Bag Lust: The Hermes Birkin – 3 Reasons You May Not Want One

December 18, 2015 Paris B 35 Comments

As much as I personally lust after the Hermes Birkin – yes I’m one of those who do – I do not currently own one, nor is there one in my forseeable future, due to its prohibitive cost. Thank you for nothing, diving RM. However, my good friend and bag buddy LeGeeque recently got one, and shared some good reasons with me why it may not be the bag of every bag afficionado’s dreams, as it were. So I got her to write it down and share it with you. It pays to be well-informed. Who knows when an opportunity will arise, eh? ~ PB

The mere mention of the prized and elusive Hermes Birkin bag conjures up a plethora of responses. If you’re a bag aficionado, there’s a likelihood that the Birkin is your Holy Grail. If you aren’t, you will still likely raise your brows, because most people will have heard of its exclusivity. The Birkin might be the Holy Grail for some, but it might not be yours, necessarily so. So, I’m here to debunk some myths of the Birkin and tell you what you should consider, if you are saving your pennies (or realistically, dollars) for this prized bag.

To put things into a little context, I recently got my greasy little hands on an Hermes Birkin. It’s what some Birkin aficionados would term as the poor (wo)man’s Birkin. It’s the beginner/entry level bag. Size – 35. Leather – Togo (thankfully, which I’ll get into in a bit). Gold hardware.

After carrying it consistently for about a month, I think I’m ready to write this piece.

Bag Lust: My eye is on the adorable little Hermes Picotin bucket tote

August 28, 2015 Paris B 16 Comments

I haven’t dwelt on my favourite subject matter for a while – bags! Actually I haven’t dwelt on the subject much since I stopped blogging on weekends. With so few blogging days a week, I found it hard to squeeze in everything I wanted, yet I was loathe to break the rhythm heh…

But hey, what’s life if not full of variety and lately, I’ve found my thoughts drifting rather dangerously to that of the adorable Hermes Picotin.

Well, I say dangerously, because we all know what it means when the H-brand is mentioned right? Nope, pricey doesn’t quite begin to describe it 😀 But try ‘luxury’ as well 🙂

The Picotin comes in a few sizes, and its unstructured, rather casual design is inspired by the feed bags for horses. It’s shaped like a bucket and the smaller sizes are handheld totes. The larger versions can be slung on the shoulder.

It’s understated, quiet and yet looks casually chic and that must be the reason I’ve found myself drawn to it, time and time again.

The Hermes Garden Party Bag fires up the bag lust!

June 15, 2014 Paris B 18 Comments

I haven’t talked bags in a while here at MWS. My last bag lust was over 6 months ago! Gosh! It’s not to say I haven’t been lusting – I have and I still am, I just never got round to talking about them 😉 For those who may not know, my true penchant is for bags. Makeup comes a distinct 3rd after skincare 😀 And for many of us “bag ladies” the ultimate of bags would usually be the Hermes Birkin or Kelly. Well, whose isn’t eh? 😉

However, I recently came across one of Hermes’ less popular bags and like it is when stars align, I found myself falling head over heels in lust with it.

The bag in question is the Hermes Garden Party bag which comes in 2 sizes – small and medium. The design is fairly unobtrusive and simple and some might even argue, too simple. But it appeals to me in a way I never expected it to.

The Garden Party bag comes in a full leather option as I have pictured here and also in a canvas option with leather trim. I don’t particularly go for canvas bodies for bags, so my pick would have to be the full leather version.

My Hermes dream bag

April 4, 2008 Paris B 12 Comments

Look what I spotted at the M boutique at The Gardens (run by the Melium group).

A Birkin bag!

The metallic green one on the far right is a real beaut. However, I found it heavy, the edges were a bit rough, and the clasp and flap were a real pain to do up and undo. It also cost upwards of RM2,500. The whole bag is leather (including the lining) which might explain the price, but still… I did not think it worth it. The sales assistant told me it was an Hermes. Really? If it is, I think I’m quite disappointed because I did not expect it to look and feel this way. Besides, since when was an Hermes Birkin bag so “cheap”?

The Birkin bag is a signature Hermes bag which I have been eyeing for a long long time. Last I knew they were RM40k a bag (or thereabouts) and a couple of years wait list to boot. When did Hermes drop their prices this drastically? Does anyone know?

Anyway, at RM40k for a bag from an Hermes boutique, I think I’ll be putting that money towards a car 😉

Still, a girl can dream can’t she?

I’m away for the weekend so do excuse me if I do not respond to your comments or enquiries in the interim. I’m off to explore what Singapore has to offer but as its a working trip, its hard to say if I’ll have time to do any shopping!

UPDATE: I found out that these bags are not Hermes but M Concept. I have no idea what M Concept is but I think its an in house brand of the Melium Group. So sorry to disappoint all but I knew it was too good to be true for Hermes to be this “cheap”! 🙂

Stay beautiful,
