I’ve been really busy at work this week (slaying dragons, I said, which explains the missing post yesterday. Dragon refused to remain slain long enough for me to write a post 😛 ) So one of the things I made sure I put on my face in the morning is a longwearing foundation because I knew I would be having a long day and I needed to put my best face forward. The past 2 days, I’ve been using the Diorskin Forever foundation which I was a bit on the fence about before, but which I’ve since worked around and love it for days when I need my makeup to set well and last all day without looking shiny. It involves a serum but I’ll share that tip soon – can’t spill all my secrets at one go right? 😉
But today its not about that. Its about the fact that Burberry Beauty has come out with a longwearing matte foundation too – the Velvet Foundation. Its been released together with the Autumn/Winter 2012 makeup collection that includes 3 new eyeshadow colours, and 2 lipsticks.
Based on my understanding, everything will remain part of the permanent collection so you have the time to think about it and whether you want it. That’s good too because we only have 1 Burberry Beauty counter in Malaysia and not everyone has access to it 🙂
I’ll just run through what’s available and tell you a little bit about the Velvet Foundation, and you can then tell me if you have tried Burberry makeup and what you like from it 🙂
There are 3 new Burberry Sheer Eyeshadows available – Porcelain White (shimmer white), Mulberry (shimmer maroon) and Dark Sable (matte brown).
I tried the eyeshadow once before in a makeover but wasn’t impressed enough to drop the RM105 asking price per product. Since then, I have come across many blogs and raves for their shadows which has made me re-think my choice. So when I was at the counter recently, I picked up Pale Barley, a cream-beige shade that looks like I would be able to get a lot of use out of it.
2 new Lip Cover colours are Sepia Pink (rosy pink) and Mocha Glow (brown). I didn’t have a good experience with Burberry lipsticks before this so I have to confess that I’m a bit hesitant to purchase one, no matter the excellent reviews. It might change when I check out the Lip Velvet lipsticks which are set to be available soon, but till then, I’d pass. Sepia Pink on my lips is pretty much my lips but better. It is wearable for most. But I was interested in Mocha Glow because who can resist trying on a brown lipstick right? 😀
It wasn’t very interesting. It made me look gothic and really aged me so that’s it then, no brown lipsticks for me. I was told however, that it is a very lovely colour on someone with darker skintones. So if you have darker skintones, do give it a try. You never know if it might work for you 🙂
So, coming back to longwearing foundation, I’m interested to know how Velvet Foundation will fare. I tried the Sheer Foundation before this and it wasn’t for me. Looked oily on me, and faded quickly. So, it will be interesting to try Velvet Foundation and see how it measures up. Gotta admit that the packaging with the matte cover is seriously sexy! 🙂 You’ll know when I know how I feel about it 😉
Does anything in Burberry’s Autumn/Winter collection catch your eye? Have you tried anything from Burberry Beauty that you like?
I quite like Burberry’s Light Glow blushes. I came down hard on them before because I do feel that they are pricey, but I also realised that the texture is very good and very similar to that found in Japanese makeup, which I happen to like. A sheer pretty glow on skin. I also recently picked up Pale Barley eyeshadow and really hope to like it, because its pricey yo!

Keen to hear your review on the foundation. I have a few items from Burberry that are pretty good – the blush, the sheer glow base and the bronzer – can’t live without it.
Thanks to your sample of the glow base, I’m tempted to pick up the full size. Eeps!
Wait. Is that last photo you? 😉 You look stunning!
Good luck, dragon slayer! 😛
Haha thanks Sze Ling, yes its me – one of those super photoshopped photos you get from promotional counters 😉
SO excited to hear your thoughts on the foundation! I had been waiting FOREVER for Burberry to release a foundation geared towards oily skin. But when it came out, it was around the time Giorgio Armani’s Maestro foundation came out as well and ultimately, I am going the Maestro route (STILL haven’t been to the mall to get it, but I plan to this week!). I am still curious about the Burberry though and if you love it, there is a good chance I will be running to grab it! 😛
Ooh you are getting GA Maestro foundation! I tested it at the counter in HK but didn’t like how it felt (and the price) so I’m passing on it. Its probably a good thing we don’t have GA locally hehe… I’ll be sure to try to share my thoughts on this Burberry Velvet Foundation soon 😀
I LOVE the new foundation, it really is velvet (sets almost matte on me, dry skin), the e/s are also pretty, I like Mulberry and Dark Sable the best out of those new colours. Is that last picture you? 😀
Eeps! So excited to try the Velvet Foundation now that you say you love it Claire! 😀 Mulberry is a colour I just know I’ll find hard to pull off but I’ll be sure to try anyway. I liked how the MUA used Dark Sable for my brows because it is matte! And yes, that last picture was me but a super photoshopped photo print out LOL!
