Have you ever looked at a product, write it off in your head for being just another lipgloss/lipstick/{insert makeup product} but give it a try anyway; and like pop rocks popping in your mouth, like a shot of caffeine to the system, your eyes open wide and the angels start to sing?
No?
I have to lay off the caffeine 🙂
But this is how I felt when I tried these new (and limited edition) Estee Lauder Pure Color Sheer Rush lipglosses. I’m not a lipgloss girl at the best of times but you know, when everyone is going “Ooh its summer! Sheer colour is in!” and when I have to shield my eyes against the scorching sun rays every time I step out of a building, suddenly I’ve been globbing on lipgloss like I was born to do it. I was really keen on these Pure Color Sheer Rush glosses because… look at the colour in tube! They look so bright and intense and … BRIGHT!
Guess what? They aren’t. They are sheer glosses. The name is a dead giveaway. These glosses are part of the Cello Shots capsule makeup collection which also feature a sheer liquid blush and a lipstick. I wasn’t sure how to group them at first but when I slicked on the lipgloss, I knew I had to tell you about the lipglosses first, because I love them.
Its saying a lot you know. I have very set preferences for lipgloss and so far, only 2 brands have managed to keep me loyal – Dior and Guerlain. I had an Estee Lauder Pure Color gloss from a while ago, but I wasn’t enamoured enough to go back to the counter. These Sheer Rush glosses are changing that, pronto!
Left-Right: X-pose Rose, Patent Pink, Hot Fuse
There are 6 shades in the collection and I’m showing you 3 of them from 3 different colour families. Interestingly, these glosses have corresponding matching colours in the Lip Shine lipsticks and the Sheer Rush cheek colours, if you are minded to go all matchy-matchy.
What I think I like most about these glosses is the texture. They apply on lips very sheer in comparison to the intense colour you see in the tube. It is rather deceptive but the texture wows me. It feels like a thick layer of non-sticky, non-goopy jelly over my lips and it makes my lips look like 2 quivering bits of translucent jelly.
As you can see, the colour appears as just a tint on the lips and if you don’t wear them side by side, you wouldn’t really be able to tell the difference. The colour that surprised me most was Pink Patent which is a bubblegum pink in the tube and which is never a pink I’d wear voluntarily. Its a colour I run away from at the first sight of it.
But it was also the most “intense” of the 3 shades I tried. The texture is a little more opaque and it is also a little more opaque on lips so it does give lips a pink tint that is surprisingly flattering! I was very surprised.
Hot Fuse is the bright red shade in the tube which I can imagine sends many people screaming in the opposite direction. But on lips, it is a translucent red that is not too bright at all, yet gives that tint of freshness. Layering it on doesn’t increase the intensity very much.
X-Pose Rose was another surprising colour. In tube, it looks like a violet which is again, not a colour I’d voluntarily wear. But on my lips, it became a lovely rosy berry shade that turns out to be a shade I wear all the time. You may also notice how much fuller my lips look wearing these glosses 😀
Longevity is surprisingly good. I wear this in the morning, have my coffee, have mugs of water and if I’m not too violent about things, the lovely shine and colour remains till I head out for lunch at about 12-1pm. It feels practically weightless and it isn’t sticky. I think I mentioned that but its worth saying again. Its not sticky! You get shine without shimmer and without goopiness! Win! 😀
(1) X-Pose Rose (2) Pink Patent (3) Hot Fuse
These are swatches on my arm where you can see the colour better. When you wear them on lips, they will naturally blend and reflect your natural lip colour so no 2 people will have the same sort of colour on their lips.
The applicator is your regular doe foot sponge applicator and I do find that it will apply the product slightly unevenly, as you can see in the arm swatch photo above. The sides will have more product than the middle so you do have to blend it out a little as you go. Not my favourite applicator style (I prefer brush applicators) but it does touch ups very well. I’ve given X-Pose Rose pride of place in my daily makeup pouch, next to my Dior Addict Icone lipstick and a Dior Addict lipgloss. Yes, its earned its stripes 😀
And here’s me wearing X-Pose Rose in a full face shot.
