MAC Dame Edna Wisteria Eyeshadow Trio dupes?

January 21, 2009 Paris B 10 Comments

Most of the new MAC collections have not excited me. I’m just not a MAC girl, sorry to say. This explains the lack of posts about MAC on this blog. However, when I saw the Dame Edna collection, I had to laugh. I remember watching Dame Edna on comedy skits on British tv on cold winter nights and he/she was hilarious!

I love that MAC put the trademark Dame Edna spectacles on the case of the Dame Edna collection – It is just fitting. Since I’m not a MAC girl, I can’t bring myself to buy anything from there. However, having seen pictures of the collection, the Wisteria eyeshadow trio seems to call my name. Over the weekend, while I was passing a MAC store, my eye was drawn to the bright red words “DAME EDNA” over the store front, and I knew I had to walk in to take a look.

MAC Dame Edna collection

To my surprise, I actually had a good shopping experience at MAC Cosmetics! I enjoyed chatting to the makeup artist/sales person at MAC Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and I enjoyed playing with the Dame Edna collection and talking about the upcoming MAC collections with him. He was friendly and helpful and showed me various items without once being rude or dismissive – it made me rethink my earlier impression of MAC – seriously. If you are thinking of buying MAC, I recommend Stephan from MAC Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. Tell him the lady who was discussing Hello Kitty with him sent you 😉 That is, if he remembers LOL…

Anyway, after seeing the Dame Edna collection and the Wisteria eyeshadow trio (RM125) in person, I knew there was no chance of me buying it. I have owned MAC Lustre eyeshadows before and after playing with the trio, I was reminded that MAC eyeshadows are just not my style. So, I thought to myself, “Hey, why not dupe it since you won’t be buying it anyway?” And you know what? I agreed with myself in a split personality sort of way, and went off to trawl through my stash.

Review: Beautilicious Arch it Right Eyebrow kit

November 20, 2008 Paris B 23 Comments

If eyes are the windows to the soul then the eyebrows must be the frames. Whilst I am happy to be blessed with relatively tame yet dark enough brows, not many others share the same fate. Hence the need for eyebrow grooming kits.

Beautilicious arch it right eyebrow kit

Local drugstore brand Beautilicious has one in the Arch it Right eyebrow kit. What you get in a slim compact kit is a set of 4 eyebrow stencils, a tweezer, a brow brush and 2 brow colours to fill in your brows after taming and shaping them.

The kit comes with 4 eyebrow stencils. Now, I’m not an advocate of stencils of any sort but when it comes to brows, I must say these are a great idea. What it does is give you an idea of the approximate shape your brow should take so you can tweeze away the extra hairs. What you should NOT do is follow the stencil religiously to the extent that you end up looking perpetually surprised. Remember, we are all different and no kit can make us all the same.

The stencils in the Beautilicious Arch it Right eyebrow kit are of very soft silicone. This helps it conform to the contour of your face which makes it easier for you to see how best to shape your brow. There are 4 included – Natural, Fine, Super Fine and Full depending on how you like your brows to look. I prefer the Natural or Full look. The shape of the stencil is quite natural with a gradual arch so you don’t look like Bozo the clown.

Save or Splurge: Stila Lip Glaze vs Beautilicious Glossy Jams lipgloss pen

November 12, 2008 Paris B 19 Comments

Do you save or splurge on a lipgloss?

If you are a regular here on My Women Stuff, you’ll know that Paris B is no fan of lip gloss. I find it too goopy, sticky and too lacking in color. But that’s not to say that I don’t have any! One of the styles of lipglosses I like come in the clicky pens. You know those pens where you turn the bottom and swipe on the colour with a brush? The bottom makes a click-click sound hence the reason I call them clicky pens 😛

Stila Lip Glaze Beautilicious Glossy Jams

I happen to have clicky pen lip glosses from 2 brands and interestingly, one is higher end – Stila Lip Glaze and the other is low end – Beautilicious Glossy Jams. I thought it would be interesting to see how each fared against the other.

Packaging

Both lip glosses come in similar looking clicky pens. Both have transparent bodies so you can see the colour of the gloss easily and both have a brush applicator. I like brush applicators. I find it gives me better control. Both have a similar problem of too much gloss coming out of the brush if you turn the base too much.

PB’s Verdict: Neither wins. They are both similar.

Price

Stila : RM85 for 2.4ml = RM35.42 / ml

Beautilicious: RM25.90 for 3ml = RM8.63/ml

PB’s Verdict: Beautilicious wins in the price department

Review: Makeup: Beautilicious Smokey Eye palette

October 20, 2008 Paris B 10 Comments

Beautilicious Smokey Eye Palette

Beautilicious calls their Smokey Eye palette – Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. Hands up anyone who can sing the song… or at least that one line! LOL… Cheesey songs aside, I must say that this smokey eye palette is very commendable.

Like the Stila Smokey Eye Palette, this one too comes with instructions. The difference is that where Stila’s talks to you, the Beautilicious one lets you read the instructions yourself (but Stila has paper instructions too). Other than that, there isn’t much else that’s different!

Packaging

The Beautilicious Smokey Eye palette comes in a cardboard palette with 1 concealer, 1 beige shadow, 1 grey shadow and 1 black shadow and a sponge-brush applicator. The palette is slim and compact and resembles Benefit’s Big Beautiful Eyes palette. I like the slimness of the palette and the large mirror on the inside, although I’m not too enamoured with the picture on it. I’d rather see graphics than images, but that’s me. Also, I’d rather it did not come in a cardboard sleeve because that’s redundant packaging since the palette is shrink-wrapped anyway.

Performance

The concealer in the palette comes in just one shade. I honestly thought it might be too dark for me, but to my surprise, it was not. I reckon it will suit those with fair to medium skintones but if you have very tanned or dark skin, it will not be for you. The concealer is also surprisingly really nice for something that comes in a palette and something I was not expecting to rave about. The texture is smooth and creamy it covers dark circles decently and best of all, isn’t oily and does not settle into fine lines!Continue Reading
