Every time I look at my nephews who refuse to nap or go to bed at night, I tell them “Wait till you get older! You might not even be able to go to sleep when you want to!”
Hello sleeping problems.
I am not a chronic insomniac, but I do go through bouts of having trouble sleeping. I try to manage it, but sometimes it hits you late at night, when you find yourself staring at the ceiling, willing sleep to come, and it eludes you.
I’d recently been going through such a bout, when digging around my skincare cupboard yielded a surprise find – This Works Deep Sleep Night Oil. I’d forgotten I had a bottle!
This time, I found myself liking it better.
What This Works Deep Sleep Night Oil is, is a body oil. I know that many people wrinkle their noses at me when I say “body oil” because for the most part, people don’t like putting oil on their skin.
In our climate, it is understandable to feel this way. However, if you have air-conditioning on when you sleep then it’s actually quite comfortable.
If you use facial oils then body oils shouldn’t feel as alien a concept to you 😀 For me, I prefer body oils to body lotions. The latter I find tends to be too sticky and greasy.
But coming back to This Works Deep Sleep Night Oil – what makes it so special?
Well, not only does it nourish your skin, the scent envelops you and calms your senses so it prepares you better to fall asleep.
While you might think at this juncture that it smells of lavender (as do most sleep aids) this doesn’t, although it contains lavender. Instead, it has an earthy, woody smell of vetiver as its anchor, alongside the more musky scent of Provencal lavender and chamomile.
I love the smell of vetiver, so it almost instantly calms my senses. I am quite generous with application. I squirt about 3-4 pumps into my palms, warm it up, and then apply it on both my arms.
It isn’t greasy or sticky, it does not mark my sheets, and it feels lovely. While I take great pains to care for my face, I don’t take as much care with the skin on my body (I only use the L’Occitane Ultra Rich Cream for my hands at night) which is something I’m trying to get back into the habit of doing.
I’ve noticed that since I started reusing this oil in the past few weeks, my skin on my arms look and feel smoother and more moisturised. It’s not only our faces that need care! 😛
Has it helped me sleep better?
Actually yes it has. I personally find the scent very comforting, and because it’s on my arms, it envelops me as I do a little light reading before bed. I have found it easier to fall asleep, which is always a good thing for me. And I also find myself sleeping better through the night, instead of waking up bright-eyed at odd hours of the morning.
I used to use the Deep Sleep Pillow Spray as well, but I don’t anymore because I find the REN one a bit more affordable. But until REN comes out with a body oil to aid insomniacs like me, I’ll be sticking to this one – that scent of vetiver is intoxicating! 😀
IN A NUTSHELL
The This Works Deep Sleep Night Oil is a body oil that absorbs easily and moisturises skin without feeling greasy. I do not notice it marking my sheets, and it feels very comfortable and my arms do look and feel smoother with regular nightly use. It also contains vetiver, lavender and chamomile scents to aid sleep. I do enjoy the rather strong, earthy and woody scent of vetiver that I find very comforting. For this reason, I do find that it helps calm my senses and help me fall asleep more easily. It is not as effective as a sleeping pill, but it won’t make you feel as crap when you wake up!

I’ve also been using the Deep Sleep Shower Gel which really isn’t much to write home about. It’s nice, but not half as nice as the pillow spray or the body oil. I’m wondering if there’s anything else similar out there?

Short and sweet ingredient list! With the exception of camphor… methinks this is not too difficult to whip up on my own using therapeutic grade essential oils and grape seed carrier oil as a base 😉

Maybe you can make your own and turn it into a more affordable business option! 😉

I’m not sure whether I already mentioned it, but “The sleep book“ by Guy Meadows was a game changer. I went from severe insomnia to pretty good sleep in a matter of days. 🙂
It’s based on acceptance and commitment therapy, an evidence-based psychotherapy. Absolutely brilliant.

I remember you mentioning it Maja 🙂 I haven’t read it yet, but I have been sleeping quite well lately *touchwood* and that feels amazing! Sleep is so underrated for well being 🙂

I have a hard time falling asleep recently. I’ve tried changing my positions, and even sleep on the couch and carpet. Some days it works, some not..hahaha..

Sleeping problems are the pits! I find that simple meditation to help clear and calm the mind helps. Also, winding down properly before bed, and reading. I like the smell of lavender so that helps me too!

By the way, have you ever tried sensory deprivation (lying in a dark quiet tank of salt water)? I had a second session last week, it’s so relaxing! Also, I had some acoustic hallucinations which were quite interesting.
I thought you might enjoy it, unless you’re claustrophobic… 🙂
Paris B says
Ooh I haven’t, and while I’m not claustrophobic per se, I can get a bit uncomfortable in enclosed spaces. I fear it might make me more stressed than relaxed haha!