Also used: Kanebo Lunasol Skin Modelling liquid foundation OC-01, Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer Light 2 Vanilla, Benefit Bella Bamba blush, Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill eyeshadow #4 Pulp Fiction
It isn’t that sheer is it? You still see a lovely tint of translucent colour on lips with a very nice shine. Not too formal, but not too much of a party look either. Love this! 😀
In a nutshell
The Estee Lauder Pure Color Sheer Rush lipgloss has a high shine effect with no shimmer and a translucent jelly texture on lips. I like that it feels lightweight and does not dry my lips out. It almost feels moisturizing when I have it on, like jelly on my lips. The colour is a sheer hint of colour that is very pretty and it does not feel heavy, thick, goopy or sticky at all. The downside is that these are limited edition products and are available while stocks last.
Pros: Lovely jelly texture offers high shine and plumps up lips to make them look fuller, Translucent colour and shine gives a fresh look, Not drying, Not sticky, Moderate lasting power
Cons: Limited edition – should be made permanent!
Who will like this: Anyone who likes non-sticky lipglosses with no shimmer and with a jelly high shine effect
I haven’t been wowed by many things recently, but these blew my socks off. I’m not so sure about the Cheek Rush gel cheek colours yet. My socks are still pretty much on when I use those but I’ll share my thoughts on them soon. Tom Pechaux has done for EL what I never thought anyone could do – he’s made their makeup very appealing! 😀
Have you seen these? Which colour would you pick?
I thought these would be the regular EL glosses but I’m glad they weren’t! Sheer lip colours may not be everyone’s cup of tea but you know, when you live in a hot sunny country all year round, its good to have one of these in your makeup pouch for those lazy no-lipstick days 😀 My fave colour is X-Pose Rose – no surprise its wriggled its way into my daily lipstick pouch 😀

Why is it that the pretty things are almost always limited edition? >.<
Because brands are evil and know we’re all suckers!!! 😛
The glosses look really good on your lips. Guess I have to ‘walk by’ EL’s counter. Believe there is a promotion booth at Grd Floor Mid Valley this week.
Yep! I saw the EL booth at MidValley too and the glosses are on display! I didn’t have time to stop when I was there though. I wanted to check out the other colours 😀
LOL! I think you need to lessen your caffeine dosage! My eyes did widen at the 1st photo, love the colours!
hehe boinging off walls eh? 😛 The colours in tube are really pretty but I can imagine if someone were looking for these exact colours on lips then they would be pretty disappointed.
you look good in all colors PB…envy you..
my lips not suitable and canot carry gloss alone..
Aww thank you Wan. I’m sure you can wear glosses! You just have to find the right one and the right colour. I’ve done a lot of experimenting so I know which ones work best for me but you can try the Revlon Superlustrous Glosses – they’re really good too!
I think the Pure Colour LIp Gloss has been around for a while?
mine is Passion Fruit Shimmer (no. 11)
Anyways, I got mine from a magazine when I was in Sydney… that was a while ago………….
and I still keep it. LOL.
Yep CY, the Pure Color Lip gloss has been around but this Sheer Rush formula is a new one so it feels different on lips and also doesn’t have the strong fig scent found in all Estee Lauder lip products. I had one in Ruby Sparkle from a few years ago but didn’t like it enough to bother with the brand.
Gosh how I love them! You look great in those shades and you’re making me itch to get one of these too! Love love love!!!
Thanks GT! Maybe see if EL is doing any promos where you are? I know they do some really excellent deals over in the States!
You know what? I checked immediately after reading your post, but they sell it for $24 here, with tax and all after conversion, it comes up to RM80++. Too expensive for a lippie or lip gloss, for me…can’t justify it yet 🙁
hahah your reviews are always such an entertaining read, Paris! That pop rocks analogy is so spot-on. I think I love Pink Patent best out of the three, something about the color just goes so perfectly with that squishy finish.
