Yesterday I took the lift up to my office with 2 other cleaning ladies. They were quiet the whole trip until the doors opened. Then one of them turned to me and said (in Malay)
“You look like a Japanese!”
The other one immediately countered with:
“No! You look like a Korean!”
I was bemused because I am neither. I am a 3rd generation Malaysian of Chinese heritage. From what we could trace, the line has been pretty unbroken so it always amuses me to have people mistake me for a Japanese (in the past) or a Korean (presently).
I think the perception is such because I’m quite fair, and I do a full face of makeup every day. Lately, I’ve learned to finally apply mascara that doesn’t make me look like a panda in 2 hours and which opens up my eyes a lot more giving me the impression of having larger eyes than I really do. From what I see and have been told (having never been to Japan or Korea yet) the Korean and Japanese ladies place a lot of emphasis on their looks and take great pains to put on their makeup everyday. I read somewhere once that a Japanese woman would wake up a full 2 hours earlier than she has to, just to make sure her “face” is put on for the day. Its impressive to me because I’d rather spend the 2 hours sleeping!
By contrast, many women on the street here don’t bother too much with makeup. Many office ladies I have seen only use powder and some lipstick and that’s it.
So I think that’s part of the reason why I’m being mistaken for a Japanese/Korean everywhere. The other is probably due to my rather wide face that is reminiscent of Korean lineage. All pretty fun until traders try to fleece me because they think I’m a tourist!! 😀
So, do people confuse you with someone form another heritage?

I have a horrible hankering to buy me some knee high boots. Ok maybe not knee-high, but calf high.
This whole obsession started last year when I was at the MO Outlet and they had branded calf-high boots for sale. They were odd sizes (either for the large footed or for cinderella size feet) but they were so cheap! I’d have forced myself into one if I could, and I did. Well, I didn’t have to force. I actually found one that fit me.
It fit me at the foot and ankle, but sadly, did not fit me at the calf. Apparently, contrary to what I think, my calves were not large enough and there was a gap between the boot and my skin. So, on that one odd note, I reluctantly put the boots aside. I mean, we are talking only RM290 for branded leather knee high boots! Was I crazy for putting them back? YES!!
The next question of course is, where on earth am I going to be wearing these calf/knee high boots in our hot Malaysian weather? My feet would melt in them. Or so I thought.
However, lately I’ve been wearing boots (just past my ankle high ones only) with pants to work, as all my pumps committed mass suicide. I don’t understand why but many heels dropped off so I was left looking at my boots which I’d hardly worn. They are by Clarks and possibly one of the most (if not the most!) comfortable shoes I own! There is a 1.5″ to 2″ heel on them and I can RUN in them to catch a bus (but I don’t do buses lol!) I could walk all day in them.
That’s when I realised that my feet don’t melt in boots! I wear socks or stockings, but even then, I can survive! The thing about ankle high boots is that they look odd if you wear a skirt. It looks like its not quite all there. On the other hand, I think calf/knee high boots are so sexy! Yes, slutty too, possibly, but sexy nonetheless!
I’d love to wear them like these 2 pictures I found. Take note of the one with the skirt. Damn! I want!
Ok, so I’ve made a pact with my fellow boot-lover that if I see anymore calf/knee high boots that are comfortable, we’ll be getting one each (don’t you chicken out on me now!) She could possibly wear it in the more reasonable weather of England, and I couldn’t, but who cares really eh?
These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do…

Double-cleaning is a concept which seems to be found mostly in Asian brands or asian skincare routines. I haven’t seen the other big “western” brands promoting this method of cleansing yet.
What is double cleansing? Well essentially, its exactly what it says. You cleanse your skin twice. The first time, with cleansing oil and the second, with a gel or foaming cleanser.
It was explained to me by Kanebo as thus:
The reason given was because cleansing oils help remove the residual makeup and oils that accumulate on your skin and in your pores throughout the day. Using oil on your skin is an alien concept as it was to me when I first heard about it. However, its not as alien now that I use it. It removes makeup a treat, especially waterproof mascara and the Bobbi Brown long-wearing gel eyeliners. After using a cleansing oil, my skin usually feels cleaner. I’ll write about cleansing oils again some time.
After using cleansing oils, the next step using cleansing gel/foam is to ensure that your skin is really clean and free from impurities so that your moisturers and toners can absorb better.
This double step process is supposed to help make your skin clearer. So, does it work?
I have tried it religiously for a while. I’d double cleanse at night, because I’ve had makeup on the whole day. I’d use a cleansing oil first then a foam cleanser. Yes, my skin did feel cleaner and yes, I’d find myself with a clean cottonpad when I applied my apple cider vinegar toner. No residual makeup at all.
But I found that depending on the foam cleanser I used, I might end up with a drier face than I liked especially around the eyes and cheeks. So, for now, I don’t double-cleanse that often. I do it about 3 times a week, just to make sure that my skin really gets clean (and usually on working days when I wear makeup) but the other 4 days, I’d use either the cleansing oil or the foam cleanser by itself.
Is there a particular brand I recommend? The answer is no. For me, any combination of any cleansing oil and foaming cleanser works just as well. If you are prone to oily skin though, then you may want to double-cleanse daily for it does help remove the oilies at the end of the day. But if you have dry or combination skin, you risk making your skin drier. So, I woudln’t double-cleanse that often.
All said, I would recommend this method of cleansing your skin and I think the Japanese got something right with this! Their skin is amazing!
