in the last ten years. The worst was changing the £20, from something elaborate, to essentially a euro note, so boring (sorry Europe!). Ah, but you should check out our “puzzle” coins (google if you’re interested) interesting at the very least. Never though I’d talk so much about coins!
It always does feel weird to have new types of money doesn’t it?
Paris B says
We just got these so I’m still getting to grips with them. Keep handing over wrong change! I remember there was talk of a football offside 50p coin. Was it made? The puzzle coin is sort of cool. I think my remaining UK coins I’m saving will be outdated the next time I visit!

The coins for different denominations are almost same size! O_o Confusing! Have to look closely before handing it over. When I spend with coins nowadays, I try to give out the new coins first! 😀
Hang on to some old 50-sen coins! Getting HTF, except from parking ticket machines, and even they have switched over to the new coins now.

On second thought, the new 50-sen coins reminds me a little of the Gashapon machine tokens! 😉
Paris B says
Not sure what that is, but they sure don’t look like real money 😛
milktea says
Gashapon is the Japanese capsule toy vending machine which is usually found near the kiddie section in Jusco. The token is a lightweight silver coin (not real money) with surface grooves which look similar to the new 50-sen (real money). 1 coin token costs RM5 and you need at least 2 tokens to get a toy. This trend was started by Bandai Inc. of Japan. They are really raking in the dollars, yen, ringgit, from this machine.

Ahhh… now I feel so old for not knowing this LOL!! Thanks for enlightening me 😀
Paris B says
I know!! The worst part is that the new coins of larger denominations are the same size as their older smaller denomination counterparts. The 20sen is the same size as the 10sen and I don’t like the edges on the 50 sen. It looks so unfinished 🙁 I’m holding onto some older coins too. I like the heft

I thought they look like plastic toy money.. Te ones children use to play treasure hunt..Haha..
I prefer the old big 50cents. I like the size and weight of it XD
Paris B says
Oh me too! I will miss the old coins when they’re gone 🙁