Haha glad you enjoy them MM! I sometimes feel like I should just get to the point but then where’s the fun in that eh? 😉 I think Pink Patent would be suh-weet on you! Its got a lovely young vibe to it. Makes me feel 18 again! lalala…
Ooh I’ve been looking for backups for my beloved Lunasol cream cheek blushes (which are sadly, discontinued; I even considered buying the display samples from Takashimaya). I might go and check out these liquid blushes.
Hmm I think you may prefer the Dior cream blushes then Firn. I find these EL ones like a gel version of the Benefit cheek stains. They stain hands something awful but if you use fingers to apply, they barely show up! But still, worth a look if you’re in the market for them. I actually missed out on the Lunasol cheek blushes. They may still be online though – have you looked on http://www.adambeauty.com ?
Ooh, yes I just saw photos of the Dior blushes online. I heard Chanel is also doing cream blushes for Fall, but I want to compare them with the Bourjois ones.
Ugh, I don’t like Benetint because it’s too concentrated and not blendy enough. Are the Dior ones creamy? I find that some cream blushes turn powdery too quickly. I am also considering the GA Blushing Fabric ones too.
Ooh, thanks for the tip! Now I can stock up on my failsafe liquid blush! :)b
Yep I saw some swatches of the Chanel one online too and another reader just told me about the Bourjois blushes! I’m quite willing to bet you’ll see lots of similarities in them seeing as Bourjois owns Chanel anyway 😀 I wish I’d checked it out when I was in Singapore last! The Dior cream blush has a cream to powder finish and I’ve swiped them but not yet worn them. A friend loves them and tells me they are really long lasting so I’m quite excited about wearing them 😀 I think thanks to you I’m going to pick up one of the Lunasol cream blushes and try haha! I like that they came in a tube! At least they won’t dry out that quickly.
I love how blendable the Lunasol ones are and they mix well over sunscreen/foundation. I think you will be very pleased with them since they give a glowy (they do dry but not to a powder finish) but not sparkly/shimmery finish and I’ve had my first tube for almost 2 years and it’s still going strong!
The best way is to apply a tiny dot on a fingertip, smear it around with another fingertip and pat on to apply. That way it won’t mess up your concealer/foundation/sunscreen!
I can’t seem to access adambeauty’s website… 🙁
Hey Firn, I tried and could access the site. Can you try again? I also went to check out the cream blushes but they only have 1 colour available. Now I regret not getting them when I had the chance! Darn. Should have taken the plunge although I don’t usually like cream blushes 😉 But I have felt the texture and I think its closer to what Dior has to offer so do check those out when you can 😉
Darn, Dior’s cream blushes are only going to be released in July!
But I did hop over to the Nars counter and got a cream blush (Penny Lane) which is more sheer than Lunasol’s and isn’t shimmery! I tend to get a bit of clown cheeks going on, especially with my sensitive red skin. 🙁
I spotted the Dior blushes out already in Singapore Firn 🙂 They are quite nice. Don’t stain my fingers, go on very easily but I am having a bit of problem with longevity which no one else seems to complain about so I’m investigating that for a bit. I remember lots of people loving Penny Lane back when I was into Nars. It is very lovely but I just can’t get over the Nars packaging so its no more Nars for me till they change it 😛
Wow these are pretty on you! I don’t think I’ve ever tried an EL gloss, but now you have me intrigued! The texture sounds amazing to me!
Hey Tracy, these are so nice and jelly like! But only the Sheer Rush formula though. I’m not too crazy about the regular formula ones but that’s just me. Others love it 🙂
Oh dearie me, here we go again. Granted they aren’t Dior or I’ll be a pile of hot mess right about now but the combination of lip glosses and pretty colours … I need caffeine.
