Rachel K CC Cream in Original and Neutral: Pioneering and leading the Wild West of CC Creams

August 14, 2013 Paris B 35 Comments

A couple of years back, I picked up rumblings of a CC Cream. This was way before the Chanel and Clinique CC Creams came into existence. I remember laughing about it. CC Creams! Haah! Well, CC Creams are now the new normal.

But the pioneer in the CC Cream department is the Rachel K CC Cream. I remember, because I laughed about them which was a little unfortunate because it is quite a good product, all said and done.

Rachel K is Rachel Kum, a former Miss Singapore Universe beauty queen, who went and created the next generation Blemish Balm or BB Cream, calling it the CC Cream. Little did she guess I suppose, that so many brands would follow suit over the years. I received these some time last year. I couldn’t quite get my head around them which explains why you’re only hearing about them now from me. I’ve finally “got it” as it were. Slow learner eh? 😛

The Rachel K CC Cream comes in 2 formulas – Original in a black tube which is tinted pink and suited to people with pink skintones and Neutral in the pink tube suited to people with a neutral to yellow base. I can wear both, which might surprise you since I’m always banging on about using a pink toned base, but I use them for different purposes.

What Rachel K says her CC Cream is, is a more refined and improved version of a BB Cream. Her CC Cream has 10 in 1 benefits claiming both cosmetic and skincare benefits while controlling oil and protecting skin with SPF35 PA++ The Original version has a pink tint while the Neutral version is more tinted to look more like a light foundation.

These have been available in Singapore and Malaysia for a while and now also, worldwide so I’m very sure many of you would have tried it, and I’m curious to know how you liked it or if you did 🙂 There is one niggling fly in the ointment for me, which I’ll tell you about below.

Mouthwash: Do you need it and does it do more harm than good?

August 13, 2013 Paris B 65 Comments

I remember a little while ago, in the comment box some readers shared their thoughts on using mouthwashes, or rather, not using mouthwash. I came across a very interesting article in the Bangkok Post last week, that reminded me of this fleeting discussion so I thought I’d like to open this up for further discussion.

mouthwash harmful or good

We often see lots of ads on TV encouraging us to use a mouthwash or to gargle with one to prevent cavities and gum disease. There are some that are so strong it feels like they strip off the interior lining of your tongue and mouth (Listerine, ouch!), some that taste so sweet it feels almost ridiculous, some that even stain your teeth red (Plax, ugh!) and some that claim to be all natural (Ah Yuan and Aesop).

In most cases, I have not seen them advertised as being a substitute for regular brushing and flossing, but I can imagine that sometimes, if in a hurry or tired people may just think a mouthwash could serve as a quick substitute. After all, it’s supposed to be good for your oral hygiene… or is it?

Do you use a mouthwash regularly and if so, why? Is it because you were advised to?

Australis Voluptulash Mascara : My crusade for a Holy Grail volumizing mascara ends on the shores of Australia

August 12, 2013 Paris B 20 Comments

Last year, I nominated the Maybelline The Falsies for my favourite mascara. This year, I haven’t even looked at it because I’ve found one that I really really REALLY love!

In fact, in the past 8 months, I have only used 2 mascaras – Diorshow Iconic Overcurl (which I thought was ok, but weighed down my lashes and destroys a curl) and the one I’m going to tell you about today – Australis Voluptulash Mascara. The latter is the one that’s caught my mascara-lashed heart and has resulted in me begging my friends Down Under to please please stock up more for me!

Australis is a drugstore/pharmacy brand sold only in Australia, I believe and this tube of Voluptulash was gifted to me by a friend who swore up and down that it was her Holy Grail mascara for the simple reason it did not smudge, budge, gave her lovely lashes and importantly, was so easy to remove! She basically sent it over and said “Try it! I love it and so will you!” I did 😀

The formula is a tube formula which basically forms a “tube” around your lashes and makes it very easy to remove with just warm water in the shower. Yep, it’s one of those mascaras that you can quite easily and literally wash off, having black bits come off as you go. Quite icky when you do it, but for some weird reason, so satisfying 😛

Bathtime just got a little more relaxing with these Amphora Aromatics Aroma Salts

August 11, 2013 Paris B 14 Comments

I must confess to having a soft spot for essential oils and aromatherapy, no mater how much of a mumbo-jumbo they can be at times. As far as I’m concerned, if it smells good to me and makes me feel comfortable and happy, it works! I’m quite sure many of you feel that way.

I also confess to a secret pleasure in having a bath. A proper luxurious bath, scented with calming essential oils and sprinkled with bath salts to soften the water, and no one to disturb. Just precious me-time. What wouldn’t I give to have a tub at home! If I did, I could luxuriate with these Aroma Salts from Amphora Aromatics more often than I currently do.

amphora aromatics dead sea salts

I was sent these 2 tubs of Aroma Salts by NattaCosme, an online beauty shopping site that stocks this brand, amongst other more well-known cosmetics brands and products.

I found these intriguing despite not having a bathtub at home, because according to the blurb on the cover, these can also be used as room fresheners. Just open the cover of the tub, and allow the scent from the essential oil infused dead sea salts to waft through the room.

I was having a lot of trouble sleeping at this time and I thought something that said Goodnight Sleeptight would do the trick. With lavender and chamomile infusing the bath salts, what could go wrong? Nothing, I’d warrant.

Unfortunately, it was wrong for me. The smell of Goodnight Sleeptight is a very sharp smell that wasn’t very pleasant, nor very relaxing. It even made me feel a little nauseous so I got back up in the middle of the night to shut the tub and stick it in a corner of my cupboard. But there was a saving grace! (Thankfully!)
