Stila Summer 2008 – Kitten Eyeshadow Palette

I haven’t written much about Stila cosmetics here, but I’m actually a fan of Stila eyeshadows. I don’t have all that many, but I love what I have and some day I’ll get around to reviewing them! 😛

I used to like Stila eyeshadow palettes that came in a long slim case with 6 colours, rather like the one you see in my Nude Eyeshadows picture. Stila hasn’t come out with these for a few years now, focusing on round palettes instead with 3 or 4 colours only.

I’m happy to note that the Stila Summer 2008 collection features my favourite form of Stila eyeshadow palette with some really pretty looking colours!

According to the Stila website, the Kitten eyeshadow palette features the following colours (from right to left of the picture):-

ray (a shimmering golden copper) – a perfect shadow to accent a healthy summer glow
mystic (a shimmering aqua blue) – a bold shade for summer soirees
kitten (shimmering nude pink) – a stila top-seller that works wonders as a base or a fresh highlight
wheat (pearlescent beige) – a perfect base for a bronzed eye
prize (soft gold shimmer) – can be paired with any shade in the palette; adds that golden sheen
sun (shimmering golden peach) – a sunny sparkle for day or night

I love Kitten although many find it too frosty or shimmery. I’d love to check this palette out once it gets to Malaysia. I’ll update when I do see it.
They used to retail for RM125 but I’m expecting it to cost something like RM135 or RM140 now? This Kitten palette is US$40 on Stila Cosmetics website if you are in the USA.

Why use neutral eyeshadow?

I received an Isetan mailer recently which had pictures of the new Bobbi Brown Nude eye and lip palette (RM210). I also saw the palette in person last week and the shadows were 4 similar colored nude or neutral eyeshadows. It reminded me of a question I used to ask before – Why would anyone want to use neutral eyeshadow or eyeshadows that look nude? Isn’t the purpose of eyeshadow having colour on the eyes?

I’ve since worked out the answer for myself. There are some days or some occasions when having other colours on your eyes won’t do. Examples are strict work places or serious events or even just when you want to be taken seriously like if you have to attend meetings or meet new customers or clients or business partners. If you are in a serious sort of job, having beautifully made up eyes with coloured eyeshadow just won’t do because people just don’t take you seriously otherwise (unfortunate but true). Stila: Mandarin Mist collection – limited edition

Stila Cosmetics specialises in cute girly makeup and I do have a touch of fondness for their makeup line. I like the soft texture of their eyeshadows and the rather more muted yet wearable colours available.

Stila scored a hit with their baked makeup last year – baked eyeshadow trios and blush duos and they look to be repeating their success this year, with the launch of a new fragrance – Mandarin Mist, and a new Mandarin Mist collection to compliment it.

Mandarin Mist fragrance – A light, crisp citrus fragrance with notes of mimosa and yuzu fruit. Sounds positively delish!

Mandarin Mist eyeshadow trio: Cool – High shimmer eyeshadow. Light pink, cool taupe and rich brown.

Mandarin Mist eyeshadow trio: Warm – High shimmer eyeshadow. Peach, Warm rose and golden brown. I would be keen on this one.

Mandarin Mist cheek colour duo – Soft peach and rosy bronze blush duo to highlight and contour cheeks.

I called up the Stila counter in 1 Utama and was told that it is not here in Malaysia yet but will be expected maybe in August 2007. This is Stila’s limited edition summer collection so expect it to sell out quickly. Last year’s did. The eyeshadow trios and blush previously retailed for RM120 each, so expect similar or same prices this time.

Exclusively for you, here are pictures of what you can expect from Stila cosmetics in their summer collection for 2007!!

3 shadow trios, set up in a pressed-in/emboss-ish sundial design… Acapulco (white/green/brown), Mazatlan (gold, brown bronze, brown with silver shimmer) and Vallarta (pink, mauve, bronzy pink).

Then there’s supposedly a new formula of their bronzing powder… 3 lip glazes – Pina Colada (yellow gold), Spiced Rum (brown/bronze) and Daiquiri (golden pink).

And then there’s Sun Shimmer Dry Oil that smells sort of more baby powder-ish than tropical, but it gives a pretty golden shimmer.

The 3 Eyeshadow trios remind me of Estee Lauder Pure Colour trios they once had. The ironic thing is that Estee Lauder has just sold Stila so… its just odd 😛 The colours are kind of meh though. The only one that strikes me is the neutral trio. I just hope the texture is soft because they look rather hard.

I’m not a fan of lipglazes but the golden pink one looks nice.

All in all, Stila Summer is a dud for me – whew! LOL… Eyeshadow trios used to retail for something like RM120 so expect similar prices this time round.