I’ve used Estee Lauder lipglosses before and I love its scent which is almost signature-ish to EL {weird, right?!}, BUT they were so STICKY! I’m curious now how not sticky these are but a visit to their counter would most likely spell disaster since I know the beauty consultants by name – ALL THREE OF THEM. Dangerous, dangerous grounds. Oh dearie me.
LOL I remember your weakness for Dior 😉 On the bright side, these are a tad cheaper but I just love how they look on lips. Oh the signature EL lip product scent isn’t in these (for which I am relieved because I’m not such a fan of them) but there is a fruity scent that isn’t as strong. I like the finish a lot but I’m not too crazy about the other 3 colours they have. Wish they’d just make it permanent and expand the colour selection then we’d be onto a winner! 😀
Hi Paris!
Hot Fuse, Hot Fuse, Hot Fuse 🙂 I would pick Hot Fuse! Such a lovely colour. You rock in X-Pose Rose 🙂 And… I like your makeup! You look really fresh!
Hi Rin! Hot Fuse is… HOT!! 😀 Thanks bunches, with the hot weather we’ve been having recently, light makeup is really the way to go 😉
I’ve said I’m not a gloss girl, and Dior is converting me into one. These look gorgeous too! Have to try them one day 🙂
Yep, I was a convert to Dior & Guerlain glosses as well. Most brands still don’t do it for me, but these were a nice surprise.
I think I will prefer the standard EL glosses because they are very pigmented. Not a fan of sheer glosses, because it is as though I didn’t put anything all since I have dark lips.
Haven’t seen these in SG though.
In general, I loves EL stuff! Everything is good.
I think EL has most certainly stepped up their game in recent years which is of course, great for us! I don’t usually do sheer lip colours too but lately, its all I’m gravitating towards, maybe because the weather is so hot or because I haven’t been really putting on much makeup 🙂
I was given one lipgloss from EL last year, and it smells great!! It wasn’t sticky and although it looks meh in the tube, a quick swipe on the lips really make a difference. That left a very good impression of the EL lipgloss for me (as compared to Juicy Tubes –> hair magnet… haha).
I would have gone for X-Pose Rose (it’s gonna be sheer anyway… hahaha)!! 😀
Hahaha “hair magnet!” 😀 OMG I hate the Juicy Tubes. HATE! They are so sticky my lips feel like they’re glued together. Its the reason I never got into lipgloss so I’m very very happy with the new incarnations that aren’t goopy, sticky and yes, hair magnets!
Wow you look so young! Love your hair 🙂
Haha thanks Natalie 😀
The two quivering bits of jelly part crack me up! hahaha!! You look nice in all colours! Its been long since I last bought a lipgloss, now its time again! 😀
Haha It was very wobbly jelly-like 😀 Did you manage to check them out?
Hi Paris! Your lips really looked like they are dripped in jelly, especially the bottom lip!
Lovely pretty colors, but since my face is the oily kind, I’m afraid glosses are off-limits for me..
Hehe thanks DN 🙂 I never thought about the co-relation between oily skin and glosses but you have me intrigued! Do you feel that a glossy lip will make your face look even more oily?
Definitely! Glossy lips coupled with matte face = fresh. But glossy lips and oily face (especially at midday) means that too much shine is going on, I risk looking like a reflective traffic cone!
LOL!!! That was very graphic! 😀 But I think you’re right haha!
ARGH! I am getting this TONIGHT! EVIL, Paris, EVIL!!!
Haha which one did you end up getting? 😛
That Lunasol foundation is dreamy on you! Your skin looks flawless.
Thank you Alison 🙂 Its my go-to foundation when I want my skin to look at its best without too much effort 🙂
Deliciously shiny and beautiful on you, more importantly, not sticky yet shiny 🙂 Looks like EL is clawing back with some wonder products and makes it more attractive as Limited Edition.
Something this lovely shouldn’t have been limited edition 😉 But yes, EL is slowly but surely getting back into the game 😀
