It’s a public holiday here in Malaysia today and I’m settling down for a nice spot of Sherlock catching up. This past couple of weeks has been an excellent one for Sherlock fans as Series 3 airs in the UK and ends as quickly as a flash in the pan. I think it’s just the BBC that makes such short 3 episode series – who does that, especially with such a popular series?! Honestly BBC! 😛 I just got hold of the new episodes myself so I’m going to savour them. Slowly, like a delicious morsel of truffle chocolate 😉
But complaints aside, while the final episode airs, and Series 3 opens up in the USA, I see a lot of people complaining about spoilers; and this is true for any popular TV series. No one likes spoilers… or do they? How do you feel about spoilers? Do they spoil things for you?
I’m probably one of those people who doesn’t care about spoilers. I guess I’m impatient that way so I don’t mind knowing what happens next or what happens at the end, because if I enjoy watching a particular TV show or movie I will watch it till the end, regardless of what I know.
Same with books. Sometimes I’m patient and good and plod through a book page by page till I get to the end. Quite often I don’t. I’d start off a book and about a third of the way in, I’d flip to the end to see what happens. More so if it’s a thriller. I just want to know what happens to the protagonist or the villain or if there is a twist in the tale.
I suppose I just can’t wait for that twist in the tale to come naturally LOL! 😀
And it’s the same for me with TV series that I watch. I watch a few and quite often, I come across a series a little late in the day so there is usually a lot of information online already about the storyline and I’m not above taking a little peek now and again just to see how the story develops. Again, I guess you could say I have no patience 😀
Sometimes, knowing how a book ends makes it easier for me because I have a bad habit of wanting to finish a book in one sitting, if it’s exciting and considering I read before bed, it isn’t a good thing. I need my beauty sleep LOL! So knowing how it ends makes it easier for me to put it down.
Do you read spoilers for books or for any TV series or movies you watch? Do spoilers piss you off?
I do, a lot of the time so I usually know how storylines develop or how a book ends before I get there. So for me, a “Spoiler” doesn’t spoil things for me because I still savour the journey getting to that ending. What say you? Does coming across a spoiler piss you off? 😀

Hhmmmm i have not thought of this before but now that you have asked, i actually relied alot on spoilers for both movies and books! Without them, i just dont do anything. Except make up! Hahahaha
Paris B says
Haha I’m never spoiled by makeup. There’s no plot! Lol!
Tracy@Beauty Reflections says
I’m like you! I don’t care about spoilers. It doesn’t ruin it for me. Like the Harry Potter movies-I didn’t enjoy the movies any less just because I knew what was gong to happen, right? And I HATE HATE HATE people that complain about spoilers. STAY OFF THE INTERNETZ if you care that much. It’s all up to you. Don’t blame me for “spoiling” something for you-nobody asked you to listen to my tweets LOL! 🙂 I’m such a meanie hahahaha 😛
Lily says
OMG I feel the same, Tracy! If you hate spoilers so much, why would you even google it and see what happens? HAHAHA! I’m so impatient, I always skip or jump a few chapters of the book then go back to read it. I thought it’s a really bad habit but I’m glad to know I’m not the only one. LOL!
Tracy@Beauty Reflections says
HIGH FIVE BABY!
Paris B says
Yeah I’m always reading a little ahead. Its weird but at least we know we aren’t alone!
Paris B says
Lol! Yeah I think the safest way to not be bummed by spoilers if it bugs you is to stay away until you’ve watched a show. I actually don’t get the people who claim to be spoiled by Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit. Don’t they read the books before watching? I think the books are the spoilers here! Lol
Sasha says
I’m also a fan of Sherlock and when I want to avoid Spoilers, I simply stay away from the place crowded with Sherlock fans. Yes, it’s that simple. I avoid Twitter (I only go on my mentions), I avoid Tumblr until the episodes are broadcasted. I’ve never been spoiled. And it worked for the 3 seasons. I honestly don’t understand the people who are scrolling the whole day on Tumblr and Twitter AND THEN are complaining about spoilers.
Anyway Paris, you’re gonna LOVE the new season of Sherlock. It’s…amazing, until the last seconds of the last episode, literally 😀
Paris B says
Ahhh I watched the 1st episode yesterday and gosh, my head was spinning! I have to watch it again, I just know it 😉 but you’re right. The best way to avoid spoilers is not to go looking for them and I had to laugh at your statement because its so true! Don’t want to be spoiled, don’t go looking for spoilers! 😀
ishi says
Awwwwww, and I just watched John Watson got married not a couple of days ago and the season is already ending??? REALLY BBC!!!
See I just stumbled on that little piece of information; did not go looking for it. With Sherlock it does not matter much really because I’ve read the books anyway. The difference between the movie and the classic is the adaptation. It is interesting to actually compare the two.
