Scrumptious Weekend Vol. 29 : Getting a little Cointreau, Cointreau, Cointreau-versial

December 8, 2013 Paris B 17 Comments

A week ago, I was invited by a friend to go sip some Cointreau (pronounced ‘kwan-trou’) and find out a little more about it. It was a purely social event but I had so much fun, I thought heck, let’s just blog it anyway. Partly because it’s fun to not have obligations to blog about something, but want to do so for the fun of it. Partly so I’d remember a recipe or two of the cocktails mixed that day that passed pretty much in a blur after a while LOL!

The interesting bit was getting to meet also, the brand representative, who is a 6th generation Monsieur Cointreau. For some reason that amuses me. How many of us can walk up to a brand and say “My great-great-great-great-great-grandad created that!”

Cointreau is a clear liqueur distilled from a mixture of bitter and sweet orange peels and turns cloudy when mixed with water or when the temperature drops so, it’ll turn cloudy when water or ice is introduced. It’s really fascinating, if things like this fascinate you. It sure did me, because I was familiar with the square squat bottle but not familiar with the drink myself. There’re a couple of recipes I picked up below, if you’d like to whip something up for the festive season 😛

Come Holiday Shopping Down Under and a-Waltzing Mathilda with me

November 24, 2013 Paris B 58 Comments

My timing was so “good” that when I got back last week, it was quite late at night and I fell headlong into work the next day and was pretty busy the whole week. So, unpacking has been slow and you know how that’s like right? Slack off for a bit to unpack and suddenly the suitcase sits there for months on end. Reason why you should always unpack the minute you get home. I eventually found some time to and I thought I’d show you what came home with me from Down Under.

shopping in australia

Let me preface this little haul by telling you that many things in Australia are pricey, especially if you’re talking beauty products. I found out that Revlon, for example, is sold at similar prices dollar-dollar with prices locally which means that with the exchange rate, a Revlon Lip Butter could cost you RM65. Top up a little more locally and you might as well walk away with an Estee Lauder lipstick that costs RM80.

You also saw how marked up the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palete was in my previous post, so, when it came to beauty buys, I barely bought any. I looked of course, in the beauty halls of Mecca Maxima and Kit Cosmetics and spent a nice time trawling the aisles of Priceline but I eventually walked away with very few beauty buys. Instead, I spent most of my shopping money on candles, candles and erm… candles and groceries! 😀

Travel Tales: Putting up at The Darling Hotel, Sydney Australia

November 13, 2013 Paris B 22 Comments

Sigh. This was supposed to have gone up yesterday but you know how it is with technology. You never know when it’ll trip you up and leave you with egg on your face! That said, maybe it was providential because I actually didn’t have a post scheduled for today haha! Guess it all works out eh?

For my quick trip to Sydney, I was put up at The Darling Hotel, which is a new hotel attached to The Star, a casino and shopping complex down on Pyrmont St, near Darling Harbour. I’m told that at time of writing, it is just 18 months old! I’m not sure if I’d be able to put up here again (far too out of my budget!) but it was a nice experience.

This here is the Junior Suite and the bed was humongous! Also very high. I felt like the Princess and the Pea as i climbed up lol! The room is pretty large, with a sitting area, a small kitchenette and importantly, a Nespresso machine! YES!

Scrumptious Weekend Vol. 28: Homemade Chicken Stock – A Building Block of cooking

September 29, 2013 Paris B 25 Comments

I haven’t been updating my “Scrumptious Series” for a while now, not because I haven’t been eating or cooking anything scrumptious, but because blogging on weekends take it out of me. So, I’ve decided to be all flexi-bendy and reposition this as a Scrumptious Weekend instead.

To get back into the groove, I thought I’d share my weekend project from last week – homemade chicken stock. I posted a picture of this on Instagram and had some requests to share how I did it so here it is.

homemade chicken stock recipe

I have recently developed a taste for my homemade tom yam soup, and soups in general and I wanted to have ready stock on hand for when I want to add that robustness of flavour in my cooking e.g. sauces, soups, stews etc without using just plain water and seasoning. So, I set about to make my own stock. I don’t like the overly MSGed ready to buy stock we get in the supermarkets, and if I wanted something high quality, it’d cost me a lot… or I could make it myself! 😀 It’s not hard, and it’s very handy to have in the freezer for when that soupy craving kicks in 🙂

I modified mine from this recipe (2nd one) but I pretty much made it based on what I had on hand, and I cooked it longer so you can be a little more adventurous.
