This is a question I get every now and then, which I answer privately. Whenever the subject of double-cleansing comes up, I am bound to be asked this – If I don’t wear makeup, must I still double-cleanse in the evening?

It’s only natural to wonder, because many people do find cleansing a chore. It shouldn’t be, because it really is the start of your skincare routine. A good skincare routine starts with a good cleanse and a good cleanser, because you should ensure that your skin is clean and ready for the rest of your skincare. There isn’t much point in spending a ton of money on the most expensive serum only to stint on your cleanser!

As to the question above, my answer, from the first day, has always been the same. Yes you do.

Why double-cleanse your skin?

The process of double-cleansing was taught to me years before it became popular in the mainstream, by Kanebo, a Japanese brand of skincare. I used to go to their salons for facials, and I learnt firsthand the proper way to double-cleanse – first with a cleansing oil (and how to properly emulsify and rinse off) and then with a foaming cleanser.

The cleansing oil (or cleansing balm), massaged into your dry skin first, will help to lift and dislodge the dirt, debris, oil, grime etc from your skin. You then emulsify it, and rinse off. The process of emulsifying is important, to ensure that you get it all off, so it doesn’t hang around and clog your pores.

How to properly use your cleansing oil or cleansing balm

If you are not already doing so, here’s what you should do to properly emulsify your cleansing oil, and derive the most benefit out of it:
