I have lazy skincare days.

So do you – admit it!

"origins

The fact also, is that I am lazy about using a mask. In fact, while I had loads of time on my hands during our lockdowns, I barely used any masks at all! Contrast this to a couple of years ago, when I was using a mask practically everyday (and seeing results!)

So, being lazy with my skincare routine and being lazy to use a mask, I decided to go all out and be the ultimate lazy-bum – use an overnight mask! I picked the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask with Avocado & Swiss Glacier Water, which I’d had for a while, and want to use up.

Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask

Overnight masks are great! Popularized by Korean skincare brands (Laneige immediately comes to mind!), it took a while before the Western brands caught on. And it seems like they still haven’t quite cottoned on to a good deal.

But Origins did, with the Drink Up Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask.

The Drink Up Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask is infused with glacier water, hyaluronic acid and avocado butter.

Hyaluronic acid as we all know by now, is an ingredient that is capable of binding and retaining high amounts of moisture, which is helpful for maintaining moisture and hydration in our skins. Glacier water is, what I’d deem a fancy term for water, and avocado butter nourishes skin.

Origins claims that this overnight mask will provide your skin with 72 hours of non-stop hydration. That’s 3 whole days! Well, I had to test it out of course 😀

Thick, creamy textured mask

Bearing in mind that this is a mask, I do expect the thicker, more creamy texture of the product. As you can see in the photo, it holds it shape as you squeeze it out of the tube. And it still held its shape about an hour after this photo was taken!

It spread easily on skin however, not feeling too heavy.

It is a leave-on overnight mask after all (often called a ‘sleeping mask’ in Korean skincare) so you apply it on during your evening routine, and go to sleep. It allows you to skip all your skincare should you so wish!

I did not notice it to be oily, but it is very emollient.

However, I do notice it to be quite sticky and tacky, even after it dries. It was quite heavy, so I felt it on my face, but I was fine with it. It’s a mask after all.

But I also noticed how my pillow case would stick to it, or how, when I touch it, it feels tacky to the touch. I wasn’t too happy about it. While I’m not uncomfortable with heavy textures and oils on my skin, I don’t like it when it’s tacky.

By contrast, my experience with other overnight masks I’ve tried, notably Laneige Sleeping Mask and Sulwhasoo Overnight Revitalizing Mask, do not leave a tacky feeling on my skin, and seems to absorb better.

Rather strong scent

While not unpleasant, there is a rather strong, sweet scent that I wasn’t too keen on. If you are sensitive to scent, do take note.

Again, by contrast, while the mask by Sulwhasoo is rather strong in scent, I found the herbal scent to be more soothing to my senses.

Scent is a personal thing, so I don’t rate this as being good or bad. You just have to know your own tolerance level 😀

Does the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask boost hydration for 72 hours?

This would be the million dollar question. Does it do what it claims to do?

I have dry skin so I’d be the prime candidate to notice if my skin was benefiting from the use of the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask.

The next morning, after I woke up and washed off the mask, I noticed that my skin was hydrated and moisturized. That said, it felt similar to how I feel on other mornings. I usually drench my skin with facial oils the night before, and employ the moisture sandwich technique liberally, so I haven’t woken up to dry skin since.

I then spent more of the morning outdoors, training and working with the pup. I got back, and took a shower, and washed my face. OK, my face didn’t feel any drier. That’s a good thing.

I repeated this for 3 days (72 hours), to see if my skin hydration was any more boosted than normal.

Unfortunately, I regret to report that it didn’t feel any different. It wasn’t more plumped, more hydrated or more radiant than it already is or was before.

I’ve monitored this on and off every time I use it, and the results are always the same. It feels nice, but it doesn’t feel any nicer than when I use my normal evening skincare routine (usually involves facial mists, serums, facial oils and moisturizer).

Any effect of feeling ‘nice’ doesn’t quite last the 72 hours.

Who is the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask for?

Perhaps therefore, what the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask is for is for someone who might not be as diligent as I am or have been with my skincare. Perhaps, someone who wants a quick fix, or a quick boost of hydration and moisture.

It might even be suitable for someone who just wants a lazy night routine once or twice a week. Something you can slap on and go to sleep without worrying that you’re not doing enough.

It is by no means a bad product. It does do what it claims to do, which is hydrate your skin overnight. But if you are already very diligent with your skincare and incorporating hydration in your morning and night routines, then maybe this isn’t the best quick-fix product out there.

My personal favourite overnight mask is the Sulwhasoo Overnight Revitalizing Mask. It isn’t tacky, it isn’t heavy, it smells soothing, and most importantly, your skin looks and feels transformed the next morning!

IN A NUTSHELL

The Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask with Avocado & Swiss Glacier Water is a mask you leave on overnight without washing off. I have used it on its own just after cleansing, and also as a heavy moisturizer, after a thin layer of serum just to boost the moisture on my skin. I do notice that my skin is well hydrated the next morning, and as someone with dry skin, I notice these things. However, I find it remains tacky on the skin, and I don’t notice prolonged effects for 72 hours as claimed, and I don’t notice a particularly wow effect as compared to other overnight masks I’ve used. I also don’t quite like the sweet scent but that is a personal issue. This is one of the better overnight masks I’ve tried in the market, but I’m not sold to repurchase.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of overnight hydrating masks I’ve tried. But if you’re looking for alternatives, these might fit the bill.