Same as you PB! I could never make brown lipstick work for me!!!! I look old, too mature for my real age…and just trying hard to be “goth like” LOL! Thanks for sharing the collection. I wonder if Burberry Cosmetics will ever arrive here?
The last thing we want to look is old, Nikki! No brown lipsticks for us! 😉 I hope you get Burberry makeup soon. I find it a bit hit or miss but its always nice to be able to check it out for yourself 😉
I swear by their sheer glow blushes! I remember that initial feel, that I wanted to buy all 6. And I still do want to buy all 6! The only reason I stop myself is that they are dupable, and I really don’t need all because 2 of them probably don’t suit warm skin tone. But I want all 6!
The only con to their blush is that it’s truly matte, which is not exactly right up my alley. Since I belong to the party of people who will top it up with a good amount of highlight anyway, because I have dry skin, and that kind of highlight glow makes me look healthier (not so dry skin).
But I know lots of people are after true matte blushes which are so incredibly rare. And Burberry has 6 good ones! Love love.
You’re going to love the eyeshadow. I love mine. I only have one in Antique Rose (maroon colour). It goes on so well as a deep outer-V colour. I am indeed tempted to get more. But so far haven’t.
I’ve decided that I don’t like the lipsticks too. But will definitely try when the new formula comes out.
I only tested the new foundation, so can’t give a verdict. But I think I liked what I tested. Just that, I don’t buy foundation by default.
Oh yes, I like the blushes too. I like them on days when I have to put something a bit more professional forward, because sometimes, shimmer can be a bit overwhelming 😀 I have 2 colours I believe LOL and I don’t plan to get more, because as you say, they are easily dupeable and they are pricey 😛 Its good to know the shadows are good. I’m raring to go with Pale Barley and Mulberry. I think my tastes have changed again so now I go for something a bit more understated even if its a bit sheer so these might be right up my alley! 😀
I don’t know if they worth the splurge; I prefer to buy from a brand that all its life has sold cosmetics instead of one which did that to expand the brand.
P.S. You look gorgeous in the picture 😉
Thank you Efrain – a bit too photoshopped for my tastes though LOL! 🙂 I felt the same way you did too but I have to admit that the quality of some of their products (not all) is quite good, especially their blush which is great for ladies who want something more wearable without shimmer. It adds a lovely glow to the skin without splotching on the colour, and their glow base is pretty good too. A friend gave me a sample once and I’m hooked but haven’t gotten round to buy the full size 😉 Not everything is worth buying, but some are 😉
Thank you Efrain, you’re very sweet 🙂 I know what you mean. I scoffed at them when they first launched too but since then they have been getting quite a lot of raves from many people I trust so I’ll give them another go 😉
Big Burberry Beauty fan here 😉 I like the new velvet foundation lots. For this foundation I use my fingers t apply because I find that it gives me the best finish. It is a matte finish that doesn’t look flat on me. I’ve been getting oilier so this lasts about 4 to 5 hours on me. It doesn’t fade.
I hope you will love Pale Barley too, it is a big favourite of mine too. I actually own quite a few eye shadows. 😉 The one I reach for all the time is Porcelain.
Of all the Burberry products, the only thing that isn’t the best is the eye liner pencil. It is kinda hard and smudges on me.
Hiya Jacqueline, I do remember you are a huge fan of Burberry Beauty 😀 Thanks for the tip about using fingers, I’ll be sure to bear it in mind. The looking flat thing is what steers me away from matte foundations most of the time.
nice photo Paris. but the lipsticks don’t look so great.
I didn’t think them very impressive myself too!
I like their blushes and their lip mists (I have it in Cinnamon, which gives a nice sheer brown without looking too nineties, and it gives a really moist glossy finish).
I have the Earthy blush which looks like a subtle warm rose on me. I pair this with my Lunasol cream blush in pink and I get a barely there flush. I don’t like blush to be loud because I suffer from redness so I like just a hint to perk me up. I apply the blush using my RMK pressed powder N brush which gives a sheerer finish than the brush that comes together.
I am loving the GA Maestro foundation even on my combination (retinoid-using) skin. It really disappears into the skin (I am getting more comfortable with sheer coverage) but I’m not sure if it is breaking me out around the chin. Lunasol’s skin modeling liquid foundation has more coverage but it feels so heavy by comparison! I tend to look flat with matte foundations so I think I will pass on this one.
