When you achieve that highlight “on fleek” on a budget : 3 Wallet-friendly Highlighters

March 20, 2017 Paris B 23 Comments

I showed you a very pretty but also pretty pricey highlighter last week that had everyone sighing wistfully. I’ve realised that many higher end brands like to produce limited edition highlighter powders that are beautifully designed and embossed. It must be the metallic shine that lends to an intricate design, and it is also more attention grabbing.

Yet, like many of you reading my blog I’m not terribly skilled at wearing highlighter (if you are, this is no insult, I promise!). The learning curve is less steep than learning to wear bronzer (you only risk looking like a metallic robot vs falling face first in cocoa powder) but there is a learning curve.

If you don’t quite feel up to dropping RM200 or more on a product you aren’t sure about, I have a few budget-friendly alternatives for you!

Highlighters perform the opposite function of bronzer or contouring products. You use a highlighter product on the high points of your face, where the light would hit to give the impression of light. Done in a subtle manner, you can create an illusion of higher cheekbones or a sharper nose, or just to give skin a subtle lit-from-within look. Overdo it, and hello, shiny robot 😛

I’m not personally crazy about using highlighter powders. I do tend to use blush that have a touch of shimmer or shine to them, so adding on more shine can be counter-productive. Also, I don’t necessarily work in an environment that will encourage you shining like a beacon LOL! 😀 But I keep the odd highlight powder on hand, because it’s useful, and hell, they’re pretty 😛

That said, I found a couple in my stash that I’d peg as being budget-friendly options that do a very good job. So, I wanted to share, especially if you’re interested to try a highlighter powder, without dropping the big bucks! 🙂

I was so moved by the Chanel Codes Subtils eyeshadow palette, I did a FOTD post!

February 23, 2017 Paris B 10 Comments

Truth to tell, I haven’t been very excited about many new makeup items for a while. But for some reason, this, rather unassuming, eyeshadow palette from Chanel grabbed my attention. It is the Codes Subtils 278 Les 4 Ombres Multi-Effect Quadra Eyeshadow Quad (RM230 | US$61), and it is part of the Coco Codes collection for Spring 2017 and is, rather unfortunately, limited edition.

I managed to hunt down one very recently (it was sold out when I first wanted it, but if you call around, you may still be able to find one) and I just knew that I’d have to give it a very quick shout out, because if you love neutral eyeshadow with just a hint of smokiness, you will be head-over-heels for this one.

Like all the post-2014 Chanel Les 4 Ombre eyeshadow palettes, the quality is sublime. The texture is soft, pigmented and easy to blend without fall out. The shimmer is understated and flattering, and the colours are rich (or as rich as they can be). Like Poesie, I can see myself wearing this nearly everyday and if I were the sort to hoard back-ups, this is a palette I’d have multiple back-ups of.

I suppose you could say that I love it! 😛 I don’t have a lot to say without gushing, so I’ll be sharing a quick look I did to show you why I love this palette so much.

Oh Catrice Blush Artist Palette! I love my luxury products but for a blush, CorALL I Need!

September 28, 2016 Paris B 16 Comments

Apologies for the enforced break. We had some technical problems in the past few days that had the website looking a little screwy, so I couldn’t work on it. Little things you know. But I was kind of glad because it allowed me a few days to breathe and just get back into the swing of things!

Not long ago, I showed you a pretty blush from affordable brand, Catrice. It was pretty to wear and pretty to look at. But it had its shortcomings. Well, let me now show you yet another blush from Catrice, that is not only pretty to wear and pretty to look at, it has no real shortcomings that I know of! Now, for a picky blush user like me, that’s quite a feat!

This rather battered looking palette is the Catrice Blush Artist palette in 020 Corall I Need that is basically a blush trio. There are 3 shades I believe, a bronzey trio and a rosy pink trio besides this coral trio. I don’t know very much about availability, but all I will say is this – if you see this at your local Catrice counter, buy it. Do not pass go! You will regret not getting it I promise! 😀

Not sure if the Catrice Illuminating Blush is worth your pennies? Coral Me Maybe, I’ll tell you!

June 6, 2016 Paris B 4 Comments

I told you I was on a cheap and cheerful makeup kick wasn’t I?! Well, meet my newest cheap and cheerful makeup purchase that… you guessed it, cost me under RM20 (Approx. US$5) I’m almost bummed that I didn’t blog about the Catrice Illuminating Blush sooner so I could steal Tine’s title for this one LOL! It just CALLS out for it! Call… geddit?

I got this at a wee discount, but even at its full price, you won’t break a sweat toddling over to the cashier counter. I only really got it because I liked how it looked in the pan. As much as I try to be level-headed and practical, sometimes, aesthetics gets the better of me, and I find myself buying a product simply because of how it looks. Thank goodness it was a RM20 product and not RM200! *coughsulwhasoocough* LOL! 😀

There are about 3 colours available (I think!) and while I usually veer towards pinks for blushes, I wasn’t taken by the other 2 shades on offer. So, I went with the Catrice Illuminating Blush in Coral Me Maybe, a coral-pink that in the tester looked bland, but which looked pretty in the sealed pan. So, I took it home. What did I have to lose anyway, but RM20! Little did I know, I’d appreciate it so much more than a RM200 blush! Oh my! 😀
