Your skincare routine begins when you cleanse: 8 Cleansers I love that I buy over and over and why a good cleanser is important

selection of facial cleansers

In the past, when I first started having some interest in skincare, I came across a quote by someone that said “Spend on what you leave on and save on what you wash off” It was something of that ilk.

Essentially, the idea was that when we were balancing our budget for skincare, we should spend more on products like serums and creams, to get the best possible quality since we were leaving it on our skin; and we could save on a product like cleansers, because we’d just be washing them off.

I thought it made sense, so it was something I practised for a while. I’d buy cleansers from the pharmacy, and I’d not consider spending too much money on them. Something that was foamy and cleaned my skin was sufficient, never mind what special ingredients might be in it, because I was going to wash it off anyway.

Much later, I realised that I was wrong about this.

Aside from the blue tint of Skin Creamery The Balm, there’s no need to be blue this new year

skin creamery the balm

I am a fan of the South African brand Skin Creamery. Their products are simple (insofar as a product can be simple) but they work well for me if I want something uncomplicated. They’re gentle on my skin, and do an amazing job at being a simple and effective natural skincare.

When I first came across their (then) new Skin Creamery The Balm, I was intrigued.

I am a big big fan of May Lindstrom’s Blue Cocoon, and this jar of blue balm made me wonder if it was similar in some way (at a fraction of the price!) 🙂

For an oil cleanser that won’t strip your skin, end your day with the Skin Creamery Oil-Milk Facial Cleanser

Occasionally I stumble on a brand where I seem to love everything they put out. I love it better when they are small brands that are off the main grid because it’s always fun to discover something new. One such brand is Skin Creamery. When I tried the Skin Creamery Oil-Milk Facial Cleanser, I therefore expected to love it.

I’d been very impressed by 2 items I’d tried from this South African brand before this – their Everyday Cream and their Facial Hydrating oil. I still use them both and I’m still as impressed by them today as I was before. It’s taken me a while to expand my experience with their products, but this is certainly a case of better late than never!

The reason it’s taken me a while to get round to this, is because I have been a little averse to using oil cleansers. I learnt about double-cleansing through oil cleansers, but I also learnt from experience, that they are incredibly drying to my skin. Over the years, I have come across the odd cleansing oil or oil cleanser (slight difference) that do not dry or dehydrate your skin. They are few but they are available – and happily, I can now add another to that list! 😀

Let’s get your oil on! The Facial Oils I love, like and am on the fence about

September 8, 2017 Paris B 24 Comments

Facial oils are really hot right now. So many brands are coming out with their version of facial oils, and you know it’s a hit product when even mainstream brands get in on the act. I’d actually used rosehip oil many years ago, as a teen, but wasn’t quite educated on the best way to use it, so I really hated it because it was so damned sticky! I returned to facial oils a few years back, when I found that my skin was turning drier, and with a little trial and error, have worked out the best way to use them. I now love facial oils, and I’m always looking out for the next one to try!

I thought I’d give you a run down on the oils I’ve used (some older ones won’t be included as I no longer have or use them, so I can’t talk about them) to give you an idea of what sort of oils I like, and how I use them. It is non-exhaustive, as I have more to showcase in time to come!

facial oils

Just briefly, despite what we might think, oils are actually good for our skin, not only dry skin, but even oily or combination skin types can benefit. You just have to find the right oil for your skin and that you feel most comfortable using. Naturally, drier skin types will benefit more from using facial oils, as it helps to rebalance your lipids and nourish your skin, so it stays more supple and moisturised.

Does it take the place of a moisturiser or a serum? Personally speaking, I’ll say no. I use a moisturiser or cream over my oils to seal them in. Opinions vary on this, where some people say that the oils go on last, but I’m sticking to my way, because it works for me both physically, and logically. If you have oily skin however, you may just want to end off with the oil and skip moisturiser, as anything else on top may feel heavy.

So, here are some oils that I use and how I use them, to give you an idea of where to start. Settle in 🙂 Please feel free to ask or share in the comments. I’m happy to talk about facial oils to anyone! 😀
