Your Say: Are you more willing to forgive an inexpensive product if it is a dud?

October 17, 2017 Paris B 28 Comments

I was watching a video of someone showing some of her pharmacy (drugstore) beauty hauls during a recent sale (I like seeing what people buy). She picked up a cheap powder, that naturally wasn’t as impressive as something more expensive, but said it was OK because it was cheap. As I too am wont to do at a pharmacy sale, I tend to pick up random products that I may or may not have tried before. Quite often, they are below RM50 (US$12 – That’s what I’d consider cheap these days) and I don’t feel too bad about popping them into my basket.

This is the same phenomenon that happens to me when I visit a Daiso. Everything at the local Daiso is RM5.90 and to most people, that’s cheap. So, you pop 10 things into your basket, not realizing until the cashier rings up your purchase, that it’s about RM60 – and suddenly that’s not very cheap at all! LOL

inexpensive dud forgiving

But I have come home with duds from pharmacy sales or from Daiso. I’m sure you have too. That product that you bought, that you thought might work, doesn’t. Or it turns out to be more flimsy than you expected. Or perhaps, it breaks easily. Or in the case of beauty, the colours have poor pay off, or don’t smell nice, or don’t last as long as you expect them to.

Are you more willing to forgive an inexpensive dud?

The jumbo crayons in Chanel Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur range will help you colour within the lines

October 16, 2017 Paris B 5 Comments

Crayon-style lipsticks have been around for a while, and you and I know that. But it doesn’t stop me from craning my neck at the next new one to hit the counters, because I happen to quite enjoy using these sort of lip products. I’m less enamoured with the ones I have to sharpen than I am with retractable crayon versions.

I read about the Chanel Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur lipsticks months before they became available here in Malaysia. When I first enquired, I was told that strangely, we were only getting ours later in the year as opposed to other countries who got theirs earlier. So there are many many posts out about it now, if you want to read a different viewpoint!

Now, you can say that Chanel is a little late to the party. Crayon lipsticks have been done over and over ad nauseum from department store brands to pharmacy/drugstore brands. But release one they did, anyway! I like that – it’s like Chanel just said, “Hey, we know this is something that’s done to death, but let’s just do it anyway!”

To be fair to them, they did do a pretty good job of the Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur lipsticks. But there were one or two things I felt might have made these excellent as opposed to just good 🙂

Can fragrance in skincare make your skin sensitive? How can you tell if it does?

October 13, 2017 Paris B 10 Comments

Time was, whenever I was faced with a product targeted at “sensitive skin”, I’d just smile politely and move on. I was convinced (not without reason) that my skin was not sensitive. And to a large extent, there was some truth in that.

Generally speaking, I do not have what is conventionally referred to as “sensitive skin”. My skin does not get irritated easily, and I do not suffer from eczema or most skin problems (for which I am very thankful!). I have older, more matured skin than most of you reading this, I warrant, and I am plagued by the problems associated with age – hyperpigmentation, loss of elasticity, dry skin – and I target those concerns in my skincare regimen.

While I now take the trouble to look at the ingredient list on a skincare product, I’d never quite thought about how fragrance reacts with my skin, despite reading a lot of literature telling me that it can sensitize skin or aggravate sensitive skin. I have friends who tell me they cannot use a certain product that I might enjoy, because the fragrance in the product irritates their skin. I never quite understood it. Sorry guys 😛

But recently, I had an experience that drove the point home for me. Fragrance in skincare, in copious amounts in my case, can indeed lead to skin sensitivity! Do you experience the same?

Does the Bobbi Brown Instant Full Cover Concealer really fake you having 8 hours of sleep?

October 11, 2017 Paris B 15 Comments

A little while ago, I came across news of a new concealer from Bobbi Brown. It got me a little excited, because I have a thing for concealers (as much as I have a thing for all makeup really LOL!) and I really really wanted to know if it might live up to my favouritest ever concealer.

I do realise I often do myself a disservice by comparing every new concealer I come across to my favourite concealer, but I can’t help it. I’m a) human and b) biased LOL!

This new concealer is the Bobbi Brown Instant Full Cover Concealer. I first got to try it in my box of goodies as an Elle Malaysia guest judge for their beauty awards, and I later received a lovely press kit, with a lovely silk eye mask, that you see above. I still haven’t quite gotten the hang of wearing an eye mask to sleep – tips? Don’t say just put it over my eyes 😛

The thing you see, is that when I first got hold of it, there was no accompanying literature, so I tried it out without expectation. But I really wanted to know if it might live up to my secret expectation to supersede my holy grail concealer.