Earthy sounds like a pretty colour on you 🙂 The makeup artist put it on me but it looked a bit muddy. I prefer the brighter colours that show up better on my skin 🙂 Its good to know the GA Maestro foundation works for you. I tested it but wasn’t terribly impressed with what I saw (plus the price is staggering!) Still, who knows, if I get to actually test it again, how I’d like it then 🙂
I use Earthy more as a contour shade. With a very light hand it looks almost corally on me.
GA Maestro needs good prep in order to perform well. The first time I tested it, my skin was dry and flakey (after work) and it looked crap!
I love all things Burberry. That makeup looks gorgeous.
Ooh what are your faves, Marla?
You know how sometimes you come across a brand and it feels like their products just click with you perfectly? That’s Burberry for me! The quality of their eyeshadows and blushes are phenomenal – So smooth, easy to blend, last a full work day (with primer) and while pigmented, are really hard to overdo. If you love understated elegance, you must check Burberry out 🙂
I’ve accumulated 12 (eep!) of their eyeshadows and I love every single one of them. Trench is the one I use virtually everyday because it matches my skin tone perfectly (NC20) but my favourite pair for work is Pale Barley + Midnight Brown and for the evening Rosewood + Mulberry.
Somehow I’ve managed to be a lot more restrained with my blushes – Peony, Tangerine and Earthy but I’m seriously tempted to get Blossom at some stage. ;p
I was a little disappointed with the other 2 shades (Porcelain White and Dark Sable) from the A/W 12 collection. They’re stunning in their own right but Burberry’s already done very similar colours 🙁 Taupe Brown is pretty much identical to Dark Sable. Porcelain White is less similar to Pearl White however I personally prefer Pearl White as it is more muted and easier to use.
I’m really hoping they’ll bring out some greens soon 🙂
“Understated elegance”…i so agree with this.
To me, this is what Burberry cosmetics is and i really appreciate it’s people for coming up with these products that give idiot proof color mix and match, reliable quality and ease of application.
I have collected about 7 of the single eye colors. And my fav combination is pearl blue with taupe brown. The powdery baby blue with a tinge of grey is beautiful and makes it a bit more interesting when blended with my usual neutral eye looks. Looks meh when swatched but it’s really lovely and lasting on the eye. It’s nice with Khaki and Greys too.
The eye colors never crease on me, gives great pigmentation, are buttery smooth and a joy to apply and blend, last all day even under humid conditions. I have normal, not oily nor dry eyelids.
My other two fav items from the brand are the “sheer summer glow” powder (love love love…hmmm) and fresh glow (my absolute can’t go wrong formulation).
I will be giving the falls collection a miss though. The colors are not a must get since i have quite a good collection on hand. Nothing too unique here.
I’m aiming the Chanel Poudre Lumiere Nacree for this holiday. It’s love at first sight when swatched but i just have to walk away and make sure it’s not an impulse buy. I’m thinking about it a lot. I haven’t felt this way for a long time for a highlighter. 😉 haha. What do you think of Notorious the taupe sculpting blush? I’m fascinated by it. And wanted to get it. But the SA told me no it’s ‘only’ for dark skin girls. I was quite turned off by her remarks in fact. I am also thinking about this a lot . Eventually i will get it i guess and will try to make it work somehow! 🙂
Oh no now you’ve got me intrigued by Pearl Blue! I usually avoid blues because they seem really unnatural on me but I checked out a couple of swatches online and it would look so beautiful with Taupe Brown or Pearl Grey. Do you have Pearl Grey and if so how do you like it?
Messy Wands has done a post on Chanel Notorious just recently. She’s fair skinned and it is an amazing contour on her 🙂
I’m not a blue person either. Blue usually do not go well with my colour. But this one works. The SA tried it out on me and i was pleasantly surprised by the effect. I like to pair it usually with Taupe Brown or Khaki (green tone neutral). I have Pearl Grey but don’t find it goes that well. Not much contrast here. This is an ok colour for me. I do use it from time to time. But not a must have. Another colour that don’t go really well for me is metallic greys/ pewter colours. The best grey palette for my colour that I’ve come across is currently Nars’ Paris Duo. If i am to pair Pearl Blue with grey, it will be the grey from Nars’ Paris.
Do you think i ‘might need’ midnight brown too? 😉 i’ve been avoiding the burberry counter for the past couple of months coz’ I’m afraid to cave in to temptation with the new foundations and upcoming lip velvets? I love matt lips thats not drying.
