Rose hues infuse the colours in the new Cle de Peau Extra Rich Lipstick

November 11, 2013 Paris B 32 Comments

About a couple of months ago, Cle de Peau Beaute, a luxury brand of cosmetics launched their new Extra Rich Lipstick. Cle de Peau is one of those brands that I look at from afar but never try because the prices stagger me. Trust me, it takes some doing, but it happens. But I knew about this brand because when I first started getting interested in using makeup, one of the things that kept cropping up over and over, was the Cle de Peau concealer. I still haven’t tried it.

But today, I’d like to share with you some pictures and swatches of the Cle de Peau Beaute Extra Rich Lipstick. That’s the case that you see there. Unique and certainly, quite unusual. I do find Cle de Peau’s fascination with geometrical designs and angles quite interesting because angles are hard and makeup isn’t.

The angular designs are also reflected in the lipsticks, which you’ll see below. Incidentally, the lipsticks and case are sold separately. Now brace yourself. These are luxury items 🙂

The new Extra Rich Lipstick are, as the name implies, infused with more colour, better texture and more skincare benefits. The colours are inspired by the rose so expect many shades of rose tinted colours available. Incidentally, I’ve found that rose tinted lipsticks suit more people than straight pink or red.

This is my first time trying the Cle de Peau Beaute lipsticks. Remember when I mentioned that the lipsticks too sported the angular, geometrical shapes found in many Cle de Peau makeup designs? I think it quite unique.

The lipsticks are sold separately from the case so you technically have the option to not purchase the case if you prefer. However, the lipsticks come with a rather flimsy plastic cover that doesn’t stay put all that well unless you keep your lipsticks in their own pouch, so that’s something to think about. If I’m to be honest, I don’t quite get why the case should be sold separately.

We’re told that it’s because it allows you to carry just the colour you need or to swap it out if you like. It also reduces wastage because when you’re finished with your lipstick, you can just snap it out of the case and refill it with a new colour. Problem is, I’m not sure how many beauty junkies will actually finish a lipstick hehe..

cle de peau extra rich lipstick case

Here’s how it looks when I snap one into the case. It’s sturdy although the case is plastic so from a personal point of view, if you can handle not having a case (hard I know because the lipsticks are so expensive in themselves!) then you can easily skip it.

Cle de Peau Beaute Extra Rich Lipstick Left-Right: #109, #310, #304

Each colour was swatched just once except for #304 which had to be layered. You will notice how richly pigmented #109 and #310 are. Based on my observation, here are the description of the colours

  • #304 – A pink in the tube, but on skin a lovely wearable rosy hue with shades of pink
  • #310 – An orangey muted red in the tube, but on skin an intense bright red
  • #109 – A rosy red in tube and a colour I thought I’d love but on skin it swatched a sheer rosy shade

I have to admit I was a little surprised at #109 and how sheer it was. It took 2 layers for the colour to show up in the photo which didn’t quite bring to mind the description of “Extra Rich”.

On lips, they do apply beautifully. The sharp angular shape and the straight design at the tip actually facilitates the application of lipstick and a sharp line without using a brush. This is especially helpful with bright colours like #310.

You may notice that #109 looks a little more glossy than the other two, which are more intense and creamy although they aren’t matte.

Longevity was surprisingly good. I liked how #310 did not travel at all outside of the lip line nor did it feather or bleed through the day. I could easily wear these all day because they do feel very light and comfortable on lips. The drawback however, is the price which I can say will not sit well with many.

Still, it’s one of those things. Luxury goods are luxury goods. They aren’t for everyone but it’s there for someone 🙂 Here’s how the colours look on me just for reference. You may click on the images below to enlarge.

In a nutshell

Cle de Peau Beaute recently reformulated their Extra Rich Lipstick to make it even richer, and with better skincare benefits for lips. I have to say that the texture of the lipsticks are very lovely. They are creamy without being too creamy and pigmented. They are also very comfortable to wear and non drying on lips. The angular design does take some getting used to but it does help to create a smooth straight lip line when applying straight from the bullet. So I have nothing to fault when it comes to the texture and longevity and general product. However, I am not enamoured with the idea of having to buy the case separately. I prefer to have my lipsticks come in their own cases especially when I’m already paying so much for the product. Still, if I can overlook that, these are excellent.

Pros: Lightweight texture, Rich creamy colour, Longlasting, Non drying, No scent

Cons: Case is sold separately, Pricey

Who will like this: Anyone who loves wearing pigmented creamy lipstick

cle de peau lipstick case

The case is surprisingly large too, as you can see. I don’t think it necessary to actually buy the case to be honest. I do wish it came in one though. That said, I suppose it does reduce the amount of packaging needed and you can use it indefinitely with your lipstick refills instead of tossing it out wholesale when you’re done.

Have you tried Cle de Peau Beaute lipsticks or any other makeup? Have any recs?

This is my first time trying their lipstick. I tried their eyeshadow singles many years ago. The texture was silky and out of this world, but I’m allergic to them so I had to give them away. If you have other faves, let me know!

Rm205 for both the refill cover and the lipstick itself? No, thank you. This is madness! I mean, yes the packaging is unique and all but the colour doesnt surprise me at all. I would rather go for Dior as I can get 2 lipsticks out of that total money. Thank you for your review for this lipstick, but I can never be happy to apply them on my lips knowing I have to be cautious not to finish it so soon as it is darn expensive for a lipstick. LOL!