Anyway, I don’t watch enough tv/movies to care about spoilers; books however are quite different. I love to read and try to spend as much time to do so whenever I can, before bed is usually the time, but even that is disappearing fast. I use goodreads.com quite extensively and even register for the book challenge every year. I use the reviews to decide if I’d want to buy/read certain titles. So that is handy. Sometimes the reviewers give away too much which I find, did not matter much as I forget that bits of information by the time the book gets delivered….aahh memory loss is so underrated!
ishi says
Shall i tell you what happened to John and Sherlock in the final episode?…. ; )
Paris B says
LOL I went and read up about it actually HAHA! I have no patience, I swear!
Paris B says
I know! Damn you BBC! How dare they tease us so 🙁 actually you’re right. If a TV series or movie is based on a book, reading the book will automatically spoil it won’t it? I don’t get people who complain about spoilers in book adaptations. Mind boggling. As for books, I eyes I’m just impatient. I need to know if its worth my time plodding through 300 pages to find out the protagonist dies for example. So not on!
Alexis says
I can’t watch a series without reading the spoilers! I can’t concentrate if I don’t know what will happen. Hahaha!
chinbien says
me too. I will read the story lines first before I watch any dramas or movies.
Paris B says
Lol! No element of surprise for you then eh?
Alexis says
I can’t handle the suspense! Hahaha! Weird eh?
Firn says
I hate spoilers! Thankfully none of my social media outlets/frequently visited websites gave the game away for Sherlock S3.
Paris B says
Heh you know, I actually went LOOKING for spoilers! I don’t quite mind because I enjoy how the show develops anyway but I can imagine how frustrating it must be to know certain things ahead of time when it can spoil the show. Just watched s3 ep 1. Loved it!
Firn says
I just prefer to see how the filmmakers develop and expose the plot development. I guess it keeps my sense of wonder. When I know ahead of time, then I experience everything second-hand…
Kate says
I don’t mind at all, in fact sometimes knowing what’s gonna happen eventually makes it easier to appreciate what leads up to it! I’m also a Sherlock fan and I find that if I rewatch the same episode, there are really a lot of clear signs that points to the conclusion. ????
Paris B says
Yay for reading spoilers and for being a Sherlock fan 😀 I love rewatching the old eps. There’s so much I miss the first time around, every time I watch it I see/hear something new, especially cos the dialogue moves so quickly too!
LeGeeque says
Doesn’t bother me personally. In a way I like to be kept on the edge. But it won’t ruin my life so I’m meh. Homeland does a great job. So did 24. But I’m more into clever little turns and plots these days (The Good Wife is crazy good).
I understand there are those who don’t want spoilers and there are those who love talking about it (time difference etc) and with the internet levelling the playing field, perhaps it’s helpful/kind for those who do tweet/talk about it to use hashtags? Those who find spoilers bothering them, well, mute the hashtag. Staying away from the internet is akin to returning to the dark ages – good suggestion, downright impractical.
PS- I think you’ll appreciate Arrested Development (rewatching it all over again) and Veep. 🙂
Paris B says
Man, Homeland season 1 was so tiring! I actually can’t bring myself to watch season 2 which I hear isn’t very impressive. I’ll go check out The Good Wife and Arested Development. Always nice to find a new show to obsess over lol! As for twitter, to be honest, I think the safest way is to stay off Twitter. Few people use has tags (I often don’t, oops!) but I do take care not to spoil cos people are so fussy that way 😛
Tine says
Oooh I hate spoilers! I remembered missing the finale of Masterchef once and stayed off Twitter and Facebook for the next 5 hours just so I can watch the recap on catchup TV later. Hehehe. 😛
For me, the worst of all are book spoilers. I’m not that bothered about TV shows and movies but I can’t stand book spoilers. I spend a lot of hours reading to the end just so I can enjoy the whole book reading experience. Case in point, Harry Potter (I love the series, can’t help it :P). I was 2/3 along in one of the books, getting quite kan cheong … and then someone on Twitter said “well, X died.”. ARRRRRRGGGHHHH!!!
Let’s just say, that person was probably the most unpopular twit (hee hee) on my time line that day 😛
Paris B says
Hahahaa you know, when I read that JK Rowling killed off a character in the books, I went to the nearest bookshop, cracked open the book and looked for the character who died. I just had to know! Lol! But I can imagine how irritating it must be to find out on twitter of all places! But that’s also where news moves the fastest and with all the time zones, its only to be expected I guess. Safest to stay offline 😉
Kari says
It depends on the medium for me! For TV shows I follow, they usually get shown late here plus I don’t often have the time to catch them, so I read up on what happened online. I spoil myself in which case 🙂
For books however, it’s a totally different story. I LOVE reading and I love the thrill of having to go through the entire story before finding out what really happens to the characters. I remember my brother spoiling the ending of a book I was reading–I was so mad at him back then. Teehee 🙂
Paris B says
Lol! For books I tend to read a little ahead each time. I don’t know. Its like I can’t stand the suspense! Lol
Juan says
I do I do! I love spoilers because I’d like to know what am I getting at the end of the story. I’d like to understand where all these is heading and whether it is worth watching/reading ????
