Insta-Updates: Objects in a mirror are closer than they appear (and a video!)

May 24, 2012 Paris B 12 Comments

I just wanted to share one of my favourite pictures from last week.

I shot this while driving down the highway one evening with the setting sun at my back. Ok, I wasn’t driving. Its not safe to drive and photograph at the same time 🙂 Which is really how I managed to take this photo of the wing mirror.

I’m just feeling a little pensive recently, and a little burnt out. This photo is just to remind me to pause and take a moment to appreciate what I have, be it a glorious sunset visible only through a rear view mirror, or time spent with loved ones.

Its also worth noting that objects in a mirror are closer than they appear. So looking in a mirror isn’t always a good thing because what it means is that you lose perspective. Some days, you just have to pull back and see what’s around you, live for the moment and enjoy yourself.

On that note also, I don’t normally post odd things like this, but I’ve been following this season of American Idol (yes yes, cringe! 😛 ) Whilst incredibly impressed by the talent displayed this year, it is this haunting rendition of Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight” by Phillip Phillips from the Final 3 show that has stayed with me. I love it and I had no doubt he would win (oops! You didn’t know? Well now you do 😛 )

Enjoy!

I love sunsets and sunrise too. It’s the perfect time for us to contemplate on the day ahead or reflect at the end of the day. Simply magical!

Awww, it’s so pretty. This photo is one of those that deserves an award! You could submit it if there’s a sunset theme competition, or time theme…

Love this photo 🙂 As strange as it sounds, sunset in the city can be captivating and therapeutic sometimes, maybe it’s because it signifies that yet another day has ended and tomorrow brings better things along. Personally, I’ve seen very pretty sunsets in the city when in office or driving home compared to the sunset I’ve seen in some island in Thailand. I’m feeling quite tired and lost in direction as well actually…secretly wish to go off for a holiday to chill by the beach or enjoy the finer things in life.

Hope things will get better at your side 🙂 Hang in there!

Thanks Jennifer! I hope things start looking up at your end too! I am planning to take a break soon and just rot for a few days. Sometimes, that’s all we need, not rushing around, visiting new places. I hope you get a break soon! I sometimes think we get better sunsets in the city maybe due to the pollution and the cloud overhang that results in all that bounced sunrays. By the beach, you’d be lucky to get something as glorious as this. Once, in Tioman I had to wait 3 days to get a good sunset. On the first 2 days, the sun just dropped out of the sky with no performance and it was only on the last day that we had the whole sky of orange and red and yellow hues. Mother Nature is pretty fickle too eh? 😉

Yeah, I’ve heard about the city pollution factor contributing to the pretty “duck egg yolk” sunset which I’ve chased countless times in Thailand but failed 🙂 The last time in Koh Samui, despite the wonderful brochure pictures of sunsets, alas the sun hid behind the clouds and poof it goes! I haven’t taken a holiday at all this year and after a series of events, I am not sure if I’ll be traveling at all other than for work. Hope things will lighten up soon enough 🙂