Btw, have you tried their eye liners? How do they fare?
Yes, Notorious looks good on Messy Wands. aaah….those sculpted cheekbones! And can i say i really love her new hairdo! 😉 I think it’s going to be very pretty on the lids too. This is said from a neutrals-lover point of view. haha.
Gah! You and Gwen are going to be the death of my wallet, once I decide if I like Pale Barley or not >.< For Fresh Glow, did you mean the base? I was quite impressed with it based on the sample my friend gave me once. As for Chanel Notorious, it looks amazing on Xiao I think, as a sculpting powder and shadow but I just know that if I tried to use it, I'd look like a zombie so I'd admire it on someone else, just not myself 😛
Yes, the base. It’s such a light formulation it has not turned greasy on my combination skin even when the weather is humid. It has the nicest pearl sheen that i’ve yet to find a close dupe from other brand. I also like to use it alone under the eye area to brighten up some dark eye circles and liven up tiredness. Great on the cupid bow and nose bridge too.
ha…i think to use Notorious on the cheeks will need lots of practice. I most likely, eventually, will use it just on the eyes. But if so, it will be too pricey for a single eye shadow. Decisions decisions.
Gwen, you have singlehandedly made me and Lisa want more of their shadows LOL! I’m not too familiar with their shadow colours but you’re right, they are lacking a green. Or maybe a nice khaki too 🙂
I haven’t tried anything Burberry before, but read so much about it. Would be great to know what you think of the foundation 🙂
Will give it a go and see 🙂 You can check it out in Singapore or in KL the next time you’re down 😉
I have the glow base and the foundation that i use everyday. 3 shadows, pale barley, mulberry and dark sable, love the texture and my current obsession, their lipsticks, i have sepia (its almost finshed!), burnt sugar and brick red. I will repurchase sepia and buy more of their lippies. Waiting for the velvet lippies to come out. Thank gOodness Burrbery make up are just available in KLCC, if they are available at all the major malls i think more damage would have been done.
Haha! I know exactly how you feel, Iza. Sometimes, when a brand works for us we just want to pick up everything right? 😛 A friend of mine has Brick Red lipstick and it looks lovely on her. I’m told the Velvet Lipsticks should be out now, so you can go take a look soon 🙂
Tried the eyeshadows especially Mulberry many times at the counter but failed to impress me. I love both the makeup base and sheer foundation together but then again, the foundation cant seem to work its best on its own. So far the only thing i never regretted getting from Burberry is its concealer. Try it, PB!
I found the sheer foundation melted away on my skin and that rarely happens! So its going to be interesting how the Velvet Foundation fares 🙂 So, their concealer works eh? *makes notes* 😉
Love your photo!
I find Burberry a bit blah in the makeup stakes. It might be one of those ‘desperate to use last amount of foreign currency before flying home’ purchases if I was going to buy.
Thanks Sam 🙂 LOL at your description. I find it a bit bland too, but it feels to be of better quality than say Bobbi Brown which is in the same sort of bland neutral category, to me. It looks prettier at any rate 😛
I have been wanting Burberry products for a while, but when I tested some of their raved about products, I was like eh. Which makes me wonder if part of the reason for the raves is because it is a) a good, but not great product line, but not earth shattering, b) it is brand new line to rave over, and c) it is Burberry.
Haha it could be d) all of the above! 😉 I have thus far felt that their blushes are lovely but you have to like that sort of texture which I find is prevalent in many Japanese makeup. The barely there flush that glows from within. I haven’t tried many other things from Burberry but am not planning to try their lipsticks too soon thanks to my previous experience 🙂
I’ve never tried anything by Burberry – not even their macs! But the packaging is lovely enough to stir my wallet into action.
Oh, have you seen that Beauté Cosmetics is now in Malaysia? Why all the brands I want never come to Brazil? T_T
Haha I saw that email, Mari! I didn’t even know where its sold – it looks like a small little boutique quite far away from the heart of the city. Have you tried anything from Beaute?
You know, this has nothing to do with the review here, but your photo on here makes me nostalgic. It brings me back to the times of such movies like Boys Are Easy with actress Maggie Cheung. You look like a movie star back in the days. I hope you take this as a compliment.
Hi there, I did take it as a compliment, thank you! I love how elegant Maggie Cheung and the actresses of that era were 🙂
I love the last pic! I stared at it for about 10 mins. thinking if it was really you or a model.. Haha! Gorgeous! 😀
Aww that’s sweet of you, Jen. Thanks!
