Finally! The Breakdown of What is in that Epic Cosmetics Travel Kit!

June 6, 2012 Paris B 72 Comments

A while ago, I showed you a birds eye view of the epically large cosmetics kit that I packed ostensibly for travel. Firstly, I’d just like to say that if I were truly travelling for work or even for a holiday, I never pack a kit this massive. My travel cosmetics kits fit in 1 pouch and usually look something like this.

what is in the epic cosmetics trvael kit

This time however, I was headed home for my brother’s wedding and I knew I had to look good so I could not risk a breakout or reactions to new products, and I also knew that I’d be sharing all sorts of stuff with my sister who had warned me that she wasn’t packing anything so could I just bring extra? Ah yes, sisters 🙂

So I packed full sizes of almost everything and packed exact products of skincare I had been using at the time. The bag turned out to be extremely large and probably weighed about 5kg 😛 I could be exaggerating, I’m not sure. But here’s what went in there.

Caring for your Leather Bags : Control Humidity and Keep mould away with Silica Gel

January 29, 2012 Paris B 37 Comments

When I was spring cleaning at the end of last year, I had a bit of a scare when I checked on a couple of my leather bags. I spotted bits of mould starting to take hold, and it absolutely freaked me out! After I had gotten rid of the mould on the bags the best I could, I realised that it could be due to the high humidity where I live (the tropics) and the room where the bags were stored.

So I looked around for ways to control the humidity and barring buying a dehumidifier and storing bags in a specially built cabinet, one recommended method was to use silica gel.

silica gel control humidity

Most of us will be familiar with silica gel – it is those white little sachets you sometimes see in food packaging or new bags or wallets that clearly say “Do Not Eat”. The purpose of these sachets is as a desiccant where the silica gel within absorbs the humidity in the air and keeps the products fresh for longer. When humidity decreases, the incidence of mould similarly decreases. There are a myriad of uses of silica gel but what I’m primarily telling you about today is about the use of this silica gel to reduce the incidence of mould on your leather bags.

Ask & Answer: Where can I buy a makeup train case?

December 11, 2009 Paris B 2 Comments

traincase

Anon, a reader emailed to ask this on my post about makeup storage:-

You said you don’t use a traincase to store your makeup. Why don’t you? And where can I buy a train case?

Well Anon, You got it right. I did say I don’t use a traincase to store my makeup. I’d done it before but I found it impractical. I’m not saying its not a good idea – it is! But for me, its only a good idea if you want to keep away your cosmetics every time after using it due to space constraints, or if you travel a lot with your cosmetics, like makeup artists do.

For the everyday individual, I would suggest boxes and plastic or wooden drawers as a better storage option because the majority of us will not be toting our cosmetics around.

Using a train case too takes up a lot of space – believe it or not. Try opening one up and you’ll know what I mean. Once you expand all those tiered trays, the train case has a huge footprint and might just take up more space than a box or drawer set. Still, you can see and take everything you want in one go, so much depends on what you want 🙂

Makeup Storage Tips: How do you store yours?

November 3, 2009 Paris B 65 Comments

I had some recent requests from readers and friends who were curious as to how my dressing table looks and as to how to store makeup and skincare items. Reader Gette wrote to me:-

Hi Paris!

Ever since I’ve gotten into this cosmetics thing, my bathroom shelf is overflowing with my skincare, make-up and accessories. I’m pretty sure you have more things than I do, so how do you store your stuff?

Thanks!

Incidentally, just yesterday, Syen of Soloverly asked to see what my bathroom cabinet looked like. I don’t store my cosmetics or skincare in the bathroom but in my bedroom on/in a dresser. On a personal note I do not recommend the bathroom for storing cosmetics if you also use it to shower – the heat and high humidity can cause products to spoil. So, with the pressing requests, here’s a combined post showing you roughly what my dresser looks like (when its neat and clean) and how I store my makeup and skincare.

storage

My dresser is part of a bedroom set that I picked up from a furniture store that promptly burnt down 2 weeks later. Ah yep! Insurance I have no doubt 😛 Anyway, I chose it for the many drawers it had and the large mirror it came with.

Most of my cosmetics are stored in storage boxes on top of the dresser which makes things very cramped and not pretty. However, its practical and I tend to go for practical over pretty. Practical means I have less to dust as boxes are easier to wipe down 😛

So ends the story of how my dresser looks – onto how I actually store my makeup, skincare and etc… 😉
