My Introduction to Aveda Hair Products and a “Datin” hair makeover

February 1, 2013 Paris B 53 Comments

Aveda hair products are not new to me, as I’d heard about them before this but never used them. I used to see a small inconspicuous salon in Bangsar Village 2 but I did not know that they had been relaunched on a bigger scale in Pavilion KL, with a bright shiny new large store (or as they will have it, “experience center”) and a hair salon to come.

Interestingly, just before I met with the people from Aveda, I was having lunch with my blog designer who hails from the USA, and she told me that she had been using their products for a long time! In fact, she told me that Aveda does nice makeup products too! Hmm… I don’t think we get them here though.

What Aveda is more known for is their hair products. At least that’s what I know them for 🙂

The brand bases itself on Ayurvedic principles and uses botanical extracts in their products and essential oils and where possible, are supposed to be natural, SLS-free and are manufactured in an environmentally friendly factory. My experience with natural hair products has been rather touch and go. They just don’t seem as effective as the chemically laden ones, but I was assured that the Aveda products are very effective.

Have you tried any products by Aveda and would like to share your experience with them?

In fact, during the introduction to the brand, I was told that when the Aveda hair salon opens in a few months time, they would be offering colouring services using their natural hair colours.

The Aveda Full Spectrum Deep will be a natural based hair colour used by professionals to create a bespoke hair colour using naturally derived dyes which are supposed to be kinder to your hair but just as effective. I have to admit that the hair swatches on display was quite impressive, with colours ranging from bleached blonde to vibrant red. Red hair! Hmm… 😉

The Invati hair care range that you see right at the top is a range for people with problems with thinning hair, as it promises to help prevent hair fall, and give you thicker fuller hair. The key ingredients include turmeric and ginseng – does sound very invigorating doesn’t it? Imagine all that on your hair.

You can view the full range of hair products available from Aveda on their website and I was told that we will be getting most of them in 🙂 I found one more thing interesting – the Chakra Balancing Body Mists.

aveda chakra balancing body mist

What these are, are body mists infused with essential oils ostensibly to balance your emotions and well-being depending on which chakra is off balance for the day. I was shown a few cards from where I chose a colour that appealed most to me. It turned out to correspond to Chakra 2 which is the center of vitality and sensation. It smelt of spicy sandalwood and citrus, which isn’t a combination of scents I usually go for, but on that day, it just smelt right.

Apparently it meant my Chakra 2 was off balance and the scent helped balance it so I was more alert. Hmm… Did it make me more alert? I don’t know, but it smelt nice and made me feel comfortable 😀 I do wish they came in a set of 7 little bottles so I could spritz on the scent depending on what I felt was off center for the day. It would be too pricey otherwise to buy a whole bottle of Chakra 2 only to find that after being balanced, I didn’t need it anymore. What a tragedy! 😛

Coming back to the hair, there are also Aveda styling products for different needs and I was told their new Be Curly Curl Enhancer range was good to help even straight hair hold a curl. Unfortunately it could not be demonstrated on me, thanks to my impossibly short hair, so all that I got was a “Datin” hair makeover 😀 For the benefit of international readers, my reference to “Datin” here would be to a titled socialite lady who generally has big well-coiffured hair because they have the time to spend at hair salons haha! Its about as close as I can translate it so feel free to elaborate if you like LOL! 😀 Apologies to any “Datins” who may be reading although I’m quite sure there aren’t any 😛

As you can see, my short hair was given texture and shape by stylist, Adrian using Aveda Control Paste which gives hair a piecey textured appearance that isn’t sticky. It was set with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray which  is light and does not leave hair feeling “crispy”. You know what I mean right? When your hair feels more crispy than fried chicken, you know you have a problem 😛 It washes out quite easily though with regular shampoo so I was happy. I dislike it when I have to wash more than once to get product out of my hair (which is also why I don’t put in any to start 😛 )

Adrian promised me I could have a more dramatic “wild” look the next time around with my short hair so lets hold him to that shall we? 😉 I might even have to dress the part. I’m off to shop for a leather jacket now 😉

I’d love to know whats good from Aveda if you’ve tried anything from the brand.

It is a new brand to me, and I know that its available worldwide so I’m sure many of you savvy ladies would be more experienced than I am. So hit me up – what’s something I just HAVE TO TRY or what should I stay away from? 😉

My hairdresser recommended the Be Curly range for me to use after I got my hair chemically (digital) permed. It works well because it’s weightless (especially the conditioner and curl enhancer) and helps to prolong the life of my perm.

I’m using Aveda Shampure Shampoo, Dry Remedy Moisturizing Conditioner, Light Elements Smoothing Fluid, and their wooden paddle brush. I love all of them especially the conditioner and paddle brush. Wanting to try out the Invati series, have you try out any products in this series before?

What I noticed about the Aveda in Pavillion is the price hike. They are now managed by Luxasia. It’s ridiculous how much they have increased the price. Tried the Invati on a whim, I noticed my hair loss is more noticable while using this range, so no will not repurchase. Less hair loss with Pure Abundance.

    Hi,

My hair was thinning very fast over the past two months and I became alarmed. So, I was looking for a natural, permanent hair colour brand together with my wife when we stumbled upon Aveda in Pavilion late April 2014. My wife immediately told me that this is the brand to buy since she knew about it and since I knew nothing about hair treatment because I had always had shiny, thick black hair since I was young – until I turned 40 not too long ago.

I bought the Invati Hair Thinning range (Exfoliating Shampoo, Thickening Conditioner, Spray and the styling clay) hoping to restore my thinning even though I wasn’t sure whether it was hair falling off the roots or breakage. I paid RM576 for the 4 items.

To date, I have used the products 11 times (except the clay) – completing the process with application of the spray (twice a day) as prescribed.

After using the shampoo/conditioner the first time, I noticed that all the 102 hair I collected from the basin were short in length suggesting it was breakage rather than hair falling off from the roots. This proved my suspicion that it was probably those off-the-shelf colouring products I had been using for the past two years which caused massive build-up and brittleness. This realisation was a great relief as I now know that I am not going to be bald.

As I continued with the treatment, I noticed more hair falling off (brittle, broken hair). Here is a record of the number of hair I collected after each wash:

    27 April – 102
    05 May – 105
    08 May – 100
    12 May – 150
    16 May – 152
    19 May – 135
    22 May – 115
    26 May – 155
    29 May – 125
    31 May – 056

The above record shows that my hair is falling off faster after starting on Aveda. I think the last entry of only 056 strands (31 May) was probably because the date was very close to that of the last wash (29 May), so should not be taken as improvement yet.

Notwithstanding, I think the increase in hair fall is expected as part of the process of exfoliation.

I am continuing the treatment to see when the new hair is going to spring up – assuming that the scalp had also been affected by previously unnatural hair colours and that the spray will regain its “fertility”. I believe before this can happen, I should feel some itchiness on my scalp first. But I have yet to feel that yet.

I actually stumble upon your post as I was searching for Aveda Hair Colour. Seems like this range is not avaliable in Singapore except in in hair salons. I may have to come up to Pavilion again to get it.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with Aveda.