Yep! Sadly the math just doesn’t quite add up 🙁 It’s very good quality, that much I’d admit but it also certainly belongs in the luxury category that appeals to a select group of consumers only. And I thought my Guerlain Rouge G obsession was hurting my wallet plenty! 😉

Wow! The #304 is very nice pink!! Anything on your lips somehow or rather truly get me enticed to get one! LOL! One as in once a lifetime a luxurious lipstick 😀 But the extra case thingy.. blah…
Will most likely just get the lipstick without the case :p

Haha! I have to say that the quality is certainly there so it’s one of those things where people who can afford it will splurge and those who can’t, well there are always options! 😉 The case is pretty optional but I think a little silly. Then again, the Japanese are good for things like this. Notice how they sell their foundations separately too? 😛

The separate packaging boggles me, and for that kind of price I would have expected stellar packaging.

Unfortunately this just highlights the fact that a fantastic lipstick would not amount to much if the packaging is bad.

Haha yeah, I did think so too. The separate packaging doesn’t feel as subtantial. Now, if it was like Guerlain’s Rouge G packaging, I’d love for it to come separately! 😀

Love the shades, but nothing special IMO. I’m sure there are some who will pay for these, but nah. RM145 just for the refill… I think I’ll pay just a little more for a Guerlain Rouge G. Or I’d save a third of the price for a Rouge Dior 😛 And I’m not even looking at that case. A little gimmicky if you ask me. It is environmentally friendly, technically speaking, but so unnecessary >_<

It definitely caters to a niche market. Good quality, but the price is just too ouch for the masses. Then again, most of their stuff are, which explains why I haven’t gone anywhere near the counter LOL! I’d happily spring for a Rouge G myself. Now that’s one packaging I don’t mind coming separately or in refills! 😀

I like how everything is angular with them-so different. Hourglass lipsticks have that angular shape to them as well-most people hate that, but I love it as I have pointy peaks so it’s so easy to apply for me. I haven’t tried these and not sure I will. The brand seems “old lady” to me, which I know I ammmm, but I’m in denial LOL.

I love the angles too Tracy! I didn’t realise how easy it was to actually apply lipstick with angles vs the regular teardrop! 😀 I think at those prices, the brand certainly doesn’t cater to the masses. It’s very luxury niche which is nice I suppose, for those who want to buy different stuff from the rest of the populace 😀

OK soooo during my recent trip to Taipei, I picked up the infamous concealer and their brow pencil. I’m still getting to know them, but so far so good and I’ll keep you posted!

I have heard great things about their other lipsticks, and I have had one applied once. I’ve got to say the formula is pretty amazing, but they’re SOOOO pricey and most shades seem very easily dupeable, so I passed! 310 and 109 look great, but 304 seems like an odd one here!

Ooh you got the concealer! I’ve heard so much about it! But because I’m already so happy with the NARS one I’m not sure about shelling out so much more money for this, but it’ll be good to know how it fares and if it lives up to its hype 😀 You’re right about the lipstick. The formula is something else, but the price floors even me and that takes some doing 😉

$80 for Guerlain limited edition lipstick was the most I paid for a single lipstick. That is more than Tom Ford regular line lipstick. Cle de Peau is seriously out for me. Like you, I steer clear from the counter.

I must say that the swatches honestly don’t look like much too. I can get better payoff in one swipe with some drugstore lipsticks.

Were those the first swipe? Like brand new out of package? Cos normally they swatch better after a bit of rubbing.

I sprung for a Tom Ford once but I think that’s about the maximum I’d pay myself. Lipsticks are for the most part, among the most dupable of cosmetics anyway 🙂 I find that the CdP applies better on lips than on arms. Tugged a little on the arms, but went on like butter on lips so it’s lovely, just not quite RM145 for refill only lovely 🙂

CdP Beaute has counters in many high-end department stores in Shanghai, which is where I stock up on the concealer. The Ultra Rich lipstick (old) is one of my favourite lipstick formulas – extremely smooth, super pigmented (second only to Serge Lutens, in my opinion), and long-wearing. The original R1 Black Baccara, R2 Red Abundance, and R3 Leonardis are absolutely foolproof reds. I hope those colours haven’t been discontinued, because that would be a shame. If CdP needs to reformulate anything, it should be their eyeshadows, which are hopeless; I wish they’d leave the lipsticks alone.

Mmm I’m guessing the concealer is worth the splurge then, Li Wen? 😀 I plan to try it some day. I believe this Extra Rich Lipstick replaces an older range so I hope that you’ll like the new formula! I haven’t tried the old one so I can’t compare but I did like this one even if one of the colours wasn’t as rich as I thought it would be. As for eyeshadows, I have to say I agree haha! I had a couple that I got cheap but since I’m allergic I’m sort of glad because I don’t have to look at them again 😉

You carried off 310 really well! Your iconic shade – red! I was quite smitten by 109 because I think I am biased towards rosy shades. Agree that the geometrical design is unique. I observe that Japanese make up tend to adopt this concept of selling the product and casing separately. The one above, the casing is priced about 40% from the product. I cannot fathom the concept really…I might take forever to finish the product hence if it came together with the casing, it is fine for me. Ok, there are some instances when the product sort of outlive the casing, perhaps it is good to be able to switch the casing. The price is quite a killer though. I have seen more beautiful red shades on you from other notable brands with more affordable yet luxury pricing.

Thank you Jennifer 😀 Yeah I’ve noticed that I should stick to bright lip shades – pale ones just wash me out and can make me look sick. You’re right too about the separate case thing. Japanese makeup tends to sell things like foundation separately too which can be a bother because the initial cost of owning it is so high!
