Gadgets

Fab or Fad? Which of these wildly popular beauty gadgets and beauty fads are you still using?

August 20, 2013 Paris B 77 Comments

beauty gadget hype

I was doing a bit of thinking recently. Dangerous business, this thinking thing 😛

But I was thinking of all the beauty gadgets and fads that have hit us with cult status at one time or another through the years and how many I’d fallen for just “to try” and how much money I have wasted over time. Yeah, I think you know my answer to my question above.

I have followed fads and although they were fab at the time, just how many of they are still fab for me months or years down the road?

I’m going to share with you a couple of beauty gadgets and fads that I’ve tried and you can tell me if you too have fallen for them or any other fad or gadget du jour, and whether you are still using them. Deal? 😀 Onward!

Gadget Geekery: One for the girls – Canon Powershot N and EOS 100D Cameras, also perfect for Bloggers!

June 2, 2013 Paris B 26 Comments

canon eos 100d camera

I’m taking gadget geekery on a slightly different tangent today because I wanted to share with you 2 new cameras that I think people who blog or like to share photos on the go may like. I’m a huge tech/gadget geek, and I know some of you are too. Besides, I consider cameras to have a beauty of their own!

I recently attended a showcase of the latest cameras by Canon, and one or even two of the new Canon babies stood out to me as cameras that bloggers, or even beauty (and food!) bloggers, will appreciate 😀 (Caveat: No monies or products exchanged hands for this post, unfortunately. Only information because I was quite excited about them 😛 )

If you’ve been toying with the idea of getting a new camera, here’s a place to start. I’m pretty much firmly entrenched in the Canon camp as you can tell 😛

Konjac Sponge Company Konjac Sponge Puff: The Konnyaku you put on your face not in your mouth

November 22, 2012 Paris B 78 Comments

I’m sure you have noticed this, but the beauty world (and by extension, beauty blog world) operate in trending waves. One day you have a wave of people telling you how wonderful the Clarisonic has been for their skin and everyone runs out to buy one, nevermind the hefty price, and mostly love it. You hardly hear about anyone not liking it. I however, am ambivalent about it, but honestly, after the first 5 months, its just pretty much a white elephant now. Its the most expensive mistake I’ve ever made for a face washing gadget.

The latest trendy wave to hit is the konjac sponge. I call it a trend, but I do think this might actually hang around longer primarily because it does a fair enough job and is pretty affordable so more people can get into it.

konjac sponge for face

So what is this “Konjac sponge” people talk about? Its a face washer. That’s just breaking it down to its most basic. This is a sponge that you use to wash your face, as you would a sponge, flannel or muslin cloth. The material is what’s the selling point. Konjac is, according to the almighty Wikipedia, also known as konnyaku. If you eat Japanese or Korean food, you may come across konnyaku in some dishes – a translucent gelatinous substance that is a source of fibre. It is most popularly eaten in the delicious form of konnyaku jelly (yummy!!)

These konjac sponges for washing your face aren’t edible however. They could be made from the similar source, but it looks much like a sponge. There are many many brands available in the market in different price ranges. You can easily pick them up from Sasa stores (I picked up a really cheap one in Hong Kong for something like HKD22 ~ RM10) or you can buy them online like I did with the one I tried.

The brand I tried is the Konjac Sponge Company. I picked it up from Zuneta.com, tossing it into my shopping basket almost as an afterthought because I wanted to see what the hype was about. Because its shipped out of the UK, I did not have to pay VAT so the plain Konjac Sponge Company sponge came up to £5. I also picked up a baby one for my nephew.  So, how is this trend faring for me then?

Hate Ironing? You Need A Garment Steamer In Your Life!

April 22, 2012 Paris B 80 Comments

I don’t know about you ladies out there, but if there is one household chore I hate… and I mean HATE! … its ironing. I’d sooner mop the house and wash bathrooms than iron my clothes. I’d sooner dress in knits than cotton shirts and dresses.   I’d sooner hire someone just to iron my clothes, if I had the means to. You get the general idea. I hate ironing.

clothes steamer

A few years back however, I purchased a contraption that hasn’t made me love ironing clothes any more, but it has made me tolerate ironing just a little bit better. Enter the clothes steamer, or garment steamer, however you want to call it.

You might have seen this contraption in boutiques or the fashion departments in departmental stores. I used to notice it but I never quite thought about buying one for myself. It was only when I was chatting to a friend who used to own a boutique, that she pushed me into buying one – the best investment you can ever make, she told me. Know what? She was absolutely right!
