If you’re a skincare junkie like I am (I’m no expert, just a junkie!) you might be just like me – raring to try every damn new product out there, experimenting as you go along on your quest for good, if not flawless skin.

But I’m curious. Do you use different skincare products in the day and at night? Most of us, at least those of you who read my blog, would be interested in skincare and beauty anyway, so I’m guessing that a majority will be wont to say yes. 🙂 So, do you?

As far as I’m concerned, I think you’d know my answer to this. I did say I’m a skincare junkie after all 😀

Yes, I do use different skincare products in my daytime routine and in my night routine. I’ve actually been doing this even way before I started blogging – a lot of my skincare habits have changed since I started learning a little more about skincare, but a lot of what I used to do have remained quite entrenched.

You might wonder why I do this, or if it’s because I have all these variety of skincare products on hand that result in me having a different set of skincare for day and night. My reason is two-fold.

I started doing a separate night time routine when I started using night creams and anti-aging products. I preferred using a heavier cream at night, which would naturally supplant my lighter day creams. Also, I was using anti-aging serums like the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum which, as the name implies, is used at night, and that again naturally changed my night skincare routine from day.

I later learned that there are some products that should be used in the night/evening, because that’s when your skin is at rest when you sleep, and also because you aren’t exposed to UV rays. These are products with ingredients like retinol or AHA acids or peels. Products like these leave your skin sensitive to UV rays, which means that you must use a good sunscreen in the day, but it also means that you do not use these products in the day or risk damaging your skin further. And no, you do not need sunscreen at night but if you don’t wear it in the day, EVERY DAY, I’ll come along and smack you upside the head 😛

I also discovered through experience, that a hydrating skincare routine was better for me in the day, when I was likely to be out and about in the heat, and that a repair/comfort/anti-aging skincare routine was better for me in the evening, when I had time to treat my skin, and for the products to comfort and repair.

The other thing I faced when I started experimenting with skincare was how different textures could affect when I used certain skincare. For example, a heavier cream like the Antipodes Vanilla Pod Day Cream is more suited for me to use in the evening where I live, as the daytime heat isn’t conducive to my using it as a day cream. Yet, I like it as a night cream. Ditto the Melvita La Creme – a very nice cream that my skin loves, but one that’s too heavy for use in the day time here.

And then I discovered facial oils, and that’s something that I feel more comfortable using in the evening, because it would just be an unholy mess in the day time heat. Living in the tropics does mess up your skincare somewhat – I can understand why there are people who don’t want to put moisturiser on, although I then say, it’s your skin’s funeral! 😛

Cleansing too isn’t spared. In the evening, I double cleanse but not in the morning, because it really isn’t necessary first thing in the morning. So, the different textures in the skincare products dictate when I use them – heavier textures in my evening routine, and lighter textures in my day time routine.

But I know what you’re wondering.

Of course not!

You can use the same set of skincare in the morning and evening, if it suits you and that’s what you prefer to do. Using a different set can be expensive, although it might eventually work out to be the same, as each product lasts longer. But ultimately, there’s no need to use different skincare for day and night routines. I didn’t for years.

But, I will say that it is worth considering adding in a good serum for the evening routine, and a first cleanse for a proper, thorough cleanse. The primary reason being that when your body is at rest as you sleep, it’s a good time for cell renewal as well, and a good serum will be better for your skin then. Also, for cleanser, a first cleanse, be it cleansing oil or balm, is good to take off the grime of the day and leave your skin cleaner and more refreshed, ready to absorb the products to follow.

You know mine – My routine isn’t very complex, being essentially similar for both day and night, with slight tweaks, but I do use different products. Some are the same e.g. I use the same facial mist or hydrating serum in the day and night, but generally, the other items in the same routine will be different. I actually do like mixing and matching as I go along, but it isn’t necessary at all – just do what makes you comfortable and your skin happy! 🙂

Paris B

If you’re a skincare junkie like I am (I’m no expert, just a junkie!) you might be just like me – raring to try every damn new product out there, experimenting as you go along on your quest for good, if not flawless skin.
