Sway to the Calypso beat in Acapulco: Or Colour Blocking on Nails to buck a bland corporate environment

July 1, 2012 Paris B 19 Comments

“Orange” you glad its Sunday today? How was your week and weekend?

I’ve had a really rough week at work, and haven’t had much of a weekend either. Suddenly, its getting sort of hard to balance things on this tightrope. Yeah boo, feels sorry for myself and all that 😛 But I am trying to get over this slump and find something to look forward to and one thing that did make me sort of pleased over this week, was surprisingly, my nails.

dior calypso vernis

The primary colour I used was Calypso from the Dior Summer Mix collection and it is lovely and bright and cheery. Calypso is a lovely coral shade that pulls more red than orange, and unlike Acapulco, I found this one a breeze to apply. I’d actually sort of given up on these polishes after Acapulco but I’m glad I didn’t. It was easy to get a lovely smooth finish with thin layers of colour (very important for me as I’m TERRIBLE with controlling colour). But what I enjoyed most was rocking the bland corporate world with colour blocking accent nails! 😉

No, I don’t recommend that you do this in a conservative office. It might raise too many eyebrows 😉 It is also nothing new in the nail world, but its new for me, standing outside looking in 🙂

I was actually testing out the texture of Acapulco next to Calypso and I must say I was right about my initial thoughts on Acapulco. Its got a horrid thick but sheer texture that needs at least 3 layers to be opaque but by then the polish is so thick it looks awful on me.

By contrast, Calypso applies opaque in 2 thin layers of colour and very very interestingly, has a delicious jelly texture once the colour sets. I’m not sure I know how to describe it, but it looks like you dipped your nails into jelly and let it set. Its translucent yet opaque and made me crave some nice cold fruit jelly (which I might just make later today to ease this craving 😀 ) Its delicious (and that’s a strange description for a nail polish!)!

I’m not sure if you can see it, but I tried to get a close up to show you what I mean about the jelly finish of Calypso.

Do you see the jelly-like finish? The 4th finger shows it best. Acapulco (yellow) looks quite thick and solid next to Calypso.

So that was me this week. Harried, harrassed, stressed and having my nails raise more than a couple of brows which I naturally, pretended not to notice 😉 I’m not sure how I get away with it, but I do… thankfully! 😛

I hope your week was better. What did you wear on your nails over the week? Next week, since the stress levels will not be letting up, I forsee me sporting skittle nails! Why not eh? Let’s see how far I can push this 😉

Pretty and awesome colour blocking! Reminds me of tropical fruit punch on a hot summer day:) I’m not a fan of coral, perhaps it’s due to the orange undertone but Calypso is a pretty shade. I’ve banned myself from manicure and pedicure because my nails are turning brittle and gross. Anyways, I’ve had a lousy week. On Thursday night, I worked late and was walking to my car when I slipped and fell on the slippery sidewalk. At that vulnerable moment, a guy attempted to snatch my handbag. I huddled and he kicked my abdomen in frustration before walking away. I am feeling rock bottom now. So stay safe ok, it can happen to any one of us.

OMG Jennifer! Are you ok? Not seriously hurt or anything? That is such a sucky experience and I’m so sorry that you had to go through with it 🙁 🙁 Is there any way that you can bring your car closer to your office if you have to work late? In my previous office, I’d park quite a distance away at an open car park, but by the end of the day when most of the cars in the public lots just downstairs of my office had left, I’d bring my car and park it as close as possible so I didn’t have to walk so far. Or worse come to the worst, a job in a different (safer) office might be in order 🙁 Stay safe and I hope the coming weeks are better for you.

Hey Paris, thanks. Sorry, felt like I left a wrong comment in the wrong place but somehow felt like telling it. It was quite lousy and didn’t help with friends telling me it happened because I was feeling low, hence I attracted all the bad things. Anyhow, I got a medical checkup, all in order, nothing broken or ruptured, perhaps just a bruised body and broken soul. I am sure I will come around in a matter of time. Just be extra vigilant too ok. Take care.

There’s never a wrong comment in a wrong place my dear. Sometimes we just need a space, and well if this is it, why not? I do hope you’re feeling better. I totally understand what you mean about negativity attracting like. I believe in it which is why when I start slipping down, I learn to recognise it and try to stop. Take a break, watch a feelgood movie or tv, eat something nice, catch up with friends for laughs or just sit and reflect. Then, where possible, keep staying positive and soon, things will start going your way again. Its hard but I find it helps me because I’ve been feeling a bit meh recently too and some stuff I didn’t like to see are popping up. Yoga class helped me put things in perspective and in their place 🙂

I like! I don’t know if I’d be able to get away with it in my workplace, but I was planning on attempting leopard print on one nail to assess the situation…
I had a good week, because I was on holidays! I enjoyed sleeping in and being lazy. All ends tomorrow though…

Oh wow! If your office can handle a leopard print nail, they will be able to handle colour blocking! 😀 I think I’m overdue for a holiday. I can’t wait to get away and do nothing all day!

I once sported neon green nails on my toes (we wore in-office sandals there) when I was in my internship a HR firm for the Oil and Gas industry. Heh heh heh. The only comments I got were: Hanny ah, why you change your nail color every week ah?

But I digress, it is a very nice combination! I’d like to do a statement “nail” mani soon heh heh!

It was more fun than I thought! So do it and have fun coming up with the different ideas or combinations for your accent nail 😀

Haha. I used to wear eye-makeup that would make any strict-conservative-boss cringe. 😛 I’m not talking about crazy lashes, or OTT glitters. Just none brown, black or nude eye makeup. Luckily I worked in an engineering firm where everyone is pretty laid back, and okay with just about anything under the sun. 🙂

Its awesome to work in a relaxed environment 😀 I do too! Well, more or less 😉 I can get away with almost anything in terms of looks or dressing unless I have a meeting to attend where I have to look a little more “normal” but otherwise, everything goes 😀

Calypso is sucha pretty colour but then again I love anything coral! I don’t work in a conservative office but people don’t tend to get particualrly dressed up for work – think jeans and sweat tops! My bright nails and funky shoes certainly tend to stand out but thats just the way I like it!

I love coral colours too! 😀 They make great lipsticks, blush and nail colors. You’re lucky to work in an office with a relaxed dress code. I have a bit of flexibility but I do try to at least look a bit more pulled together just in case I have a meeting sprung on me at the last minute. However, if that happens and I have dramatic makeup on (its been known to happen!) then I guess its just my luck! LOL

Ooo I think this color works better on you than it does on me! I like it, but I do think it flatters slightly cooler skin tone better 🙂 I’ve been wearing Guerlain Riviera and I’m really digging it! I hope things will calm down for you soon Paris. Good luck!

Aww I looked up Guerlain Riviera and its such a gorgeous colour! I don’t think we get the nail colours here – few brands bring in nail colours (Dior and Chanel are 2 exceptions) because they can’t compete with the popularity of OPI! Weird right? That’s what I was told anyway. I’m hoping tings calm down at my end too – too much stress and I’ll explode 😛
