Your say: Pretty Makeup Palettes: Do you use them or just collect and admire them?

do you use your pretty makeup palettes
  • Save

Last week, I showed you what happens when you use that simply adorable RMK Fairy palette from their 15th Anniversary collection. Essentially, you lose all the detail in her pretty little head (although RMK has a very innovative way of getting around it! 😉 ) I spotted an interesting comment from MisSmall that I thought would make interesting discussion amongst us makeup mavens 😀

Fairy!!!! Oh I can never bring myself to use it! Or I’ll most likely do what I do with most of my purchases (eg. colour pencils), one to keep and one to use. Am I the weirdo here or do most girls do that with their pretty things?

She wasn’t alone, because there were quite a few comments along the same vein of not being able to use something that looks as pretty as that.

What say you, Ladies? I’m sure we are all loathe to dig into a pretty makeup palette and lose the design over time which sometimes, turns it very blah. Would love to hear your thoughts and naturally, here’s mine! 😉

I’m sentimental about a lot of things, but pretty makeup palettes aren’t one of them. So as you might guess, I’m a “user” not a “collector” of pretty makeup palettes 🙂

I will look at them in all their pristine glory and go “Aww…” and I will die a little inside when I take my brush to the product, but ultimately, my personal belief is that makeup is only beautiful once you use it because its purpose is to make US look beautiful, not just to sit around looking pretty hehe…

So that’s me. I use my makeup palettes, pretty design or not. I don’t buy to collect although I may buy because its pretty. But I will ultimately use them.

How about all of you? Are you swayed to purchase the pretty makeup palettes that all the various brands have been coming out with? Do you use them or do you keep them in their pristine glory as a collector’s item? Or maybe you adopt the buy one to use, one to collect theory? Incidentally, I met a couple of people who do this, so I am really curious about what you do/think 🙂

I love pretty palettes but I usually don’t buy them because I know I won’t have the heart to use them. It’s hard to resist the temptation sometimes, but I don’t like to get something just to look at it. If I won’t use it, I won’t buy it.

Wise move, Gio 🙂 some like the Cruel Gardenia palette is such a work of art, but it’s great because it’s a raised pattern that doesn’t fade that quickly. If there’s overspray is when I’m most wary because most times, the bottom colours look nothing like the pan!

I dig into my pretty palettes eagerly, I don’t feel a twinge of anything neither do I buy back ups. For me makeup is meant to be used.

so there are connoisseurs of makeup palettes too 🙂 probably the limited and the most wanted editions would go for auctions after some years 😀

I have actually seen limited edition palettes fetch good prices in eBay if they are in pristine condition. This was a few years back. These days, I think it might even fetch more, who knows!

Use it. Much as I can’t bear to touch those limited edition designs, I definitely buy to use it. But I guess the thing is that I use so little of them that the design still stays there.

Palettes with etchings are easier to preserve. In a way, that’s quite nice, or if we can just use a corner of the colour. But if it’s just overspray (and I actually hate that!) then it’s all gone with one swipe! Still, so long as we look good wearing the colours right? 😉

I don’t mind. I just used them. Of course, at first I’ll be all like “awww, pretty” and take pictures of it. But still, I have to use it because it was bought to use, not for collection. It never occurs in my mind to collect pretty make-up palettes. It that a new hobby? LOL.. >.<

Well, people collect all sorts of stuff and some day, it might just sell for good money, who knows! The rest of us will just have to watch enviously when that happens, because we got anxious and used our palettes hehe… I know someone who buys 2 of every LE palette she likes. Dedication!

If I buy something I use it! If something is too cute, then I think I’m also implying that it isn’t practical. Like the Paul & Joe cat blush sticks? I wouldn’t buy it because I just don’t think it’d be too practical! I’m not a collector. I have to put whatever I buy into use to feel like I’m not wasting my money!

Awww, my comment became a post! That makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, as silly as that sounded. Well, I’m a hoarder, with almost everything and anything. It’s a habit that I’ve been trying to get rid of for years, but failed miserably. Oh well. I guess that’s just me. Hence the policy, one to keep, and one to use. Gosh I hope I don’t pass down this trait to my children!

Thank YOU for the idea, MisSmall! 😀 I’m a hoarder too. I hoard all the boxes I’m supposed to toss, and all sorts of crap and once or twice a year, do a big spring clean and toss it all out, promising not to do it again…. And failing naturally. You know what you’ll need? A big house. With lots of storage space so you can hoard away 😉

Coincidentally, my husband is a “collector” too. So between the two of us, we fill up any space pretty quickly. Like he’s always said, no house is ever gonna be big enough (unless we can afford one of those gigantic mansion in the movies with its own helipad and golf course) for hoarders like me and “collectors” like him. 😐

I’ve never bought a palette with such a beautiful design! I think I’ll use them anyway, they’re usually really expensive. If Essence, or some other low cosa brand, made a palette with a design like this I could think about collecting them. But I don’t think they will, so I guess that my comment doesn’t really make and sense 😛

Yes the problem with pretty palettes is that they are pricey 🙁 I’ve tried a couple of products from Essence and quite like some of it. Do you have recommendations? 😀

I love to use my pretty make-up, but I am careful with it and I keep it clean, also the packaging. I do throw out the boxes and inlay but I use all the goodies. What I don’t like is hit the pan, or when my powder or eyeshadow brakes….. especially when it’s a limited edition. But onward and forward I say…

    Hi Paris!
I am always in a love hate relationship with my pretty palette. They’re just too pretty to be used but then I think again, why would I buy something that I would only put in my drawer? In the end I always use it. Although it doesn’t look as pretty as before used, I still feel happy using it 🙂 And oh, I have taken pictures of the palette first so that I will never forget how pretty it was. 🙂

This post made me realize that I don’t have any palette to defile in the first place because my make-up stuffs are liquid and loose powder (I’m a mineral make-up user). I understand that some would like to keep the pretty ones as a collection, it can be considered as art appreciation :p

I’m surprised too! My make-up is very minimal actually, sort of a ‘no makeup’ makeup look so I don’t use eye shadows at all, hence no palette. My blush powder is loose, and I have no idea how to apply Guerlain’s Meteorites 00 Blush pearls because it’s sheer so it’s been sitting prettily in my cabinet.

I might also use it even if it’s really pretty but I shall take a picture of it first so that I will have a memento.. Haha!
I’m a practical buyer and I don’t like to waste my money into something that I will not use, so if I buy something I try to make most out of it..