My husband doesn’t like it and he’s always amazed when I do haha. weird, huh?
Paris B says
Lol! Its so much fun right? I like knowing what happens because it doesn’t spoil the show for me anyway since I still have to see how its acted out and if someone I like is killed then at least I’m prepared 😛
Rebecca says
I hate spoilers because I like being surprised! My boyfriend, on the other hand, will look up the entire plot of a movie online WHILE HE’S WATCHING IT. I can understand not trying hard to avoid spoilers on social media or whatever, but the looking up the plot thing baffles me. Can’t he just… watch it?
Paris B says
Hahaha! That’s amusing 😀 I guess he just wants to know what’s happening even as he watches it develop? 😀
Carina says
I never read spoilers for books and TV shows, but I sometimes peek at synopses when I’m watching a movie on my computer. I can’t help it!
Paris B says
Ah yes synopsis of movies and shows do help me decide if I want to watch them, or read the book, but I sometimes go a little further and find out what actually happens. I guess a synopsis isn’t a spoiler as such as it gives us the plot without giving the story away 🙂
Aevil says
I really love spoilers xD . When I go to a bookstore to buy novel or comic book , I will read the synopsis first and read the last page to know if the story have a happy ending or sad ending.
When I wanna watch drama or movies , I will search on internet about the stories plot too !
Paris B says
Lol! Sounds like me except I try not to read the ending in a bookstore, though I do flip in between the pages to see if I like the style 😀
Sam Still Reading says
I don’t do book spoilers unless (like you, Paris) I need to sleep but also find out the ending OR the book is so confusing I need a Wikipedia article to tell me what’s happening.
I was a little annoyed when Twitter broke the death of a character on Downton Abbey (although it was partially my fault for being on at that time!) But then, I didn’t watch much Series 3 and when I turned it on for a moment, a character was dying then too! I have no luck with that show!
So I guess I like a surprise! (Only if it’s nice though).
Paris B says
Lol at your Downton Abbey experience. I’ve been told its a good show, and I do have a couple if seasons so I guess I should get started, although something tells me that if I do get started, I’ll be online looking up the spoilers to get me through the story lol!
Cece says
I don’t read spoilers. I do read synopsis though 🙂 esp for TV series. Sometimes I just want to know the story without having had to watch all the episodes.
Can you do a list of your favorite books in year 2013? I like to know what people read nowadays. We could all discover some hidden gems.
Paris B says
That’s a great idea Cece! I’ll try to do a book post soon although I can’t honestly remember what I read in 2013 except I know I was re reading some old books. Maybe a summary of what I’ve read recently that I enjoyed? Let me get to that, it’ll be fun 🙂
Anne says
Benedict Cumberbatch! yummy yummy! I’m a huge Sherlock’s fan too. He is so much better as Sherlock as compared to RDJ. He is kinda weird looking, too pale ,but simply charming…..i love the episode 2 in Season 3 where he was screening the male pal of Mary…warning him to stay away from Mary after the marriage and stating that he is a highly functional pyschopath with the tel number….wicked :p
I avoid reading spoliers online…im the one that needed to watch it to believe it…and i will just skip those sites that reveal major spoliers, like People.com and Entertainment weekly.
Paris B says
Yum! 😉 I love Martin Freeman too. His acting is seriously out of this world and in some ways I think he is a better actor. I haven’t seen season 3 ep 2 but will soon. That’s the one where John gets married right? I have to admit I enjoy watching the bromance between the 2 of them. Seriously good stuff! 😉
Marina(Makeup4all) says
Great question, hehe. Sometimes I do read the spoilers. But I get very annoyed when people tell me what is going to happen, Go figure Lol
Paris B says
Haha it does make sense actually cos to read a spoiler you have to go looking for it but when people tell you, its uncalled for!
lyn says
If I plan to watch a movie/series, I try to stay away from spoilers. Unless it’s one of those super hero stuff, which we all already know what happens. I don’t really read many book reviews so most of what I’ve read have been unspoiled. I read from start to finish unless the book is so bad that it’s actually painful to get to the end *cough* Twilight *cough*
Paris B says
Lol! I refused to have anything to do with that franchise! Sometimes I read spoilers of stuff so I know what’s going on and can hold me own in discussions of shows I’ve never seen. I know, its weird but its stood me in good stead through the years 😉
Jennifer says
I’d normally watch the movie first, then read the book. As far as I recall, sometimes the movie might be a little far fetched or compressed version of the book. Like Memoirs of a Geisha. I thought the book was a lot better than the movie. I was glad to read the book after I watched the movie. However, for fantasty flicks like Lord of The Ring and the likes of it, I would prefer to watch the movie. I am imaginative but not to the extent of Smaug and wizards 🙂 Plus ultra thick books with font size 5 scares the daylight out of me 😛
Paris B says
Lol you know when I buy a book, I always check the font size. If its too big, I don’t buy it cos it feels like I’m not getting value for money, so the smaller the better lol! Weird right? I preferred watching LOTR to reading it too as I found the book hard to plod through.
